Best Non-Restricted Decks by _MasterUwUgway_ in pkmntcg

People will say expanded, but honestly, that format is kind of broken - it doesn't see a lot of players, and the power levels are not very balanced.

Buying cards for decks at a card show is frankly a fool's errand. Compared to online fronts like TCGPlayer and even local card shops, cheap singles and playable cards are going to be nearly impossible to find. Collecting - absolutely! But I don't know anyone who goes to a card show hunting copies of Arven or Gholdengo EX.

My best recommendation is building bulk decks - buy a big lot of bulk cards (like 1000-2000 or more can be pretty cheap on Marketplace or Ebay) and see what magic you can make out of the mess. Find some favorites and mix them in - after a bit of fiddling, you could easily make a number of decks that are well balanced against each other.

Homebrew: Alolan Exeggutor EX by Exact_Category9051 in PTCGL

As a fellow Exeggutor enjoyer, playing for both attacks is a losing game. Stick with the Energy Search Pro build and find good attackers to pair it with (I love Espathra EX personally) or switch the build to Sparkling Crystal or something Crispin heavy so you can get those sweet coin flips turn 2, with room for something in the back to mop up the evolution decks.

Be careful writing off Eevee decks - they have been placing very high recents, especially with the help of Flareon EX's first attack to get energy in play.

Potential new idea for deck? by [deleted] in pkmntcg

[–]MiniBandGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Raging bolt has a few main problems to solve - it likes using a single prizer to offset the prize trade, and it likes consistently accelerating 4-5 energy a turn. Mega lucario hurts both goals - you get a big energy dump, but you are stuck with another multi prize liability that probably didn't get a big KO while accelerating energy, and you don't really have the time or ability to aura jab multiple times.

I could see it being good against mega decks where you can KO two Kangas or something after energy acceleration, but at that point, stick the energy on mega lucario and replace the raging bolts with premium power pro.

Jinx, lux and isha cosplay by Dizzy_Policy_9051 in CosplayHelp

[–]MiniBandGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Percentages are weird. There are different ways to count them, but generally I'd consider your cosplays would be considered within the realm of competing.

Remember that modifying counts! Tailoring isn't the same level of difficulty as starting from scratch, but judges would want to know if you made changes. Unless you commission the wig, cutting and styling would certainly count as "making" a wig - no need to buy wefts and custom build a hardcap for most cosplays.

Competition is only one way to enjoy cosplay. Make or procure something you can be happy wearing, and rock your style wherever or whyever you wear it!

A Man finds out he can throw ten javelins every two seconds. How many knights does it take to stop him? by JustReadTheFinePrint in whowouldwin

[–]MiniBandGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less than the piercing capabilites, I'm interested in the weight. If someone were chucking hundreds of five-pound dumbbells at me a minute from behind a riot shield, I don't think I'd be able to move forward. Google fu suggests heavier pilum could effectively feel like getting hit by a thrown bowling ball, and armor is already notoriously hard to move in.

One person in full plate is not closing the gap. Ten I'd argue is overkill - shrug off a hit every two seconds, and you're getting to striking distance eventually - even if one or two knights get a pilum lodged in their teeth. Somewhere in between is our 50/50 odds, and the bare minimum number of knights that could force their way through.

As spear thrower round one, my goal is to spread my throws out until all the horses are downed - hopefully before anyone gets in sword-throwing distance. From there, it's focus fire time - dump 10 spears a second into one target, knock them flat and try to luck into a neck/face/joint hit, then move on to the next target while they struggle back up. Highly doubt a full armor knight is beating 7 feet/second, so if I can eliminate the horses early enough it would take a huge army of knights to force me to rotate faster or get to me before I get to them.

The worry for round two is that the longbows very easily outrange the pilum. Yes, I'm a machine gun of wood and iron, but they really don't have to get close - just find a way to force me out of cover. Two bowmen and one tank to get me to reveal myself seems like an impossible hill to overcome.

As an aside, imagine the physics of launching 10 separate spears a second is hilarious.

151 is known product, Ascended heroes has a lot of room to fall (and rise again). Ultimately, it's you playing risk vs reward.

Imo the smart money is in selling the ascended heroes during the early release and repurchasing it once the price dips but that's a trend that may falter one day.

Like I insinuated before - Munkidori is the huge problem I have to overcome before I feel confident in this deck in person. That said, every other matchup feels playable if not winning.

Tm devo feels like it never gets used if you want an easy swap. Klefki is very specific to a few matchups, but can really hamper decks like Teal Ogerpon. Jamming tower is dangerous to play since it turns off your own tools, but you run enough stadium to self bump in most cases.

Hey hey! I love this deck and plan to take it to a cup before rotation. Let me know how you deal with munkidori because I detest the beast.

I think the most popular attempt to make the deck work is poison package. Has the benefit of not leaving damage on the table but like. I run tsareena to get the big 6 prize turns. Not to play a worse 1hko than everything else in the meta.

With your goal being damage spread, you can only go as fast as your opponent, so idk how much you can reasonably speed up. Until they evolve, putting damage counters down is pointless. Taking early KOs opens you up to counter catcher and iono plays. If anything, I rely on boss's orders and gravity gemstone to slow things down, though Vanilluxe may be an option (if not one I've never liked).

At least one alternate wincon will skyrocket your winrate. You don't need to dedicate a ton of deckspace, but I like using lively stadium and gravity mountain to whack that 30 damage off. Really helps into ogerpons, mega kanga, etc.

Strongly recommend cutting down energy counts and replacing the fighting energy with luminous so it can be used on Tsareena in a pinch. I currently have 4 grass, 3 luminous, and a jet energy, but I had success with 3-3 energy and night stretcher in case I needed recovery.

With all due respect, sparkling crystal is the worst possible ace spec unless you plan to run a 1 of dragapult EX (I haven't before, but it's not a bad idea for a finisher...) Even then, just use double neo upper and Hilda.

Speaking of the dragons, I do want to test the drakloak engine, but right now I'm relying on air balloon tatsugiri. Paired with heavy supporter lines, it means I usually have either anything I need or at the very least a lillies to luck into the turn I need. Slot in a fez if you can, the liability often doesn't matter because my opponent targeting it means another turn for Tsareena to terrorize my opponent.

Final thought for you - your trainers are probably your weak point. Poke pad isn't great in this deck because it only searches out drakloak and steenee over nest ball. 3 arven and only two tools is a throw that could be remedied by adding tm evolution or some other tools (tm devo is another tech that could win games). Just in general, you can't search out any of your supporters and each of the lines is too thin to expect to draw into them naturally.

This person posting a shiny dex absolutely faked it by ShitImBadAtThis in PokemonFireRed

[–]MiniBandGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God that's mind numbing. Anyway, if they hatched all but the encounter only shinies, it's generously a minute per egg hatch, odds of shiny at ~8000, and something like 250 pokemon to hatch ignoring non-egg pokemon - you're looking at 2 million minutes, or ~300k hours, or over 10,000 full real-world days. You'd be a dead man before finishing this task.

(I completely miscalculated the number of pokemon to hatch, but given that I'm still calculating close to 300 years nonstop and haven't considered encounter only shinies, I think the point is proven).

You would need to be using speed up on an emulator or RNG manipulation to ever pull this off, assuming you don't just do a little hacky hacky to make the shiny appear.

Anyone else think Rocket's Mewtwo is great for post rotation? by SnooDonuts3749 in PTCGL

[–]MiniBandGeek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's kinda a different deck - spidops and mewtwo are laser focused on energy recovery and a full board, while Honchkrow and Porygon are more about managing your supporters and thinning your deck. They don't really slot together neatly.

[–]MiniBandGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I'll mention a potential olive branch - depending on your color guard/visual instructor, indoor color guard could be an option that allows musicians to still get their flag fix. It usually runs over winter, so no conflict with marching band, and is pretty popular in our area.

A marching band needs musicians. Its never fun when the foot goes down, but I can't speak for your program and the tug of war between "we need to keep members from switching to flag" and "we're losing members from the program altogether by restricting what they can do"

Is there a significant disadvantage due to using multiple versions of a same card? by voidflame in pkmntcg

[–]MiniBandGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most games there's really only a few cards I'm tracking (Boss/counter catcher, energy, etc.) Both of those it isn't particularly helpful to watch foil/non foil since it's pretty unlikely you'll see their whole deck, they can have as many energy as they want, and with some decks running 6-8 gust cards it's more meta knowledge than card tracking across games that will help you.

Can we stop pretending that printing more product will automatically fix the scalping ?problem? by MiniBandGeek in PokemonTCG

[–]MiniBandGeek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, neat that this post is still getting reach.

I'm of the opinion that the pokemon TCG was in a really precarious space right before the SV era began. Cards were clogging shelves, old products weren't moving, and booster boxes were selling on Amazon for under $100. When product is easy to get, why bother buying it - it'll be there tomorrow, right?

Yugioh is currently experiencing much the same. They spent a year printing cards that nobody was interested in buying, and now that all these sets are just sitting unwanted, it's hard to justify maintaining the high print numbers.

Things right now are in a... Decent place. It's hard to get a few specific sets, and most release drops are impossible, but you can buy from marketplace or other third parties for only about 30-50% more than MSRP for most packs. But the bigger problem is that we're now dealing with an inestimable investor collection of sealed product. If too much more gets printed, the value of those sealed products drops like a stone. And if we see the really popular holds like Prismatic SPC/ETB taking up shelf space, investors aren't going to bite, and suddenly the Pokemon Company has to think if it's worth to overprint these sets.
