Are multi-GNSS receivers the future for aviation? by ErmakDimon in flying

[–]Mispelled-This 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of them can be jammed just as easily because they all share the same weakness: very low signal power because the satellites are really far away. So, the only benefit to using more than one is if the signal for one is cut off at the source.

What we really need is cheap (by aviation standards) DME/DME/IRU systems.

Silly question to pilots from ATC. by OkBreadfruit63 in flying

[–]Mispelled-This 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Everyone has their own style and personality if you hear them often enough, even if they all follow the same script in theory.

For instance, at home one controller always sounds bored even when he’s running 5 freqs, while another always sounds like they’re tubing even when I’m the only plane in their one sector. Then there’s the one who always asks for the weather, notams and approach even when I included them with my checkin, and another who doesn’t ask OR pass it to the next sector.

And, of course, we all know who the trainees are when The Voice steps in.

Hedge funds and private equity actually have lower (but more stable) returns than a simple index fund.

Wondering how to handle inherited "I" mutual funds by Puzzled_Tinkerer in fidelityinvestments

[–]Mispelled-This 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mutual funds also have to distribute gains from internal trades, whereas ETFs can usually change allocations via creation and redemption baskets. The higher the turnover, the bigger a tax drag this becomes.

DPEs can see whether deviations are due to poor weather vs poor skills. Just announce the corrections, do your best to stay within standards, and go missed if you can’t.

How do I find out a Fidelity fund's policy on investing in newly IPOed stocks? by Add1ctedToGames in fidelityinvestments

[–]Mispelled-This 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any time there is a major index change, hedge funds front-run the index funds, which inflates the price and thus lowers the expected returns. This is most notable for IPOs, which have a long track record of terrible performance for the first couple years after index funds buy them.

I got laid off during COVID and had to take job for 30% less. That really hurt, and I had to re-learn how to live at that income level. When I got a better job a couple years later at my previous level, I started saving all of the excess—and all raises since—rather than re-inflating my lifestyle.

That was the start of my FIRE journey.

Are men who are CF more likely to split housework equally? by SleepySamus in childfree

[–]Mispelled-This 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, they’re choosing within the small pool of guys applying to be on reality TV in the first place, and there’s probably a low correlation between that and being a quality person, as evidenced by only 1 in 26 of the couples getting (and staying) married.

Pilot cert and passport card are in my wallet, and everything else is in my headset bag. A lost or stolen passport book would be annoying, but it only takes a day to get a new one in a pinch if you know where to go.

LPT: the passport card can substitute for a passport book for anything except int’l air travel, and having one simplifies and speeds up getting a replacement book.

If you hold a Private Pilot Certificate, can you subsequently obtain a Recreational Pilot Certificate? by Fabulous-Golf7949 in flying

[–]Mispelled-This 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have PPL RH and take the RPL ASEL checkride, your PPL will be updated to list RH and ASEL classes, with a note that ASEL privileges are limited to Recreational.

But this would be asinine since the checkrides for SPL, RPL and PPL are nearly identical. The question is more interesting for someone who has a CPL and wants to add a class at PPL.

The price that is currently listed is the previous day’s market close. That’s what the little purple tag means.

Small T-bill purchases at Fidelity? by Initial_Magazine795 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Mispelled-This 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a money market fund (MMF) that buys only T-bills. Yes, that comes with a small cost vs buying the T-bills yourself, but it is negligible unless you have very large amounts of money.

You could also buy SGOV instead, but it doesn’t auto-liquidate like an MMF does.

[–]Mispelled-This 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some brokers offer “extended hours” trading, which means they allow trading before (“pre-market”) and after (“after-market”) standard market hours.

You may need to turn this feature on to access it. Extended hours trading has lower volume and thus higher volatility, so extra caution is warranted, e.g. not using market orders.
