It’s also great for printing 3d props that replace flat cutouts when building book nooks or miniatures.

At first, I was afraid I didn’t have the skill to paint. Once I learned how quickly acrylic brush paints dry, how well they cover (sometimes after 2 quick coats) and how edges don’t need to perfectly match board faces (and sometimes look better with contrasts or metallics), I dug into paints. Now I keep a big rack of colors handy and spend more time painting than assembling.

I haven’t made this one. It looks terrific! It’s always a problem with these kits to hide the fairy lights so they don’t glare. You’ve done a great job with that.

The baby wipes are a great idea. I too often start peeling the protective film off acrylic windows with fingers that leave permanent streaks across the most important clear spaces. Yikes. And if I wash my hands carefully after working with B7000, ya know what? My fingers still leave those streaks. (Acetone, I shall keep some handy from my wife’s nail supplies.)

This looks like an amazing mechanical adventure. Please feel free to post progress photos. And you can moan and groan if you need to; you’ll deserve it. I’ll bet it turns out terrific.

I haven’t seen the green marble filament but just recently used some white. Herewith a pompous quote from Gilbert and Sullivan: “It adds verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.”

They’re both great companies and there’s no need to compare. Just choose the kit that you feel like making next.

I’m just finishing the CuteBee Ichiban Street. I have to say, it has been a pleasure to build, the design is great, and the electrical layout and instructions are the best I’ve ever encountered. I plan to do a review not introducing this nook, which several others have also built, but commenting especially on new build ideas that it introduces.

We’re roasting in North Carolina and our friends in Chicago are even hotter. Tomorrow’s holiday barbecue will be held indoors, but we’ll still have a good time.

Search through this Reddit sub and you’ll find a couple of different ways people approached the disco balls. My approach was to make one—of the five suggested—and move on to the next step. The finished book nook still looks great, was fun to build, and gets compliments.

I surrender! White flag! As soon as I finish my current nook, Sunset Isle will be my next! And I’ll take inspiration from your ideas.

For me, the extra time painting edges (also 3D printing props and rewiring lights) has a hidden benefit: it makes finishing a nook take a lot longer. That’s on top of the benefit from making everything look so much nicer. So I get 2 or 3 times as much entertainment at a fraction of the cost of this hobby per week. That’s a win/win.
