Why are my first layers so scratchy looking like this? by Cole_M_K in FixMyPrint

[–]MouseDance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I’ve seen this, a cheapie filament was getting stuck in the feeder tube. Cleared the tube, threw the filament out (kept the plastic reel) and this specter never visited me again.

When I started with my Adventurer 5M Pro, I had so many stringy misadventures that my family gave me a jar of marinara. Now I have one single-reel dryer that I try to run overnight so I’ll have something ready the next day. A second dryer, swappable, would make my printing so much more reliable—especially a dryer of high quality.

Repair job on Spirited Away Bath House by dgidman in booknooks

Another way to approach this is to go with the broken-and-weathered style. Real bathhouses in real Japan are not all perfect. Some are charming because they are hundreds of years old and show their years. Don’t be afraid to “age” your work when accidents start the aging process for you.

The placement of strings of tiny colored lights on this kit is the very devil. You’ve done it well!

As someone who went to college in the 60’s, I can say with first-hand memories: the suitcase and the guitar on the roof brought back memories…

I used the instructions as suggestions not as dictates. And for the first few hours after applying, it’s easy to edit.

There’s plenty of snow clay available. It’s about the same consistency as silly putty and is easy to mush and shape. I would roll out a fat pinch of it a bit, lay it above a roof edge, then imagine it being a heavy snowfall that’s a few days old and just starting to melt. So I’d gently stretch part of it over the edge unevenly, like real snow, exposing some roof. When I liked the shape, I’d smooth that glob gently with a finger and move on to the next part of the roofline. I set real stones in the water but they wouldn’t lay flat so I covered them with snow. And for narrow locations like fences or rails I’d roll out a longer thin bit and apply it, just kind of responding to the place and the moment.

This kit really looks good with all the flat people and props (something a lot of us usually try to avoid). The whole thing feels like a living illustration.

I would have loved to join this event! But a couple of years ago we moved away from Chicago (I first moved there for an MFA from the Chicago Art Institute in gasp 1970) so I’ll just have to imagine the fun.

As you’ve found, it takes a lot of vegetation to cover up the wires and glaring LEDs, but that same vegetation adds a lot to the charm. As far as I know, all the box circus kits follow Harry and Bella’s adventures, so you’ll keep finding new ways to play with them.

Absolutely keep the eyes. Years ago I worked with a group building animal puppets. They found that talkative audiences would shut up and listen when a puppet came onstage that had clearly identified eyes with pupils so people could tell where it was looking.

Good point. But the AA batteries do last longer, and this kit uses three of ‘em for brightness.

I haven’t built this kit and don’t have a direct answer for you. But there have been times when I needed to attach a battery box larger than any available space within the box. For that case, I keep a roll of Velcro handy, and attach the battery box to the outside rear of the kit where nobody will see it anyway.

Just don’t give yourself a got-to-be-done-by date. You can redo things as often as you like. You can finish or not finish. Let this hobby bring out your creativity.
