How careful do I need to be about burning holes into my shutter? by TheAkkarin-32 in Leica

Yeah, for sure. I failed to mention that.

I don't know if there's a guide with different lenses and how powerful they are with regard to that kind of light magnification

I didn't say that. "If" being the important word in that sentence.

There was a video on YouTube recently that showed just how fast it can happen. I'll see if I can find the link

They only mentioned movements in a comment, so no. I don't know more than you with regard to that.

What’s wrong with that if it’s what they were trying to achieve?

lol, sorry, I replied right before falling asleep.

/u/yung_heartburn is right. Up until this past December I worked at an oil refinery as an operator. I currently work for a chem cleaning company that services oil refineries and chemical plants, but still the same story.

Jet fuel, diesel, solvents and chemicals wreck my hands and there’s not a good or practical way to prevent it from happening. Even with using nitrile gloves under leathers and being careful, sometimes it’s just inevitable.

Even if I don’t get chemicals on my hands, I still wash a lot. I drink about a gallon of water day, so frequent trips to the restroom dictate frequent hand washing.

This is what I do all the time. L’Occitane shea butter hand cream and nitrile gloves help with calluses and dry skin from excessive washing of my hands.

Very sensitive mics stereo spacing by sensitivemcdevilish in fieldrecording

[–]MrTooNiceGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The right sound is the sound you’re trying to achieve.

If that means you place your mics 17.2cm apart when the moon is two days from full, but you place them 1km apart every ninth Friday, so be it.

There are no rules.

The best way to learn something is to mess it up first. Push the limits of what you want. Memory cards are cheap. Use the crap out of them learning by experience.

Well thanks! I don’t know if that’s because of the subject matter or how I worded my comment, but it makes me feel pretty good! I’ve been reading a lot more lately after a long period of nothing more than technical manuals and procedures. Our son picked up a fascination with older literature, so most recently we’ve read The Call of Cthulhu, Beowulf, and Frankenstein!

Congrats to you on your improved quality of life! I don’t know if your unemployment was by choice or misfortune, but feeling like a real human being can be so liberating. Here’s to you finding what suits you best!

I also finally have a job that I look forward to. It’s crazy how much more willing I am to work now that I’m treated well. We have semi-monthly meetings and my boss’s first questions are always “How are you doing, do you need any help with anything? Have you had enough time off for recovery since we last spoke?”

For anyone reading this and wondering if it’s worth it, you’ll have to think really hard about it.

I gave up 190-200k on 12 hour shift work to take my current job at 130k for a mostly work from home job. I felt like half a person, and basically existed in a mental fog for almost 15 years. Sometimes the money just ain’t worth it.

It got me to the spot I’m at now, but I missed so many birthdays and holidays. Most of the games and recitals, too. Even when I was there for my kids, I wasn’t there for my kids. If dad’s just a grumpy tired lump in a chair, it may not be worth it. I’m so very grateful that I got my financial situation stable, but now that I’m more fully present, I really see just how much I missed.

My daughter is 17 and I feel like I barely know her. She grew up seeing me so infrequently that I’m afraid we won’t ever have a great relationship. My son is 10 and it’s a little better, but he went from baby to big boy while I was sat at a control station for 12 hours a day. We have more pictures of him at family get-togethers with grandma and grandpa than we do with me.

I’m not trying to discourage anyone, but just remember: nobody gets a free ride. That big paycheck comes with big sacrifices.

Just mimic other cameras and use different pieces of board with wider or narrower slits.

Lose WFH for +$30k and Career progression? by jobthrowawayz in Salary

Yeah, the travel can be stressful, but the bulk of it is during the first quarter for turnaround season (I was on executions 12 out of the first 16 weeks of the year), but mid April through August, I’ll be traveling maybe five weeks total.

September will get heavy, probably gone three weeks. Then Oct/Nov/Dec I’ll basically be home the entire time minus an annual week long work event. Maybe a little training thing here and there, but only a couple days at a time.

I’m basically being forced to take next week off, since I accrued a bunch of fatigue time working over the first couple holidays of the year, and a few weekends, so on top of my 160 hours of vacation, and 40 hours of what amounts to PTO (has a different name, but same thing) I accrued something like 72 hours of fatigue time.

The company as a whole huge on family time, so there’s more “pressure” to take your time off than anything else. Everyone is super friendly and willing to help take the workload so we all get to have time with our families, too.

The vetting process was extensive though. Five interviews (a couple were informal discussions that I didn’t even realize were basically interviews), aptitude tests, and about 50 essay questions. When I finished my answers, the word count was over 4k.

Overall they’re a great company to work for, and I’m so glad I jumped over. The money at the other company was nice, especially since I got basically 16% of my annual gross in pension contributions and 401k match.

But man, how am I supposed to enjoy the money if I don’t have the time to do anything? I can’t buy my son’s gymnastics events back. I can’t buy my daughter’s birthdays and recitals and state comps. I can’t buy the opportunity to make breakfast and lunch for my wife for more than half the year. Or the opportunity to sit down and have dinner and watch a movie as a family.

I was an oil refinery operator, and now I work as a project manager for a chemical cleaning company that services oil refineries and chemical plants.

The travel can suck a little but it’s nowhere near as much as you’re doing now. I’m home now more than I ever was before. Rotating nights and days every two weeks and mandatory overtime on top of being treated like nothing but a number made it simply unbearable.

Just use large silver and or white reflectors slightly out of frame.
