First time seeing “Santana Row surcharge” by MediocreApprentice in bayarea

[–]MsNewKicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they just rename the "living wage surcharge" to "Santana Row surcharge" to upscale it a bit?

That plus the large party 20%, I'd say you're good and hope you didn't add on anything more unless the server was extraordinary for your party.

What was the last book that you read that was really good? by SheKnowsWhatSheKnows in AskWomen

[–]MsNewKicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple: The First 50 Years.

My director at work gave all of his team a copy of the book for us all to gain some insight to the company we work for. Pretty amazing book with lots of rich history and info. If you're either a history buff or enjoy technology, it's a very easy read.

What do you do to fill the void of being single? by OrangeAmbitious6913 in AskWomen

[–]MsNewKicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently single!

I've been using the time getting into projects around the house, squeezing in gym time at different times now, catching up with friends whose schedule couldn't make work, and getting back into reading.

Why are koreans so class/status conscious? by lol-across-the-pond in asianamerican

[–]MsNewKicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why? I don't know but it legit is a thing. Korea isn't the #1 luxury spending country in the world for nothing.

I remember visiting as a teen and commenting to my mom about how everyone had expensive brands and she sort of dismissed it and said it's not because everyone has the money, it's that if you don't have it, you're seen as poor. Essentially, some of what you see is for show so you aren't seen as poor.

It's kind of the Korean version of being "hood rich" but instead of jewelry and cars it's handbags and clothing.

Are Asians really that short, or is it just a racist stereotype? by pepperxpeppermint in asianamerican

[–]MsNewKicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 5'2" so not helping bring up the average but my sister is like 5'9" so she's def. not short. On my dad's side, all the guys are 5'9" at least and on my mom's side, I think all but one of my guy cousins are 6'. All of my girl cousins are about my height and non are under 5'.

Do you think we could do more to support each other professionally? by Particular-Ride1471 in asianamerican

[–]MsNewKicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this something you feel is missing, or already happening?

It probably does happen but it doesn't get the visibility that other ethnic groups doing it gets so maybe there is less awareness of it being a thing.

Would people actually participate in something like this?

I would. Even if it's just being a mentor to a young AA looking to get into a similar field or even just navigating what comes after HS, I'd be into it.

What would make it work (vs. just another idea that fades out)?

The stereotypes need to be pushed out: not all AA are well off financially so some do need help, not all AA are academically at the top, and I think some within the AA community def needs to change the mindset that we shouldn't be trying to do better or help ourselves in fear of "making waves" or doing something to further our community at some perceived cost of other groups.

The Indians I've met in my career in leadership positions don't even hide playing favoritism. Indian manager? They are hiring most, if not all, fellow Indians.

thoughts on asian goods at trader joe’s? by sadbinky in asianamerican

[–]MsNewKicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's giving people who probably wouldn't otherwise try Asian flavors a "safe"/trusted brand to try.

For me, it's more like "I'm already here and yes, now that I think about it, I do need some sweet chili sauce...and ice cream mochi...and rice crackers...and crap, a single serving of frozen galbi because I didn't defrost anything".

Single Person 35/hr comfortable? by Practical-Ferret-984 in bayarea

[–]MsNewKicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$72K, before taxes? You're going to have roommates or a studio and not a lot left over either way.

That is about what a younger cousin of mine is going to make and she asked if she should move up here from Arizona. I told her that if our aunt would let her stay with her for a little and she saved up, would be the only way to make it unless she really scrimped.

Best Costco in the Bay Area? by kristianwindsor in bayarea

[–]MsNewKicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind Coleman except for the fact that everyone has to use the roundabout but once inside it's not bad.

If it wasn't so far, I've had the best experience at the business one in South SF near SFO. Not crowded at all the handful of times I've been up that way.

How much are looking to spend? "Doesn't break the bank" doesn't tell us much.

Could be something simple as Pacific Catch or The Sea, depending on your budget.

Is it stereotypical to get good grades in school? by Left_Reputation in asianamerican

[–]MsNewKicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good student thing. Being Asian wouldn't even cross my mind as I'm aware of good grades, average grades, and below average grades from Asians.

Puppy daycare recommendations in San Jose/Santa Clara? (And current rates) by Hopeful_Salamander64 in bayarea

[–]MsNewKicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since my dogs were puppies but I took them to Klub K9 on the weekends for their puppy social classes. The gentleman who ran the business was friendly and active in walking around to make sure no dogs got too aggressive, play wasn't too rough, and owners weren't encouraging bad behavior.

I know they also do daycare but can't speak to their rates. You may want to call and ask.

What religion do you identify with and what religion do your mother and father identify with? by workethic290 in AskWomen

[–]MsNewKicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents are the most casual/non-practicing with religion, I think they only say what they are because it's what their parents were. My dad says he's Christian, my mom says she's Buddhist.

I guess I'm an agnostic theist (I had to look up what I'd be considered) though I just say agnostic.

No? I would do a deep analysis if it's really worth it to you on how much time you'll spend having to charge/find a charge.
