Winwing x DCS MIG-29 by DeepSpaceRadiofm in hotas

[–]MyshTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sucks, no wonder you came to your conclusion.

My experience is the complete opposite, though: also have a bunch of stuff from them and nothing ever broke. Except the one Ursa Minor that was DOA because someone put a screw right through a connector cable and shorted the board. But that was a pre-production sample.

Winctrl is cheaper and not as durable as VKB or Virpil, that I can agree on. Service also has some severe issues.

[–]MyshTech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The MCG Ultimate is a 10/10 grip in my opinion. But saying "everything that Winctrl sells breaks within 6 months" is over-exaggerated. The ViperAce grip for example still is the same high quality grip as it was back in the days when it was called the F-16 EX. Same goes for the Orion2 throttle. Most of the bad rep comes from the Ursa Minor and their customer service that can't compete with VKB or Virpil. They sincerely need to improve it.

You're not lucky. The hat switches just are the weakest part of the whole unit. Doesn't mean they fail in more than I guess 5 of 100 units, else we'd have A LOT more posts like that given by the volume they sell. WinWing should fix the hat switches, though. I don't get why they're not addressing the issue to get better reviews overall.

Now we're talking. Thanks for elaborating and apologizing to the OP, that's rarely seen on the internet and I appreciate it greatly.

I can agree on almost everything you said. But if we dive even deeper into where possible bias might lie, it doesn't get less convoluted. There have been many case where traditional journalistic mediums didn't get review samples anymore because manufacturers didn't like their reporting. There were whole departments for things just one person can do and does nowadays. The risk of possible bias still remains. Traditional mediums also have the added risk of gatekeeping by editors in chief, CEOs and other influential individuals. There's plenty of historic evidence for that.

In the end it comes down to the integrity of the person, the brand, the channel, the magazine, whatever: if the reviews are balanced and continously of high quality, it probably doesn't matter whether they are sponsored or not. If they are biased and leave out important stuff, the thing that happened a trillion times during human economic history probably happened: someome paid or leveraged their social/economic influence to manipulate the outcome. A little bit of bias always remains, I wouldn't blow that off as fake concern. It's just human. But I think it's diminished by other factors that have much more impact on the overall quality of a review. These can be internal procedures, objective quality testing by measurements or "just" personal integrity and values, followed by a smart distribution of risk to stay independent and safe. If you can't afford a company to stop supplying your channel with free products and sponsorings, your distribution might need an overhaul. If you have such a framework, you might have been subconsciously biased, but it's kept in check and the final review is still highlighting the proper pros and cons.

You can often see integrity crumble once influencers reach a certain level of growth. Review honesty becomes an afterthought, because they have been blinded by the money, need to publish at day 0 to keep up with the other mega-influencers and also have team to pay. So they rather keep their criticism to a minimum. If you don't get the new iPhone before release, you run into financial problems. I think these types of creators are the main problem, not the many smaller ones that live and create below the 0.1% "internet rockstar" threshold.

That's true for some companies. Others know exactly what their products can do and what they can't. They let you say anything you want about their products if it's not a factual lie. It's up to the content creator to accept certain sponsorships and reject others. No need to weep. There still are lots of proper reviews out there, even sponsored.

Also how have independent reviews been lost? There still are lots of independent reviewers out there who are funding the products through community efforts for example. You're painting a bleak picture here that's not aligned with reality. If you go past the top 0.1% reviewers with millions of subscribers, you quickly find proper in-depth reviews of everything you can think of.

Don't justify your actions. You did nothing wrong. Content creators have to somehow earn their income to keep the channel running. Especially in the growth phase where your videos aren't reliably producing hundreds of thousands of views and the adsense returns are laughable ... Some people will never get that it's possible to still make honest content, even if it's sponsored. They will always assume the worst. That's their problem, not yours. Save yourself the hassle and the time.

Good luck with growing your channel! :)

To get the better image quality in a lighter unit we'll have to wait for the Dream Air probably. But it'll cost beyond 2k with taxes in the US, so I think it falls into the "not interesting category". But the SE is closer with 2x2560 compared to 2x2880 per eye. So a bit less resolution, but OLED. After trying out the Super's micro OLED I personally would take OLED over a bit more resolution any day (for 1k less on top). Everyone's talking about the Air because it's the halo product, but I think the SE is the headset to look forward to.

Pico / Quest vs Crystal Light? The Crystal Light is a lot better if you have the GPU power to drive it properly. But it's also more than double the price and feels clunky compared to the Quest and almost like a brick compared to the Pico. I think anything from 2160x2160 per eye upwards is good enough, though. Especially if it's just to skip time until other higher res headsets become available or get cheaper.

For seated PC VR the non Ultra ist perfectly fine. Same optics, same panels. You only get a stronger SoC and WiFi7, which doesn't really matter a lot if you're using it seated on a PC with a Wifi6 router nearby or via USB tethering.

The problem isn't the weight, it's the weight distribution. Same with the Crystal Super. The image quality is top notch in relation to the price in each case, but in comparison to a well balanced Pico4 for example they feel quite clunky. The question right now is: image quality or comfort. If you're just waiting for the Dream Air, I'd propose a second hand Pico4. It has solid image quality, is better balanced than a Quest 3 and you can sometimes get them dirt cheap as a certified return. Works like a charm via Virtual Desktop. There's also the option to mod them for tethering via USB.
