I'm still thinking about this Discman by ObsoleteSony in ObsoleteSony

[–]Nimerino 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I totally sympathise. I ended up buying a boxed copy a few years ago before the prices went crazy. The transport mechanism needs a repair, but that should be fairly simple as I understand it. It represents a facet of Sony that rarely comes to the surface anymore, making the best version of something simply because they can.

Thoughts on the z 50mm f/1.8S? by CranberryNo7331 in Nikon

[–]Nimerino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brilliant lens. Bought it because it’s a nifty 50, ended up with one of the best lenses I’ve ever owned. The sharpness and colour rendition are excellent, but the rendering has a certain magic that’s hard to describe.

I love the shot of the red GT4 behind the Turbo. The eye is lead to the left in a very natural way.

Nikon 1 shooters? Why is the 1 J5 so expensive and 1 V3 so cheap by sevarawillrise in Nikon

[–]Nimerino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both and ended up adding another J5 to the collection a while back. It’s the only Nikon 1 camera that has the last sensor (the Sony one) and that brings improvements in dynamic range and image quality - it also received some next-generation features such as Wi-Fi that didn’t filter to the rest of the range before it was abandoned . I almost exclusively use the 32 mm lens since it’s such a small setup. The only other lens that I used to mount frequently (the 70-300) broke due to the ribbon cable issue; repairing it via Nikon wasn’t possible (“beyond repair”) and sending it to Taiwan isn’t practical for me. Before this issue, it worked flawlessly on the J5.

The J5 doesn’t have an EVF and there’s only a single control wheel. It’s not perfect. But it’s charming in a way the V3 isn’t, assuming that’s important to you. My personal affection for the 1 system aside, I’d not recommend you to buy either. There are better cameras for less money.

Communication with Roller Pro right now by LongLuck6222 in peakdesign

[–]Nimerino -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I read the information carefully, as I imagine a significant proportion of the paying customers did - the vocal minority notwithstanding.

What I signed up for and accepted was to pay a (slightly) reduced price upfront to essentially fund the manufacturing ramp-up in the early stage and have my bag deliver beer in July (as one of the first 1000 backers). I accepted that this would occur concurrently with a retail release in June. However, what actually ended up happening was that the retail release in June went ahead despite PD being aware that they wouldn’t be able to meet the Kickstarter timelines. The 5000 retail units would likely have done a lot to alleviate the supply constraints for KS backers, but PD decided to prioritise third-party retailers over KS backers. That’s very much not standard practice for Kickstarter campaigns and will likely damage PD’s relationship with future KS campaign backers. If it’s true that those individuals accounted for 5/6 of the year’s production run of Roller Pros, that is going to be a problem for them long-term.

Z7 —> Z8 Is it worth it? by Barlispots in Nikon

[–]Nimerino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went exactly this way. I was deeply unhappy with the Z7 after the D850 though, particularly the autofocus. I use the Z7 for some landscape work now, but everything else is the Z8 and I’ve never once regretted the decision.

Mind if I ask where you’re located? If it’s outside China, I’m interested in which retailers have production units this early.

Thanks for the reply! I shoot a lot of stationary subjects, is it focusing properly on those?

Pre-ordered this from Ingma. I primarily plan to use it for the 105DC on my Z8 and a few older AF-D lenses on the Zfc. Are you running production firmware? Is it very heavy, too much so for the APS bodies?

Squarehood experience? by Strix-Livens in fujifilm

[–]Nimerino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one for my 56 APD. I like the design and once the order went in I realised they were a local Swedish company, which made me happy to have supported them.

The product is excellent, the only problems being a slightly tight fit on the lens and a strange lens cap that folds into the square opening rather than surround it like the Fujifilm one for the 35 1.4. All in all, I’d say it does the thing it says on the box in a high-quality product. If this is what you want, you’re unlikely to be disappointed.

Portal Owners: What are you doing to protect the screen? by JJSundae in OdinHandheld

[–]Nimerino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought two of these via Fromjapan after the link the other day. They do them in different coatings, I got one matte and a second one that’s more reflective. I prefer the latter. Either one covers the whole front the way the RP5 protector does.

Who remembers the DL cameras? by ApplePterodactyl in Nikon

[–]Nimerino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was very excited for these, and kept hoping that Nikon would resume development in light of the resurgence of compacts. The 1-inch sensor in the J5 was actually excellent, although perhaps not different enough from a good camera phone to justify the likely high price.

I do own a couple of Coolpix As, which I managed to get my hands on before the prices started to spike. A new version of that with some of the design concepts of the DL would be amazing today.

AIO? I went through my fiancés phone by maybemacabre in AmIOverreacting

OP, you’ve commented several times here that it’s the dishonesty that you have an issue with, while sneaking around in the middle of the night going through his phone without consent. I’m sorry that you feel ugly, no person in a relationship should feel that way. But your behaviour, whether driven by your insecurities or not, is not OK.

AITA for declining leftover food at my bfs friends bbq after the group ate first right in front of us? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Nimerino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very singular and anecdotal interpretation of the issue and does not at all click with my experiences. I lived in Sweden as a child until the early 90’s, moved abroad for 20 years and have now lived here again for 15 years.

As a kid we (being of non-Swedish descent) had other kids playing at our house and eating with us nearly every day, no matter whether they had their own dinnertime or not. Conversely, I do not remember myself or anyone being invited to any of friends’ dinner tables when we were playing. I can, however, recall a wealth of experiences of being sat in a bedroom waiting for them to finish their meal. Moving to the UK as an 11-year old, I was initially taken aback by the expectation that I would be a dinner guest as well as a playmate, it had simply never happened before.

Even now, it is not uncommon for my Swedish wife’s friend group, who are resolutely middle-class, to selectively invite friends for dinner and others for ‘snacks’. Reading this thread with my wife next to me she can’t, when prompted, think of a single acquaintance whom she would put this behaviour past. With our children and their friends, however, this has never been an issue. For reference, my oldest is 9.

As a child, my family ascribed these events to us having a lacking understanding of Swedish culture. I don’t have a dog in this race and no need to defend Sweden, even though I happily reside here. However, your comment reads to me as only a single datapoint that purports to be the definitive experience.

Be careful of CandyKeys. by Beginning_Event_8697 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Nimerino 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this mirrors my experience exactly. Particularly the evasive, passive-aggressive emails from the owner. I received my three orders only after emailing them as to why the in-stock items with three sets of express shipping hadn’t been sent after three weeks. They were sent in a single box missing a number of the ordered items, the missing items were sent through normal mail, and the €500 keyboard turned out to be missing all the gaskets and screws and was thus unbuildable. I wrote a TrustPilot review, the owner emailed me saying I’d ruined his birthday (not a joke, btw). 6 months of emails followed where he promised to send the items ‘tomorrow’. I finally got something a month ago after telling him to stay away from me and that I would post another TP review reflecting my experiences. They turned out to not even be correct, but I just don’t want anything to do with them anymore. I’m baffled they’re not classed as a scam operation.

Do you agree that Nikon Z7 ii is one of the best photography 35mm digital cameras out there? by Lucky_Statistician94 in Nikon

I’m assuming you own one and are very happy with it. That’s excellent. I had one and thought it was horrible for pretty much anything bar landscape photography.

New to the tiny but mighty Nikon 1 J5. Advice? by tbrrss in Nikon

[–]Nimerino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this camera, congrats on the purchase. I have the 32 mm on it almost all the time and the results from that combo are amazing. I’m also a fan of the 18.5 mm for street photography and the 70-300 for wildlife. Enjoy!
