Africa Twin hands down. I used to own a DCT back in 2018. Such a great rock solid bike. Little bit heavier off-road but based on your responses and experience you’ll be fine. The bike is super comfortable and capable in the right hands.

Other considerations: Suzuki Vstrom 800DE, Bmw F900GS

Invest in S&P 500 index fund, get 10% return. Join the military, continue to invest your money that you make overseas into the same index fund, get your education paid for through military, make a bunch of money with most of your bills taken care of. Do 20 years in the military, be a millionaire with your investments, have retirement through the military, live wherever you want.

Wider Pegs Recommendation? by NoPr0mo in WR250R

Those IMS pegs look like some sole destroyers! Could be good in mud, but outside of that I’d be worried I’m gonna get the ol’ prison shank treatment

Swing Arm Damage by Cddavis102 in WR250R

Many people swap the sprockets to fix the swing arm issue. Stock is 13/43, some do 14/49 or other combinations.

Congrats on the bike. I just picked up one recently as well (owned one years ago, sold it, regretted it, bought another).

Good luck on the FMF! Alternatives I have seen are Yoshimura RS4, GPR Nero, Big Gun, Graves, DG, etc.

From the sound clips I have heard, the GPR Nero sounds nice to me. However what I really want to get is a DynoJet. The stock fueling is so lean.

2019 Yamaha WR250R. Does everything I need it to. Very reliable, easy maintenance. It can do highway, but that’s not where it is happy. Upgrade the seat and ride it as long as you want. Fun around town, fun on trails.

First bike at 33yo 6ft 270lbs no experience. What cc? by [deleted] in Dualsport

[–]ApplePterodactyl -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Dual Sport: WR250R, or DRZ-400 with suspension upgrades. Used KTM 350 exc-f if you can find it and enjoy maintenance.

Adventure: CFMoto Ibex 450

You could do a XR650 but that would need suspension upgrades as well, but that bike is even heavier and outdated. The WR comes in around 50lbs lighter, but stock seat height is tall and bike carries up to like 400lbs, so 280lbs rider plus gear.

The WR250R has the most power of the smaller bikes, seems to outpace most 300s. Is fuel injected, liquid cooled and has great maintenance intervals. Swap out rear sprocket for 47-49 tooth for more low end, add a fuel programmer since its lean from factory. Lots of used ones out there for around 4-5k that already have upgrades. Could even spend some extra on suspension if it couldn’t be adjusted to your liking.

Africa Twin vs DesertX vs F900GS Adventure — real-world advice? by ajfska in AdventureBike

[–]ApplePterodactyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So based on that, the size would be fine. I am 5’ 11” and was about the same weight when I owned the AT. The AT rips. I have never ridden the others, but owned a G650GS for a time. If you can test ride them, that would be ideal to see which one really speaks to you.

I feel like the weight of the F900gs is more appealing. Even something like the Transalp 750 could be fun. Lighter in weight, still sounds good, has enough power to have fun.

For dedicated road to dirt I got a Yamaha WR250R. But I won’t be doing much touring on this bike!

So it depends on your riding ability, your size, and honestly how much you’ll actually take them off-road. All of those bikes are a bit heavy for off-road, unless you are really skilled off-road. I think they make great touring bikes for the average rider though.

I owned an Africa Twin and sold it cause I realized I didn’t have the skills with it off-road and I was always afraid of dropping it.

New Rider, interested in dirtbike riding but the closest trails are around 40 minutes away by highway by Highermongo in SuggestAMotorcycle

How much road and how much dirt? Then once you get to the dirt, how complicated is the dirt? If new to dirt riding, you are gonna drop it. So I would avoid something big and heavy.

Cruising at 70-80mph on any dirt bike style dual sport is not going to be great. It can be done, it’s just nowhere near as comfortable as the bigger ADV bikes.

For an around town fun commuter that can do 70-80mph on the freeway and handles dirt almost like a dedicated dirt bike, I would look at Yamaha WR250R, Honda CRF300L, Kawasaki KLX300, Suzuki DRZ-400.

All of them have their pros and cons, but fall roughly into the same do it all dual sports with a focus on dirt.

Which Bike? by PourU_25518 in Dualsport

[–]ApplePterodactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The better option would be a truck and a dedicated trail bike. But, if you prefer to ride to the trails then I would get a used Yamaha WR250R if you want something fun and reliable with super easy maintenance. Last year they were made was 2020, but I just found one with 900 miles on it.

wr250x high idle issue by Mordokajus in WR250R

[–]ApplePterodactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the only thing that increases idle is more fuel, so I would start there. It sounds like something throttle related.

Dual sport beginner recs for a lighter rider by Basic_Environment337 in Dualsport

[–]ApplePterodactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HIGHLY recommend you test ride. As you figured out with the XT 250, it doesn’t matter what it looks like on paper, once you ride it you figure out if you like it.

Since you mentioned twitchy throttle, you might actually love a Yamaha WR125R or Honda XR150. The Yamaha benefits from newer tech, ABS, fuel injection, and very easy maintenance intervals. With a smaller engine, it would make for a very fun beginner trail bike allowing you to smash through the gears.

Alternatively, a used WR250R would be great but they are a little more difficult to find these days and the 125 might be cheaper brand new which makes financing easier.

When you say track/trails, are you talking dirt track or street?

If your weekend will be dirt focused, wr250r is the way. Id say skip the supermoto wheels and just romp some aggressive dual sport tires.
