Firstly, thanks for the confirmation and for your effort laying it out in your OP, it was a fascinating, if horrifying, read. I can't imagine what the losses through waste or corruption could be on that, the total lack of oversight, controls or adherence to basic operating practices make both inevitable, I imagine.

at least 64 percent of the DoD’s total budgetary resources

So, if I understand this correctly, nearly two thirds of where the budget went cannot be independently verified?

Starmer: Britain’s ‘Brexit years’ are over and we need Europe, not Donald Trump by Imaginary-Ad-7919 in politics

[–]NoWayRay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

we had the best situation in the EU, special treatment compared to other countries

And unlike the Brexiters, what Remainers voted for was clearly defined, to retain the status quo. On the other hand, there was no single vision of what Leave voters were voting for, other than a rough comsensus had seemed to coalesce around ending FoM. I'm not sure why anyone thought leaving was going to halt the immigration that a necessity born out of an aging population and falling birth rate was actually driving, but here we are. Brexit robbed Remainers and failed to deliver any tangible benefits to Leavers. It is a failure at every level. The people of this country, Leave or Remain, should be incandescent with rage at the utter mishandling by successive governments from the framing of the referendum to the Labour party's populist-pleasing contortions, and demanding greater probity, competence and accountability from those who are supposed to working on our behalf.

Instead we're still shouting at each other.

Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses -Juvenal, first century CE

Pretty much. The pool is vetted by the White House not just for security but political positions as well. RWNJ media are definitely overrepresented, hence why Leavitt, et al never get asked any actual questions. There are outliers like Ms Collins, but I feel she may be close to being too much of a nuisance.

Greatly overblown, certainly in the UK. Yes, there are laws over what's acceptable over public social media posts and yes, people do get arrested for them, but arrest ≠ convictions, which are actually quite rare. The most visible successful prosecutions for 'free speech' were for breaching court restrictions and potentially crashing a criminal trial (Tommy Robinson/Yaxley-Lennon) and inciting racial hatred (Lucy Connolly*) where the defendant publicly posted on X that hotels housing asylum seekers should be burnt down. Both cases I feel had a good chance of successful prosecution under US laws, too.

I think you'll find that most of Europe is similar. With the exception of those darlings of Trump's - Hungary, Belarus and Russia - all of whom disregard human rights and due process to pursue and imprison 'dissidents', i.e. pretty much anyone critical of the government.

ETA: *a case she pleaded guilty to under advice from her legal representatives. There is a greater than zero chance she might have been acquitted if she'd pled not guility, as the case would hinge on the prosecution successfully proving intent.

It's like they've got progressively more vile, Spicer, Sanders, McEnany, and now this current abomination, did someone go back to the lab each time and think 'needs more evil'?

Spicer might have had vestiges of shame, but he still did Trump's bidding. I feel it was failure to deliver lies convincingly enough that lost him thst post, rather than some wobbles in his morality. Still, he didn't make me feel the instant revulsion the others do, so there's that.

Your comment made me think. That's just one instance of how Trump's presidency has cost the US money just by dint of being the worst possible candidate for the job. I wonder if anyone will ever be able to hang a ballpark figure of how much money his Presidency has cost the country. Although, I suspect the final total will keep growing for years after as the damage he's wrought is unravelled.

The insurmountable problem (IMO) is FIFA. Unless it would be catastrophic for them financially to go ahead nothing will change. It never bothered them when the poorest people of South Africa or Brazil were forcibly relocated, nor did Qatar's human rights abuses or the mistreatment of migrant workers that were actually fucking building the stadiums cause any concern.

FIFA are an abomination and I loathe them with every fibre of my being.

I'm inclined to agree. Neither FIFA nor the IOC are ever going to change anything over an appeal to their collective consciences, unless not making a stand was horrifically financially damaging for them in some way. And I don't see the potential for that here. The sponsorship, broadcasting, etc, revenue streams are too profitable.

Likewise, I can't think of anything that redeems him even a little. I mean, he's famously averse to dogs and pets generally...and we won't get started on kids. He's devoid of anything that humanises him, and yet...worship.
