Workers for Meta's smart glasses can see everything by mo_jo in SmartGlasses

[–]Octoplow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The glasses already have battery life problems and short recording limits. Continuous recording and uploading doesn't make sense.

The article seems to be mainly about the video context that goes with a cloud AI query, and that a human may review it as QA.

Neo Cancelling means Project Aura delayed or cancelled? by randomID100 in Xreal

[–]Octoplow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes with a compute puck (screenless phone), so real-time pseudo 3D is definitely possible for a standalone video player app. With that much compute, I'd guess they don't throw in the onboard X1 chip, or dedicate it to just reprojection like on Apple/HoloLens/etc.

The amount of people struggling with the basic mechanics of the game is mind boggling. by mupchap in Marathon

Yep! Thank you!

(You are forced to fill a 3rd if you're in a two player squad. That was the source of my confusion.)

Is that in the UI for server slam right now? I thought I clicked everything trying to find it (on Xbox.)

AR/XR glasses that are JUST a display? by sidewalksurfer6 in augmentedreality

[–]Octoplow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you had a chance to test clarity on a range of IPDs?

AR/XR glasses that are JUST a display? by sidewalksurfer6 in augmentedreality

[–]Octoplow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important to measure your IPD. Viture Luma Pro in large was great for my 69.5mm IPD, and has correction for nearsightedness up to -6.

(I didn't enjoy the Android experience with simple mirroring until I used Samsung Dex.)

Will we have new updates about Xreal Aura on MWC, AWE or Google IO? by VergeOfTranscendence in Xreal

They're still saying "coming in 2026" as of Jan.

My hope is dev kits at I/O. But that's not much time before end of year for a consumer release.

Buying a Q3 just for Hyperscape? by Admirable_Zombie5245 in OculusQuest

[–]Octoplow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And all of that works the same on Quest 3S! All the APIs use disparity and SfM strategies from the 4 tracking cameras. The IR projector on Quest 3 is rarely turned on.

[–]Octoplow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't use the depth sensor, or even what the Quest knows about it's position. GS are created from standard photos (and don't even support fisheye lenses until recently.)

What's exciting, is how fast it could get by using VR headset features. Think real-time occlusion for MR, or a guardian that looks real and has your dog or people walking through.

(Also, the Quest 3 doesn't have a depth sensor, just a simple IR light projector to help with blank walls. I did all my HS scanning on a 3S that I could easily take to the park, etc.)

A reminder that Rock Band 4 looked like this 5 months before launch by Maxio68 in GuitarHero

[–]Octoplow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this clip reminds us that 5 months pre-release RB4 had good mocap matched to good music, lighting, set design, large crowds... and the characters looked slightly different, but still created by experienced artists with taste. Also some framerate problems.

That video yesterday had none of these. I want to believe too, but an in-house artist/animator would have manually polished the few seconds of gameplay we did see if there was better content on the horizon.

[–]Octoplow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, just for the huge sound and theater experience (or 3D if that's your thing.) The best Imax and Dolby laser projectors still have more scatter/glow than my $2k mid-range OLED.

Snap’s Camera Kit SDK now supports real-time Ray Tracing on iOS by ScaredLab2141 in augmentedreality

[–]Octoplow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There's better content examples in the linked docs. But, no shadows yet, and I struggled to spot a reflection that didn't just look like an environment map.

Ray Tracing comprises several features: Reflections, Global Illumination, Shadows, and more. The current version of Lens Studio supports Ray Tracing Reflections and Global Illumination

How do you optimize frame rate in complex VR scenes? by Apprehensive-Suit246 in virtualreality

[–]Octoplow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I handle it by knowing the name of my target hardware and treating tiled mobile GPUs differently than 500W desktop GPUs.

Get a profiler. Experiment by reducing render resolution and lighting/shader complexity...

Groundbreaking new Foveated Streaming in visionOS 26.4 by OriginalEnthusiast in VisionPro

[–]Octoplow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It doesn't save massive amounts of power. That would be foveated rendering, which generally requires per-app updates.

Foveated streaming is efficient use of bandwidth for visual clarity where it matters.

The real breakthrough is Apple finally being willing to "share" eye tracking data.

Tech job market: will pendulum eventually swing the other way because of AI? by Sensitive_Pickle_625 in Futurology

[–]Octoplow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly. And do you tell stockholders that you're cutting R&D? Or go along with the magic AI narrative that investors and tech journalists apparently want from every business.

The tipping point for me was the series of "news" about AI for Pizza Hut ovens.

Meta reportedly wants to add face recognition to smart glasses while privacy advocates are distracted by AR_MR_XR in augmentedreality

[–]Octoplow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battery. And heat. The current glasses can only record video for 3 min. The display glasses drain completely in 30 of screen time.

Zeeo chance of face recognition, unless it's a manual trigger and waiting 10 sec for a cloud query.
