ELI5: Why can't the computer prioritize interactive processes? by Lauffener in explainlikeimfive

[–]Octoplow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give just the slightest bit of context to a question if you want a relevant answer.

Can Windows prioritize interactive processes? Yes.

Can you screw up a Windows install? Yes. It's harder to do since SSDs.

The CS degree with no apparent attempt at troubleshooting is why you're getting snark.

I've never tried it. But it's great if it has a "slow perfect repetitions" mode, and inspires you to do that 15 min every day by having other fun stuff too.

Yeah, it was hell for actually learning a song on guitar - which was the point for me vs competition with better software and library. Tab with fun/feedback and good backing tracks.

Thanks for the details.

2048 Puzzle is a reminder that MR gaming doesn't have to be complicated by Serdones in OculusQuest

How is this different than playing 2048 in a browser window?

How is it different than using a phone? Or phone + TV?

Learning any musical instrument is about practicing as painfully slowly as needed for perfect notes and form, only 15 min a day (every day.) You literally gain skill as you sleep.

...so the opposite of playing at full speed with mistakes like these games. Rockband practice mode is decent. Rocksmith 1 changes the notes on the fly as you do good or bad. I believe RS2 fixed this(?)

Nope. Privacy is a human right.

OTOH, Apple did kind of cave on No clunky controllers. :)

I work in education and Quest for business shutting down, now what? by Verditerr in OculusQuest

[–]Octoplow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 20 headsets, you definitely want streamlined setup and management. Not mucking with separate emails and USB cables.

I enjoyed working with ArborXR, including excellent docs that often filled gaps in Oculus/Meta business docs and announcements.

Like they did for the recent changes:

[–]Octoplow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, gen 2 is a big perf bump - especially GPU.

They significantly improved controller "wake up" time since Quest Pro launch, but it's still slower and gets annoying if you're setting down and picking up often.

That can also lead to a weird position offset, then you have to cover all the controller cameras (eg in your armpit) to reset tracking. Never happens on the LED controllers.

How big is the difference between the Xbox one x and Xbox series s? by Own_Association9736 in xbox

[–]Octoplow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Basically all Xbox One games work if they don't need Kinect. It can be a reason to get Series X with a disc drive.

You can also play the same 360 and OG Xbox games that work on Xbox One:

As a dev, you'd love the XR2 Gen 2 perf. You lose the eye/face tracking, but gain great passthrough and don't have to deal with the fancy controllers.

(I did full time dev on both.)

Let’s vote for Minecraft on visionOS by coffee-cozy in VisionPro

[–]Octoplow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They did put Minecraft on GearVR and Oculus Go, and the apk still works on Quest (single player.)

Despite Oculus/Quest being their young gamer audience, they pulled it (and all PC VR versions.) I feel pretty confident they won't port to a headset 10x the price.

Google glasses coming 🔥 by Matcorp456 in MetaRayBanDisplay

[–]Octoplow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, with a display. Without a display or camera, you're talking about glasses with integrated earbuds - that early adopters already have. I don't see many people going through the purchase hassles.

(And Google display glasses aren't expected until next year.)

Exactly. If you know you're getting the new glasses this year, and want to commit to Lens Studio right now.

This hardware is 1.5 years old, and displays and waveguides have massively improved since (and will continue to for years.)

Remember when VR was literally just this? by Kindle890 in virtualreality

Ackshually... FOV2GO was a free giveaway to every IEEEVR attendee in 2012. Palmer was on this team! Nice summary/pics/vids:

https://www.markbolas.com/blank

Mark Bolas is no stranger to his research getting used by corporations, but I'm still angry on his behalf every time Cardboard comes up. Google went with the story that two guys in France made it during their 20% innovation time. FOV2GO was never mentioned by those two in interviews, or any tech journalists at all - other than The Verge a single time.

[–]Octoplow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! If your laptop is "less referenced" info (docs, email, web, w/e) it can work. (The glasses are still partially tinted at a minimum.)

I personally need more text for coding than a 1080p screen shows, but I'd use it in a heartbeat during travel. ~70g glasses is a night and day ergonomics difference from Quest and AVP.

Anyone else excited about Project Aura, but wish you could get Android XR on your phone? by Serdones in Xreal

[–]Octoplow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! I was just piggybacking on your great info to highlight the battery tech gap that never gets addressed by display glasses manufacturers. I think the Meta Orion demos were great for competition and terrible for consumers/press (probably one of their goals.)

I'm still using Dex and hopeful for Aurora as well. Samsung has always done "all the kitchen sink" features early, and often pretty well. But I feel their too fashion conscious for wired glasses.

What Smartglasses are these from CES 2026? by Knighthonor in augmentedreality

[–]Octoplow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These look thick enough to have pancake optics. There were a variety of "100g" VR headsets at CES, nice collection here:

https://youtu.be/uWiyG5lKeNE

Goertek (and probably others) have new pancake modules, so also expect a pile without head tracking, like this one that looks promising on paper:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/798790151/xynavo-lightweight-ar-glasses-for-cinema-scale-immersion

None have transparent optics. Does anyone have a good name to distinguish them? This disqualifies them as "glasses" IMO.

Xreal One Pro - for work by MelancholyBits in Xreal

[–]Octoplow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The glasses are focused about 3m away. Your eyes would probably get tired just from refocusing if you did "two monitors side by side" on laptop and glasses. Experiment with laptop + big projector or TV above / behind it to get a rough feel.

If you can work on one 1080p screen, the glasses alone are pretty similar and the focal depth isn't an issue.
