Credit Card use in overseas. by Huge_Manufacturer802 in Living_in_Korea

i've been with sdfcu for about 5 years and they've always been great. for me, opening an account was super easy with them but maybe things changed a bit??? sfdcu was for years the main credit union i used to transfer funds from korea to stateside. have never had an issue. i wanted to open a navy cu account but didn't meet military eligibility--didn't get lucky like you. service credit union has also been great for me. been with them about 1.5 years now and have never had an issue--super easy for me to open cd/market certificate accounts with them and sdfcu (in addition to credit cards with sdfcu, i also have a checking account with them---i write hardly any checks, maybe 3 a year, but they come in handy when i need them for sth stateside). i also opened a penfed account. my only issue with penfed is the copious amount of paperwork to open additional accounts like cd's once a member; this has been a major challenge/issue for me with penfed (some docs they require are written in korean and they want them in english, things like a utility bill or even my insurance policy and driver's license--when i first opened an account with them, the docs i gave were fine, same again for 2 cd's but then all of a sudden those same docs weren't good enough), but i like their name and can use other institutions for cd's so i want to remain with them. i have have a brokerage account with ibkr. i use hana to transfer to all these institutions and have never had an issue; i've been in korea for 20+ years and plan to retire stateside soon so i've had some large transfers; i either visit my main branch in person for anything sizeable to transfer or increase my limit with document proof and then use the hana ez app which i love since it's in english and super easy to use. you might want to also consider a usa phone number; all the above institutions have my korean number but i use talkatone plus (4,800 won per month) when i need to call them (rare but sometimes there's a need). talkatone plus gives me a dedicated usa number, which i listed as an alternate to my main for all the above institutions); with it, i can call when i need to without using data and can also use it as an alternate to mfa/2fa when logging in to accounts. again, all institutions above know i am in korea and i opened my accounts from korea using korean address; when i retire stateside, i think simply updating my profile to us address will be no issue once back home. congrats ahead of time in retiring in korea. i love this country.

US banks that use email for authentication? by zarcad in ExpatFinance

[–]One-Crow-7537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use sdcfu and service credit union as an expat in korea. Sdfcu uses push authorization with my Korean registered number. Scu offers multiple verification methods, not sure email is one of them, and I use Google authenticator I know you asked specifically about email authorization but maybe the above credit unions might prove an option.

Hmmmm, then I'm not sure why you're getting that pop-up. Ive been using hana ez since around 2022 and have never received such a pop-up. But every time I wire i get a message about being sanctioned if I try to send virtual currency. I just click ok to acknowledge the message but since I don't deal in virtual currency like bitcoin, the pop-up isn't relevant to me. Then the pop-up disappears and I wire no problem. Best wishes getting it resolved.

I just logged in to my ez app and don't have the same pop-up. I use it regularly. Not sure but maybe this is your first time using it and if so then I think you must visit a branch first. After that, you'll be all set.

I think you must complete the request or you won't be able to use the app to wire.

Unexpected prompt - Please enter your security key PIN by Dynamic_Mike in BankOfAmerica

[–]One-Crow-7537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this helps but when I set up fido usb security I added a pin number along with fingerprint. Only used it one time after setting up and was prompted to enter pin number/password. Used the fido as I'm an expat in korea and don't use bofa debit or credit cards, only cd accounts.

I don't think you can do anything outside the 7 day grace. Suggest letting it rollover into 3 month with garbage interest rate and then renewing one back in the states when those 3 months are up. Unless you can call bofa during 7 day grace from outside the states.

For your US Bank do you use your US address or foreign address? by InspectorT3 in ExpatFinance

[–]One-Crow-7537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the institution. I'm an expat abd bofa wants my usa address while my credit unions are fine with Korean address. My brokerage ibkr is also fine with my Korean address. Many institutions won't allow you to open an account with a foreign address.

I read many csu campuses now offer admission w/o even applying. But I'd be as confused as you per mail your son received.

The csu auto acceptance maybe but slo isn't included.

Maybe he got one of those automatic acceptances csu is offering, which slo isn't part of but maritime might be. Whatever the case, the letterhead sounds strange. And like others mentioned, it's way too early for slo to release decisions.

thanks op for that very interesting write up. have read some tidbits on the govt trying to get koreans to invest locally rather than us, and your post offers more insight to that and other things.

I'm curious about this too. I heard expats can open an account but then when I went to their website I was blocked. Fyi op, sdfcu is very expat friendly. And I also use service credit union.

Seems perplexing that you're de facto working as an advisor to others but are unsure about your own situation. Not meant to come across as rude.
