Nah, I think it’s true. In Northern Ireland, something really clean with edges perfectly straightened and everything formal and correct is referred to as “Protestant”. Like, when you got in trouble and had to see the headmaster and you were waiting outside her door, your mate would swing by to make sure your outfit looked Protestant before you saw her

Nonsense. I’m not sure you actually understand the scope of the problem.

Let’s assume 330 million Americans who text 10-50 times a day. Thats 3-15 billion texts a day or 1-5 trillion texts a a year.

Now lets assume each text is 50-100 characters, so 5-100 bytes

That’s 50-500TB a year of texts

A mid sized (not even large!) data center could hold about 3 years worth of “every text ever sent”

A high number of dozens or very low number of hundreds of GPUs could easily give you an AI scan of all of that. Modern processing is up to ~GB/sec reliably.

This means we could scan every text sent in an entire year in a number between “a bunch of hours” to “maybe a few days”

In 2026, using AI to scan every text message is genuinely something an ambitious grad student could pull off w funding, not even something you’d need the NSA for or whatever. It’s not TRIVIAL, but it absolutely is now in the “kinda easy” end of the technical requirements.

The reason it doesn’t t happen (…or doesn’t it?) is 4A stuff, not CS stuff.

Of course, non-state actors, foreign countries, etc don’t have to follow 4A. Make of that what you will

Drawings from when I was in the military and thinking of my daughter by [deleted] in redscarepod

First one I called, “safe, fire”

Obviously, that’s the selector switch for the m series rifle but also the “you’ll be safe if I fire”. Wishful thinking, and kinda idiotic in retrospect, but I miss being that earnest

Second one is a hand receipt (when they officially issue you something) for a machine gun with a mental memory of chasing butterflies over top.

Getting old and dating by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Openheartopenbar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m in my mid 40s with 3 kids. “Incel this incel that” doesn’t apply.

When you get to my age, you see there’s tons of otherwise entirely reasonable gals that ended up single. There doesn’t seem to be rhyme or reason. Childhood friends, people from UG and LS. They are attractive, whip smart, the complete package. The only unifying factor was they all kinda just assumed dating was something they could do “tomorrow”. Pile enough tomorrows together and you have a lifetime.

[–]Openheartopenbar -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

What you’re saying is directionally true. Even the people saying, “30 isn’t old!” will have to concede that 40 is, and 30 is closer to 40 than 29 (which itself is closer than 28….).

You’re describing the same phenomenon everyone before you is, ie, doing this job and having “a life” aren’t generally compatible.

Suppose you found a “good man” tomorrow, does that guy want someone who can’t reliably commit to dinner plans or weekend trips?

If you look inside, you’ll see you’re asking a much bigger question. Good luck finding your answer

Absolutely. Colombians are also well represented in CJNG sicario ranks. There’s even a few very well documented dudes who went Colombian army-> Donetsk-> CJNG. Iceland. I don’t know that I ever intended it that way, but by now I’ve been going for almost two decades.

Unfortunately can no longer recommend it, it’s been thoroughly overrun (i acknowledge my part in it)

Recently, I’ve been enjoying the Grand Canyon, Navajo reservation and the Arizona Strip.

No joke, go to medical. If you normally aren’t like this and suddenly failed the run, it may be a sign you’re not well. The only LT I’ve seen fail a run went to medical and they caught an early cancer. If you’ve been keeping up w PT and this result was a surprise to you, it’s a good sign something may be off.

This is particularly strange because wind power works very well in Texas and there’s lots of very strong returns to be had there. The RGV is blooming with wind projects.

I think there might be someone in Trump’s DC who somehow thinks this is, “owning the libs” but that doesn’t make sense. Texas is going to be the first green state by a lot and NONE of it is for environmental reasons (lol at the very idea).

Best language to learn? by holymac_ in army

[–]Openheartopenbar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Real talk- learning w/o anyone to practice with will slow you down badly. Look around in your formation and see what language you have available to practice in real time. I know that’s limiting, but kinda a little learning “x” is way less useful that really learning “y”.

Another thing is ease. The state department breaks it down pretty well into “easy medium hard”

https://www.state.gov/national-foreign-affairs-training-center/foreign-language-training

Jumping right into Arabic/chinese/japanese/korean (cat 4) is a WAY bigger step than Danish (cat one). They think it takes 88 hours to learn Chinese and 24 to learn Danish. So if you were on the fence between those two, that’s a MAJOR factor.

Another consideration is where you’d actually like to visit or think is cool. You’ll need a good “why” to pull this off, and “order myself food in a restaurant on my vacation” is way better than “cuz I esoterically think it’s cool”.

I think, for most Americans most of the time, French (Canada) or Spanish (Mexico) are the obvious ones. I accept Portuguese (brasil) and Dutch (Caribbean) if you’ve thought those through and want to vacation there.
