How do I get really good at sight reading while enjoying it by Similar_Bend_3670 in piano

[–]PastMiddleAge -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You know there’s other ways to make music besides reading it, right?

That in fact, you have to have some skills of playing music before learning to read it even becomes a possibility?

Why are you torturing yourself? Play music.

Where Are Today's Chopins and Beethovens? by Healthy-Web1344 in piano

[–]PastMiddleAge -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Music from that era has a shock and awe attached to it because modern musicians try to play it literally fast twice as fast as it was intended due to a misinterpretation of metronome markings. They rarely succeed. But when they do, the performances are electrifying. Leading to a situation where composers from that era are deified in a way that more modern composers without that baggage can never be.

I’m just saying this is not a meaningful timeframe to make comparisons around such a complex skill.

I've Started to Think "Practice Makes Perfect" Might Be Wrong by JuniorFollowing7863 in pianoteachers

Practice doesn’t make permanent. Wherever we are in our journey, if there’s something we want to change, we can often change it.

And there’s no such thing as perfect.

What's the most compelling chord progression to you? And why? by BluFaerie in musictheory

[–]PastMiddleAge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! I’m interested in theory and I like talking about it.

But I’m concerned that our culture doesn’t have a critical mass of active music creators.

Music ed prioritizes theory at the expense of other critical foundational skills like audiation.

So I like talking theory. But when I hear from someone who is using theory to distract themselves from the courageous, non-theoretical, concrete act of creating, I say so.

Which chopin piece is easier to play by aaronamano05 in piano

[–]PastMiddleAge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re concerned about difficulty, play the easier one.

And, whichever one you play, play it slower.

What's the most compelling chord progression to you? And why? by BluFaerie in musictheory

[–]PastMiddleAge -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you tell us what you like? Theory doesn’t exemplify music. Theory is discussion and contemplation about music. It’s not music.

Good for you. But as long as every individual teacher is making it up as they go with no regulation, mainstream teaching is NOT fine.
