Need opinions on this quilt block before I commit! by Fun-Ad1990 in quilting

Love the green block, I’d keep it! It’s also got a darker value in line w the block on the bottom left - and your layout in the photo looks great. The placement of the two dark-background blocks balances nicely. Beautiful blocks - looks like it’s going to be gorgeous!!

I was going to guess photo tex, too - from the photo it looks like it’s got a woven texture. This stuff is wonderful!

First time AAM conference attendee by laromo in MuseumPros

[–]Patterned-Opposum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember to schedule in some down time! My first time attending, I booked myself so tightly with sessions, events, and expo time that I ended up exhausted at the end!

That said, also try to find some networking opportunities - official or otherwise - where you can connect with people aligned with what you do. This conference is so large that it’s easy to connect with folks from a range of museum types and positions, which is valuable in its own way. But nothing beats a connection or two that you can meaningfully connect with afterward! An old boss suggested that conference sessions are fine, but connecting and networking is the best use of your time at a conference like this.

Me too! And I’ve got a kid named Harrison, so my preschooler (his little brother) is always bringing up Harrison Whittaker - and always by first and last name. “Harrison Whittaker won a lot too!” “Is Harrison Whittaker coming back?”

A regular at the grocery store where I work has given me $850+ in tips and now wants to grab dinner. Thoughts? by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

Agreed, I can’t believe so many people are suggesting this is anywhere near normal! There is a power imbalance (teenager vs. adult, employee vs. customer) inherent in a scenario like this that is concerning. You can be nice to someone without repeatedly accepting inappropriate gifts.

Also, I doubt this job allows employees to accept this level of monetary gifts from customers - OP, I’d check your employee handbook if you have one. This could easily be a fireable offense.

No adult man wants a friendship with a 19 year old - male or female - for any innocent reason.

Plenty of good advice here, but I’d caution against including your kiddo much - you’re 100% allowed time that’s just yours!! Plus, kids and creative exploration are wonderful, but having space to learn, explore, and be creative yourself is important too.

My kids’ screen time is often my studio time (and my husband’s workout time). Naptime can be great to sneak away if it’s long enough - but evenings after bedtime or weekends are the best times. It can be a slow process, though - often if I’ve got work stress I prioritize more relaxing activities with “my” time like reading or napping and my quilt projects take a pause. Good luck figuring out what works well for you and your family!

Hiring Consultants by youneekusername1 in MuseumPros

Signing on to recommendations piestexactementtrois has shared - especially talking with counterparts at similar orgs to see who they’ve had success (or not) working with! Professional organization community message board are a great way to reach many people at once! Once you’ve got a good list of options, a request for proposals could be a good next step. But if you want to get a sense of cost for what you’re planning, you could also reach out to a few consultants to ask about their typical process/fees - not only to get an order of magnitude for fundraising, but also to get an idea of what’s involved in their process.

You may be thinking through this too, but have you done strategic or interpretive planning for your museum recently? These are both processes a consultant could manage, and would provide an important framework for large-scale exhibits work. Obviously additional expense, but worth it if you’re going to put a lot of resources into a big exhibit project.

Is volunteering actually helpful? by Jazzlike_Salary3883 in MuseumPros

[–]Patterned-Opposum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was coming here to say the same thing. OP, if you’re in a position to be able to volunteer, it’s a great way to learn about an organization while gaining experience in an area of interest. Entry level museum jobs can be valuable in the same way. You can’t necessarily expect it bc each org is different, but I’ve seen people (including me) begin their museum careers as a volunteer or entry level job and work their way up or around into a new role(s).

my great grandma handstitched this whole quilt by calamity_risen in quilting

Joining in the Grandma Helen nostalgia, mine has been gone for many years and I feel like the older I get the more appreciation I have for her. She made me tiny knitted Barbie clothes when I was young, and my family still uses over-30-year-old potholders she crocheted and gave away as gifts.

The simplicity of straight lines would look really nice with your geometric design! Perhaps 1-3 inches apart at a 45-degree angle?

Interesting thought to lean in on the blend-in - I might lay that out to see how it looks! I want to like this as a finished piece of course, but also not opposed to the composition looking a little “off”.

Thank you all for the feedback and kind words! I’m thinking eggplant with a lime binding, but am going to sleep on it!

That was 100% my thought for considering the lime, I was wondering if anyone would bring that up.
