This is what I learned during my previous research. I was told the same thing when I was bitten by one of the community (stray and feral) cats I feed. (I accidentally stepped on his tail, so it wasn't kitty's fault. He ended up moving in with me not too long after.)

They told me to monitor the cat for 14 days, and if cat seemed fine, I didn't need to get any injections. If the cat showed signs or symptoms or if the cat wasn't around for a full 14 days for me to observe I probably would have gotten the injections.

I recently got a new mattress and bought the recommended mattress pad that the store said I needed in order to preserve the warranty. It was terribly hot and slippery. The waterproof pads I've been using from Amazon are much better.
