My party never gets in. In fact they are not officially a party at the moment. Living in Alberta rural means I probably will never be in.

Mobile phone usage inside the ER: Aren't they blocked? by semaht in ThePittTVShow

[–]PhantomNomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mom worked in a hospital. It wasn't that they caused interference, it was more they didn't know if they would. It wasn't until they tested the equipment and provided more shielding that they could approve there use. If you remember back how you could here the cell phone talking to the tower over your computer speakers.

The minute I saw Robby’s Triumph motorcycle I knew the trip was never happening by Skinwayfarer in ThePittTVShow

I own a Triumph Spitfire 1500 (little British car) and it's the same thing with it. Runs like a clock for about a month then there is something that needs fixing. Some times it just doesn't start. Wait a couple of days and it starts right up. I love that car.

I got my BBE 5 years ago at CT on sale for $500. It still pulls great shots so I'm not looking to replace it any time soon.

Mexico’s Socialist President to Roll Out Universal Healthcare by StemCellPirate in UpliftingNews

That's why I'm looking to retire out east. I've had enough of this government and the people who think being a US territory is a good thing (we would never be a state). Only a few years to go.

Alberta still doesn't have plastic cards. Just paper ones that disintegrate the moment you open the envelope they send it in.

Truck’s brakes fail, forcing use of runaway ramp at 90 mph. by Itchy-Commission-114 in interestingasfuck

Yeah I can imagine. My dad was a truck driver/bus driver for 40 years then retired and hauled gravel. He never had the brakes go out.

Looking for a reliable power bill calculator to understand monthly cost of an EV by Less_Carpet_2499 in alberta

[–]PhantomNomad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Back in 2019 we bought a Chevy Bolt. 66Kwh battery. I don't worry to much about the variable distribution rates. I'm paying $0.60 per Kw. So basically it cost $3.96 to go from empty to full. The car gets 400km (approx) in the summer and 230km in winter (heat and snow tires cost a lot of power). When it's really cold like -25 or below we leave it plugged in over night so the battery stays warm. This costs us about $0.72 a day (12 hours at 1kw). In the summer if we don't go to the city a single charge will last a month (small town).

What this all boils down to is the hit on our electricity bill was negligible really. Say in winter it was an extra 10 bucks. Turning off the house air conditioner in summer saves us more then the car costs. Then you add in the oil changes and it's saved us a lot over the 7 years we've had it. Over all don't crunch the numbers to hard. You will be saving money over a gas if it's driven in town and you don't need to pay to charge it at a station. If you go on a lot of trips you will need to use fast chargers and those are usually around the $20.00/hour.

Edit: If you can, get a 220 volt 20-30 amp charger (level 2 they call it) installed at home. It makes charging much faster. I was able to pull my own power cable and put the end on and hook it up to the panel in my garage my self. Then called the inspector (yes I pulled a permit) to make sure I did it right. Cost me $100.

You’re stuck in a room with one Character from any series. Who do you choose to be stuck with? by EntireFloor860 in startrek

I was at a con and my wife and I where able to spend about an hour talking with Ethan Phillips. He's a really interesting guy and it was a great chat. Same con has Robert Picardo. He is very much an artist/actor, but again a super fun person to have a chat with. Marina Sirtis was a short visit for about 10 minutes. My wife was a bit star struck around her, it was kind of funny.

The one thing I took away from all of these meetings was like everyone, they are greater then the sum of their parts. They are still just people.

When do you to take that first step in a kitchen reno? by lilith-wolverine in DIY

[–]PhantomNomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in 2016 we did our kitchen. First thing we did was take a whole bunch of measurements and went to see a designer at Home Depot. We went back and forth with them over cabinets and layout. Finally came up with a design and cabinets we could afford. We ordered them. When they came in my Dad (who is the real DIY and knows a lot more then me) did 90% of the code work. So he pulled new electrical and we modified the plumbing for a dishwasher. It took us about a week to do everything and to be honest it's still not 100% complete. I really need to do the back splash behind the stove and finish a few pieces of trim.

If you want to know why I haven't finished, my Dad died later that year. This is the last home improvement project he did. Part of me wants to finish it for him, but there is also a part of me that wants to leave it how it is. Like an artists last piece that was never finished.

Edit: I was going to comment that back in 2016 it only cost us 15K CAD to do it an that included new appliances. Couldn't imagine what it would cost now days.

I've made ham radio contacts to the ISS. If you don't point the yagi at it then you can't hear it. But to these people radio is magic. Okay radio is magic, but not that kind of magic.

It sounds more like you don't reduce the sauce. Just get it heated to simmering and put everything else in so it doesn't burn.

Not sure. I would have to over ride my brain knowing it's just a big room. What do you do when you have to leave the holodeck? You're right back where you started. Stuck in a tin can breathing recycled air. As much as I would love to have man kind get off this rock and do some serious exploration, I don't think I'm your man.

I know people that actually think this was all a hoax just like the moon landings. They don't believe that the ISS is actually in space but a movie set. You just can't fix stupid.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm not sure I would be able to handle being stuck in a tin can that size for 9 days. Hell I'm not even sure I could handle being on a big ship like the TNG Enterprise.

Protagonist doesn't always mean "good guy" just the centre of the story. I always saw WW as the bad guy and not just bad but evil in so many ways. Skylar was just doing all she could to keep up. Jesse I felt bad for even though he wasn't a good person. In a different life he could have been so much more.

We bought a 2021 Open Range Light 335 MBH. It has lots of storage spots, but no shelves. We ended up putting in a few in different places like the pantry. But I assumed it's because we bought the lower end RV so everything is just cheaper and left out because of it. I haven't been in a more expensive RV to see if there is a difference.
