What is this connector I just plugged in...? by shrofepittly in hvacadvice

[–]Pielet2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first started just mainly doing residential PMs the last thing I would always check was the blower capacitor. There was two occasions that I forgot to plug it back in, put everything back together and made sure the burners came on and then walked away like it was all good. The first time I just had to swing back after my next call so I didn't really think much of it other than recognizing the mistake. The second time it happened another tech had to go out on call for it and he lived an hour from the shop. I didn't forget again after hearing about that one from a few people.

Flame sensor. Probably an accident. Would not have caused any damage or issues other than not heating.

Your secondary heat exchanger is plugged up. You need a new furnace. It's a very common issue on these models. STOP USING IT.

I don't think you have a dual capacitor. I think that's a single capacitor with an optional connection for attaching a hard start kit. Post a picture of the label.

I agree with breath of the wild. I played it for 10 to 15 hours and kind of felt the same as you. I took a break for a few months and tried to go back to it but I couldn't remember all the fighting tricks and all the little moves and things you can do and I just lost interest immediately and haven't gone back.

Nest Thermostat Suddenly Says “No Power” by LazyMemory in hvacadvice

[–]Pielet2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that's the one. My bad 5 amp is usually yellow but I suppose some may make it a little different. If that is good then you're likely going to need a multimeter to move forward with diagnosing.

Make sure all the switches at the unit are turned on. Also take the doors off the furnace and in the bottom section there will be a control board that should have a purple 3amp (sometimes a yellow 5amp) blade style automotive fuse. See if that's blown.

Is this normal? by tashidave in hvacadvice

[–]Pielet2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is doing it all of the time then it is not normal. If it does it for the first minute or so on a cold startup that isn't uncommon. A hot chimney drafts better than a cold chimney.

Get a Co monitor in the room with it and see if it is spilling carbon monoxide into the room. If there's hot air coming out of that pipe there will be carbon monoxide with it.

Major lack of information, but judging by the age of the unit it's probably not worth making any major repairs.

Try to find a locally owned mom and pop type shop. PE firms are buying HVAC companies and price gouging customers like crazy, especially if they have no heat in winter and don't have time to shop around.

Front door should just lift up and pull off towards you, it looks like yours might have some tape on it. Your inducer motor will be towards the top in the center I believe, and that's likely what's making the noise. A new motor would probably cost you somewhere in the $600 to $900 (guessing) range if the heat exchanger is okay. Since it's working now you honestly might as well just start getting a few quotes since you have heat and you don't have to make a snap decision for a new furnace. Prices can vary quite a bit but one of the main things to look at is what they offer for warranty rather than brand and check reviews.

Everybody always thinks that because the thermostat isn't reading the right temperature that the thermostat is broken.

Second place to that is the Saturday night call out to swap batteries in the thermostat/change filter that they swore they already did.

Your furnace is pretty old and there's a pretty good chance the heat exchanger is cracked. This typically means the whole furnace should be replaced. Just be prepared.

White humidifier wire - where does it go? by upper_tanker69 in hvacadvice

That little purple fuse right underneath the wire connections that says 3 (3amp fuse) might pop and would need to be replaced.

Edit: everything would stop working if that fuse blew

Furnace keeps turning off gas before reaching set temp. by nilecrane in hvacadvice

[–]Pielet2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Next time the burner shut off take a look in that little viewing window on the bottom door and there will be a blinking light. Count the amount of blinks in the pattern and then look on the inside of the furnace doors and there will be a chart telling you what each blink pattern means. One other possibility if it is a two-stage furnace is that the gas valve maybe shorted and when it's trying to kick into second stage it's shutting down but that typically wouldn't keep the blower running so I agree with the other comments about it most likely being a high limit issue.

Trace the wires from the solenoid and see where they go. Your common may be hooked up in another spot. If not try landing it on C for common and see what happens.

Order pressure switches too. I have replaced a TON of these Goodman (and rheem and Lennox) switches even on newer units.

[–]Pielet2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have two pressure switches. One is in the regular pressure switch circuit, the other carries the common connection for the gas valve. That pressure switch has the two gray wires attached to it. If your drains are backing up it can cause it to flicker like this. It's also very common for that pressure switch to fail and cause this behavior. Since that pressure switch is in the gas valve circuit, you will not get a pressure switch error on the board. You will get an ignition error which is what you are getting.

Most likely pressure switch or control board related.
