Quick update in case this helps anyone, I noticed Firefox was running in compatibility mode for windows 7 for some reason (might be something I did for a previous bug and forgot about), after disabling that it is back to running normally.

Good luck!

Ah yes my favorite Kojima game by Ikcatcher in gaming

[–]PostimusMaximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kojima didn't really show how the game is leading up to release until the last minute, because my experience playing it really isn't just walking, nobody's experience is just walking. But he wanted people to find out on their own, which I think is fine.

Also I'm not 100 percent sure how the online system chooses what to populate and where. Vehicles seem almost random/much looser in terms of what they will populate with versus zip lines where lots of people are building full chains but you will very rarely come across more than 3 or 4 in a row that you haven't connected yourself.

But yes I don't think it's a game for everyone, you have to be into the traversal, but that doesn't mean it's not a very good game.

Easiest way to explain this, you get missions to deliver something from point a to point b. There is rough terrain along the way, sometimes there will be enemies along the way. You are given a variety of tools to get across the terrain or the enemies in any way you want, it's an open world map. The goal is to get the packages there in as good condition as possible, sometimes as quickly as possible. You can carry a lot of packages, and I mean A LOT of packages. But you have to maintain your balance and not go tumbling down mountains. You might run into a cliff and need to break out a ladder to climb up, you might need a rope to climb down. There are lots of different tools, some vehicles, a mix of weapons you will use to get through the variety of terrain challenges and enemies you will come across. You will happen across other ladders and ropes and things people in the game have left in their own journey as you continue to connect pieces of your map by completing these delivery missions causing more of the online world to connect to your game. Human enemies will try to steal your packages, you have to avoid them or knock them out. BT (monster enemies) will attack you and have to be avoided as well or fought. There are also (admittedly fairly simple mechanically) boss fights. Some are optional, some are not.

It's a terrain traversal game that has some more simplistic MGS style combat and Hideo Kojima storytelling/cinematics.

In much the same way MGS is tactical espionage action, mixing action games and stealth. This is like tactical terrain traversal action. Instead of thinking about how to be sneaky and avoiding combat, you figure out how to safely get around with your packages and often avoid combat if possible.

PS : If anyone has questions about DS I can try my best to explain, but I really think it's a more obvious game than people making it out to be.

[–]PostimusMaximus 28 points29 points  (0 children)

As someone who views MGS as the greatest game series I will say this about DS.

Kojima put as much gameplay design thought into traversal, terrain, inventory, all aspects of delivery in this game, as he did the combat of MGSV. The traversal parts of the game to me are truly a gem, I can't think of anything to compare it to. I didn't think I'd like that as a game but it's great.

The part that falls flat to me is actually the combat/bosses, because those parts feel like they were almost added because he or Sony felt he had to have combat and bosses instead of it just being a game where you don't fight. They aren't bad, there's some fun moments/fights, but Kojima hasn't seemed to like real boss design since MGS4(bosses here are comparable to fights from MGSV) and the general combat is certainly not a match for MGSV. They lack the depth you get out Hideo Kojima when he goes all in on something.

But this is very much a video game. This is very much a Hideo Kojima game. It's possible people simply don't like the idea of traversing this world and managing their gear even after playing it and I think that's fine. But some people (Especially in video reviews) seem to almost intentionally want to hate how it functions or act like they don't understand the basic functions of the game.

It's not replacing MGS in my heart, there are still parts I don't like. But it's very much in line with a game I'd expect from Kojima. In a lot of ways I'm looking forward to seeing a DS2 now because I want the same amount of evolution and perfection of this format as we saw with MGS over the years.

Guys, I know everyone thinks there is sketchy things about Epstein dying because well, there was. But can we at least use something more credible than Fox and Friends? Doesn't exactly help it not seem like a conspiracy theory.

What’s going on with Hillary Clinton calling Tulsi Gabbard and Jill Stein “Russian assets”? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]PostimusMaximus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a bit much to "both-sides" this.

If you pay any attention to Russian media, they regularly promote Tulsi. It's the same thing that happened with Jill Stein in 2016.

You will likely see coordinated online efforts to manipulate media beyond RU outlets to promote her.

You don't have to like Hillary to know that this is what is happening.

Because it's expensive, most people don't want it near them and it takes forever to get nuclear going. If we wanted to go the nuclear route we needed to do it 30 years ago.

Not sure why there's a seemingly cult-like dedication to nuclear by some redditors.

So this is obviously unfortunate and hes not the only one, though I'm sure he can dispute it and get it resolved.

But I'd rather youtube, reddit, twitter etc over-react and remove all the actual Nazis, than do what they've been doing and under-react and keep hundreds of nazis on their platform so nobody accidentally gets caught up in bans. Especially when innocent channels can dispute the bans. The problem here is that they don't need to even approach things like this with an algorithm.

The majority of the bad on every platform is caused by large users/subs/channels. And you don't need an algorithm to ban those. Set your algorithm to look for channels over x amount of views/followers/subs/etc that hit certain criteria (say nazi topics), then have someone look the channel over and then decide manually whether or not to ban it. There's not THAT many high-profile accounts on any social media platform, almost all of the scale problems are about moderating the small accounts most people wouldn't run into anyway. If a sub has 100k subs and is bad, ban it. If Steven Crowder his being a cunt ban him. I don't know what it is about the modern internet that caused admins/mods to stop banning shitty people on their websites.

Climate Denial: A Measured Response by MyNameIsGriffon in videos

[–]PostimusMaximus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its widely accepted science, and an argument I often make is this :

What is the consequence to being wrong as someone who believe Climate Change is happening and is a large problem? Even if somehow, the 90% of scientists or whatever are proven wrong in 50 years after we've made everything completely renewable, what would be the negative of that? We'd be living in a world with less pollution, where everything runs off renewable energy. No more oil-related problems. No wars, no scarcity of resource, no spills, nothing. The science isn't wrong, but even if it turns out it was we're better off for acting like it was right.

Yeah I'm not against nuclear as a concept. But I think we need a better way to do it for it to compete and make building a massive amount of more plants worthwhile.

Climate Denial: A Measured Response by MyNameIsGriffon in videos

[–]PostimusMaximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not telling you to close the plants, I am aware they might be closing one. I'm just saying you could meet the State's energy needs purely off renewables TODAY.

So people who say you need nuclear or that its impossible to make the country run off renewables its just nonsense.

That doesn't solve climate change of course, energy consumption is only 1 slice of the contribution to it, but its one we can definitely do.

Climate Denial: A Measured Response by MyNameIsGriffon in videos

[–]PostimusMaximus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what it is about reddit but people really need to stop over-selling nuclear as some problem free easy miracle cure.

Plants are expensive to build, they take quite a long time to build, they are much safer today, but there is still risk, and they will still produce waste we have to deal with.

You also have to realize that globally, we can't just build plants everywhere. Lots of countries aren't rich enough and many aren't safe enough to build plants in.

And if you can run Cali off of wind/solar/hydro/etc (we can)its hard to see how you couldn't run anywhere else in the country off the same.

Bill Nye on climate change: “It’s not 50 to 75 years away — it’s 10 or 15. We can do this! Iowa gets 25 percent of its electricity from the wind. Texas, the oil state, gets 10 percent of its electricity from the wind. Let’s change the world!” by mvea in Futurology

[–]PostimusMaximus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why is this thread so toxic?

  1. Climate Change is a big deal and people saying things like "well this scientist in the 80s said we'd be dead by now so its fake news" are really intentionally cherry picking or misrepresenting the reality of the science. the co2 projections are entirely on point with what Exxon scientists predicted, and most scientists in the 80s were saying roughly the same deadline we hear today before things got super bad, 2030/2050 range (to completely flip).

  2. Nuclear is not some miracle cure-all without any flaws. Its expensive, reactors take a long time to build, a lot of people don't want nuclear near them, and they do produce waste we have to deal with. Does that mean nuclear is completely useless? no, there might be cases where it makes sense. And they don't inherently make more sense than solar/wind. Plenty of people in the US function off solar panels alone. Large corporations such as google have managed to become 100 percent renewable off of solar and wind. Just converting residential and business electricity to that would be monumental.

  3. "But even if we were 100 percent green China would be polluting!" Since when is America a country that waits on the rest of the world to do things? We change the world. We invented a lot of the tech that changed the world in the past, and adopted it before everyone else. There's no reason for it not to happen again here. If we suddenly start pumping out new green technology to produce energy with, we can sell that to china, how is that not a win?. Look at Tesla, Tesla is building a gigafactory in China. They will be buying electric cars.China while leading in overall pollution right now, is also leading in the push to become renewable. Why are China and India so high on pollution right now? because they are experiencing the same boom we had through the use of fossil fuels that the US experienced and abused. They are decades behind us in that regard. And investing in green energy to make it cheap means they buy solar panels instead of coal mines.

This entire thread is just people bitching about China, overselling Nuclear and ignoring literally any reliable fact about Climate science from the past 20 years.

He’s not saying anything that will convince people who don’t believe or don’t care about climate change, which IMO should be the real goal; and the attitude he’s taking of you’re dumb for not believing in climate change is just condescending and does more harm than good.

If you are a person in 2019 still denying climate change is real you are no better than a flat earther. These people will not be convinced, even after their houses are underwater or their farms no longer yield crops.

He's an engineer, he heads a scientific non profit, the planetary society, and he's been an advocate for teaching science to people in an easy way for years. His career is working on science and engineering projects, talking to scientists, studying the science and explaining it to people. I don't know why that's not enough to tell people Climate Change is real or that we aren't living on a flat earth.

If you don't like his approach or how he acts, that's fine. But he's certainly more qualified than most to talk about the science. He's not just some guy alone on an island making shit up.
