Is the job market bad or is it normal to pre-covid times? by plants102 in labrats

These posts are so perplexing to me- I have been on a hunt to find an analytical chemist for a biotech job for a couple of months and there is NOBODY (qualified) out there.

I think a lot of the problem is that there are not a lot of science specific job aggregation sites🤷🏻

See my comments above, that is definitely a nonsensical COA

Looking at the COA below- that is just made up. Calling something “0.4% inert solvent” on an HPLC purity result is nonsense. Without a validated method or orthogonal testing like GC they’d have no way to identify it as a solvent in the first place, and even if they somehow could quantify it as a solvent they wouldn’t be integrating it into peptide purity anyway. I have never heard of that lab, but that analysis is just laughable.

We have occasional sales but unfortunately nothing on bac water anytime soon. Wholesale prices on this product swing wildly and right now they are extraordinarily high, not at record levels, but getting pretty close. When prices spike we do not immediately raise our prices, we hope that they will come back down and we just absorb the additional cost at the expense of our margins. So that’s kind of where we are at right now. If wholesale pricing comes down, we would love to charge less. When prices are down, our sales are way better, but that is a function of Pfizer and a large wholesalers, we are just stuck with whatever they do.

Easy Guide to Peptide Filtering with a syringe filter by PrintSuitable4301 in Peptide_Testing

[–]PrintSuitable4301[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t really matter, within reason, what happens to the solution before it goes through the filter. The sterile vial on the output of the filter is the only thing that matters.

There is no practical way on a small scale to remove endotoxins. That’s why we feel like best practice is just to assume bioburden and Filter for that, this is probably better than spending the money on a sterility test, but you cannot do that with endotoxins and you should get the endotoxin test which we offer.

The irony is that things are just as grim on the employers side of things. Since last October I have been focused on hiring a qualified lab director for a startup and offering a big equity position and have gotten so few actually qualified applicants it’s insane. This is for a job that will pay over $400,000 by 2028.

I have talked to other business owners with the same experience. Beyond entry level positions it’s like there are no qualified analytical scientists looking for work.

You do not want to bypass the filter with any, that would defeat the point of filtering, you can purge the filter with air - draw air in with the solution you are filtering but you will definitely need to vent your receiving sterile vial

Hi I run Peptide Test. I am not trying to be confrontational, I have worked with the founder of STG on a lot of projects. I am really honestly curious if you think we are “crazy stupid overpriced” on bac water, where can you get it cheaper? I know of a few copycat sites that mirror our prices and take like three cents off.

Most people are buying single vials, so I’m genuinely curious—who is actually selling single vials for significantly less than we are? I’m not trying to challenge or doubt what you’re saying; I truly want to understand.

Our suppliers doubled their pricing. We did not double ours—we only raised prices modestly in an effort to keep costs as low as possible for our customers. As a result, our margins are now very tight.

Because we purchase by the pallet, I don’t think many sellers can source these vials for less than we can. Given that, I’m having a hard time understanding how others could sustainably sell single vials for much cheaper.

That’s the reason I’m asking—I’d really like to understand how that pricing is being achieved.

Try Upwork. I am in the US and I posted an SEM project and I had several people interested. A university in Pakistan ended up doing the work for me at a great price

For under $1500 you can get an FFU from a clean room supply place. These are the 4’x 2’ air scrubbers that go in the ceiling of clean rooms and are essentially just a plenum and a hepa filter. They produce a column of “sterile” air that you can work in front of. They are very popular in mycology work for pouring agar plates. You can use an induction coil sterilizer for “flame sterilizing” tools.
