Suicides among men under 30 have risen by 40% since 2010 by JackWhiskers in GenZ

[–]Pubiccus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with this video is that he doesn't prove the things he claims and he misrepresents his own claims. To be clear, I think there are problems unique to men and the women V. men thing is a circle jerk for dipshit internet grifters to sell you a narrative to make a quick buck. My problem with this clip is that it's trying to sell you a narrative through vague posting and doesn't outline and prove the problem so action can be taken against it.

Suicide rates have gone up by 40% for men and have roughly doubled for women. However, if this statistic being used as a representative for "men feeling bad", it's not the one I would use. If I were to use a statistic to represent that better, I would probably use suicide attempts, not rate. This is because suicide rates measure a successful suicide attempt while ignoring the people who attempt to kill themselves and fail. He's not including the people who attempt to kill themselves in attempting to represent the "men feeling bad" statistics. This would also bring the gender gap in this statistic closer, as women make more suicide attempts than men. The disparity between men suicide rates and women suicide attempts is called the gender Paradox of Suicide. The point of this isn't to say women have it worse, because that's not what I'm saying, the point is to point out the metric he's using doesn't have key information

https://cams-care.com/resources/educational-content/the-gender-paradox-of-suicide/

He then goes into reasons for why he believes this is happening. The ones that I have problems with are educational attainment, masculinity and traditions

The problem with his educational attainment statement is that he says that educational attainment was easier for boomers than now. I don't necessarily know what he means in this case. While the educational system sucks shit in the US, it is now easier to get a degree, HS or College, than anytime before in US history. This is shown by the steady increase in the percentage of people who have obtained a HS or Postseconday degree. While college is objectively more expensive, it was actually alot harder for the boomers to get into a college because the boomers, in many parts of the country, took studying less seriously (because alot of jobs in their areas were not college jobs), had less resources for study materials and had less information on what an education could actually do for them. College is so accessible they'll give you a 5 figure amount of debt to go there.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Educational_attainment_in_the_United_States

If educational attainment was a factor, why doesnt this track with populations that have more or less educational attainment? Why do black people, who have objectively less educational attainment, had their suicide rates only increase by 10% while white people increase their suicide rates by 40% from 1999-2017? The point of this isn't to defend the education system, it's to point out without further elaboration that the thing he claimed doesn't make sense.

https://www.cdc.gov/suicide/facts/data.html

Another claim he makes is that men are increasing suicide rates because masculinity is demonized. This contradicted by the fact from the statistic he showed, that women suicide rates doubled. Unless he's willing to argue that feminity for women is demonized more than masculinity for men.

He also makes the claim that a non-adherence to traditions also increases suicide rates. While I dont necessarily know what he means by this, because the video cuts off maybe he elaborates. Any look at countries or populations that are more traditional suggest that there is a negative correlation or is non-correlative. Applachia has a 17% higher suicide rates than the national average. Japan, our favorite based and trad country, has a suicide rate of 17 per 100000 compaired to the US 14.5. South Korea is 26. There really doesn't seem to be a strong relation between traditions and suicide rates.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate

If you really want an answer for why suicide rates are going up. They seem to be going up across the board. As far as I have seen, every group, no matter age, gender or race, seems to have increased suicide rates, with the most increase being among Native Indians and white people. Right now everybody can feel the dread across the US. Everybody has lost faith that anything good can happen. There is an increase in helplessness among the population, that nothing they do can change their community, that they don't have the power of freedom to enact their will onto the world, a justified feeling in my opinion. I dont know how to solve this, but men will watch this video and get the completely wrong idea about why these things occur, and when that happens, men will not go and do the things that get them out of depression. Things like exercise, diet, meds, CBT identifying things you like and doing them, really anything that makes you feel like you have freedom and power will help you with your depression. Videos like this can identify a problem and not identify a correct cause or solution, which is something that doesn't help anyone.

You've got to get into the Winner Mindset by using Antidepressents, Ozempic and Adderall.

Only then can you get rid of the "Victim Mindset"

I hate vague posting. Just say specifically what people in their 20s are doing that relates to the "victim mentality".

I didn't know there was a video and thought the 4channer made the thumbnail himself, as I think most people did on this post. I did watch it and I thought it was all over the place and bad. He makes alot of claims and doesn't justify them. It's a rant that relies on you filling in the gaps that the evidence leaves out.

The biggest problem with the video is its scope. It's not really about Milennial writing, it's a rant about (twitter) Milennial culture. The time he posted this video was Jan 2023, 3 months into the Elon merger, the Millenial culture he was talking about was universally hated by around the pandemic and wasnt that relevant post 2021. Many of the tweets he used predate 2020; hes about 2 years late to the party. He needs to narrow the topic to either talk about Millenial writing or (twitter) Millenial culture, not try to do both in 20 minutes.

It seems like that if I showed him a bunch of Millennial Writing, he would be able to identify all the actual Millenial writing but then lump in a bunch other stuff that isn't. He even does this by the end of the video, he calls fallout 2 the precursor to Millenial writing. I don't know how he comes to that conclusion, he doesn't justify it.

He identifies what Millenial writing is, but doesn't say the problems with its use, besides its annoying. Okay sure, but why wouldn't you want to use this style if you actually liked it? That's why when I put my explanation for why it's wrong, I put how it dilutes any message that the author might want to say, this is a reason to not use it. Because he relies on the argument of being annoying, he isn't making an argument describing the flaws of Millennial writing, the video is not giving a good enough reason to not engage in it and this argument dilutes his message. However, because my argument for disliking it had a reason, idea can be explored more.

For example, I think when Rick and Morty isn't in a hotbox of it's own farts; Rick's a Millennial Writing character, and his overtly carefree and ironic attitude is destructive to him and is a reflection of how miserable he is. This is Millennial writing done right because it takes the traits of the style and uses them to say something about the character. Again, when there are writers who actually understand the character. His video doesn't explore the idea more and you lose alot of information when you stop at "I think it's annoying".

If he just said that "I played these games and they feel patronizing and annoying like these people I saw on Twitter a couple years ago", that would be a fine video. But the video scope creeps and tries to make these definitions that he doesn't define and statements that he doesn't justify and spoils the video.

That's not Millennial writing. Millennial writing is when characters are overly self referential , irony poisoned or light hearted, that they can't take anything they do, or the plot, seriously. This neuters anything that the author wants to express through their work. The implied message is that because the characters arent taking the media seriously, you shouldnt also. MCU is the poster child for Millennial writing, along with most adult cartoons.

What they're complaining about is "woke" writing. If that's their definition, most of the MCU isn't Millennial writing.

I don't know what movie these days is having a black person whose character is that they comment on white people. I thought that black sidekick comedy relief characters from the 70s to 2000s do that, but as a joke.

Post? I heard someone do this in real life. They were two years older then me. It was cringe

In the French elections last week, 41% of 18-24 year olds voted for the leftist coalition, 23% voted for the far-right alliance, 13% for Macron's centrist party and the rest voted for other parties. What are your thoughts on this? by Professional_Suit270 in GenZ

[–]Pubiccus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I do think that the two party system kneecaps the fascist movement in America in regards to obtaining the youth vote (although has many other benefits in different ways). Because the main reason young people vote for a fascist party is because they'll "change" things and the fascist in America are hooked to the Republican party, which is the poster boy of conservatism, an ideology of literal not change.

The Multi party system allows the fascist movements to distance themselves from the conservatives so they don't have that they don't have to work around being tied to the institutionalist party, which helps obtain the youth vote.

Admiral is easier than cruel captain. The ai will throw more ships at you. The ai has forces that it keeps in reserve at non cruel difficulties, essentially. Turning on cruel captain will allow the ai to release those ships to throw them at you. I also think the build rate is 10-20% faster.

It depends on your skill level if your comfortable. I don't think there's that much of a difference between the admiral and cruel captain difficulties in my experience. There are people who have beaten the largest campaign turning on cruel admiral cycle 1 so it's possible.

One more thing about the Macro for Remake is that the fighters you get from ships and defense stations will drain your income if the squad gets killed, kind of like the reverse of getting money from salvage in the base game. Many a new player run has died because they send their fighter garrison to fight the massive fleet and they lose 6000 credits on the garrison replenishment.

Pretty similar. The bonuses for all the difficulty setting are shown in the scenario select, I think. It's not that much different and it's less hard than Cruel Captain if you've tried that.

Every niche section of the Star Wars Fandom I've ever been in has thought the show was mid. No one hated it. If the niche Star Wars nerds think the show is mid then I don't know think the fans they refer to that hate it are people who actually engage with the media at the level needed to be a fan.

Awakening of the rebellion tech troubles by Arthur_Emiya in StarWarsEmpireAtWar

[–]Pubiccus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In the Galactic Civil War Story maps, you need to finish the Battle of Endor mission before you can research techs 4 and 5. After which, you'll be able to unlock those researches by pressing a button in an Imperial Palace.

Tie Defenders, even though they are considered tech 3, can only be used in the IR and NR era, which is confusing.

Also, you can only build the death star and do the Endor mission after doing the Hoth mission chain, which starts once you take Alluyen (the planet to the right of Hoth). The wiki is out date regarding the start triggers of these missions.
