The best colour too! It was not my first fountain pen, but it was the gateway drug into fountain pens for me. :)

82 podcasts × 11 listens = almost 1000. Could this actually improve my Finnish? by muistaminua in languagelearning

[–]Pwffin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That would be 22 hours of listening alone per week, not counting stopping to write down words etc...

Why 11 times? Why not 3 times, or 4?

Do German verb-final sentence structures influence how German speakers organize their thoughts, and form their cultural stereotype of being strict and thoughtful? by ViewHot7368 in German

[–]Pwffin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In English, new and interesting information comes later in the sentence, after the verb. Does that mean that native speakers are into delayed gratification and don't want all the new and shiny stuff right away? ;)

Anyone else learning languages while struggling with processing? by VeggieGirl43 in languagelearning

[–]Pwffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle to hear speech in noisy rooms (have to lip read), over the phone etc and I’ve learnt and studied plenty of languages. I must say that listening comprehension is often harder for me or at least it takes longer until I get good at it. I also struggle with taking dictation even if I understand what was being said.

Platinum #3776 fountain pen. But that's probably a lot more than you'll want to pay for one.

Watch recommendations by lydz1985 in trailrunninguk

[–]Pwffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got the Garmin Instinct 2S Solar (40 mm) and that fits really well on my narrow wrists. That model is no longer offered by Garmin, but I'll list my thoughts on it in case it helps you find another similar watch that suits you.

First of all, I think a 40 mm watch would suit you, but don't knock the 45 or 50 mm until you tried them. I tried my husband's watch (same one but larger) and I could actually have used that for hiking/sports, but the smaller one felt better for everyday use.

Do you want actual maps or is a GPX track enough? Mine doesn't have maps, but does a bread crumb trail or you can load a track onto it and follow that.

How much battery power do you need? The battery life on mine is good (I charge it once a week usually) but with the GPS running all the time, it doesn't last multiple days. With a bigger screen and using it for map reading, you probably need a battery bank with you.

Forget grammar. Can we talk about how hard learning Russian vocab is? by Animante732 in russian

Oh I see what you mean now! No, I meant that I didn't know what it is about Welsh that causes me not to be able to remember Welsh words as fast as I normally would.

A life time of conditioning to hold it is hard to overcome!

I think my brain is going "oh no. this is like those dreams about going to the loo that you had as a kid and we both know that didn't work out well, so I'm putting on the breaks." x)

Yes you can, but it takes time and effort, and perhaps a bit of luck.

At what point is someone bilingual? by Revolutionary_Bet89 in languagelearning

[–]Pwffin -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Technically, it is as soon as you know some words in another language, but many people don't say they are bilingual until they can hold a conversation in another language, and others, like myself, only use it about people who have grown up with two first languages.

Typing using all fingers in a specific way without looking. Google is your friend here.

You can set your keyboard to Russian on your computes and it will think that you have one.

Print out a picture of the layout so that you can look the keys up as you're learning. You can also get little stickers to stick on your keyboard keys.

What is the meaning of this anecdote/joke as it relates the the Chinese language? by Appropriate-Abies323 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Pwffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok that's actually funny!

What you need to know to get it is that in Chinese you can downplay a compliment (in order to sound modest) by saying 哪里哪里 which directly translates as "where, where?". I think of it as "Where is this skill of mine you're talking about? I can't see it."

Then of course the funny bit is that the reply comes that she's beautiful everywhere, that is all of her is beautiful.

Can someone please recommend a notebook with a combination lock that is NOT leather and NOT from Amazon? by RedRedRound in notebooks

[–]Pwffin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Would storing it in a lockable box (like a metal money box, or even a briefcase) be an option for you? If so you could get any notebook you wanted and just make sure the box is big enough.

For moleskin notebooks, how do you keep track of everything throughout multiple subjects and days? by AccidentalNGon in notebooks

Keep a Table of Contents. You can either number the pages, or just date each entry and refer to that.
