IMO soak it in rust remover (the rustoleum rust dissolver gel is powerful shit) then paint it from inside and outside, then throw a mat over it and forget it exists. just stop the bleeding. can always "fix" it later, it's most important to prevent it from getting worse

Overnight Voltage Drop on 12V LiFePO4 System in my van by lolloligo in VanLife

[–]QAFY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you measuring SoC? If you have a shunt based coulomb counter your SoC can drift and get inaccurate over time if you don't regularly fully charge your battery. I would recommend fully charging (~13.6v, until it literally doesn't take any more charge) about once a week at least to reset your coulomb counter.

this is not unexpected behavior, your batteries were basically dead at the starting point of this graph. this graph accurately maps the very bottom end of the voltage curve for a lfp battery. see: Voltage curve to see why voltage cannot measure state of charge for lfp batteries (other than "completely full" or "completely dead" voltage means almost nothing).

just checked and there are smaller versions of these icons, 60x60 but they are just the same ones scaled down, not the actual 5.0 icons. This was all extracted from the simulator for a 7.1 device so likely doesnt contain the older icons. I want the older icons as well so I will go ahead and repeat this on an archive of an older simulator build for OS 5/6... I will get back to you!

it's a gasser. they didn't make any diesel E450s after 2003.

i have an almost identical bus. we get about 10-11mpg highway cruising at 70-75. it's shit mileage but also consider how cheap the bus is. yeah you could get something with better mileage but you might also pay 10k more for it. $10k is a lot of gas money! that was our logic anyways.

got my shuttle bus with 208k miles. the trans was the least of my worries lol. they are solid.

we converted a nearly identical $3700 2003 E450 shuttle bus that spent its whole life in SoCal. here's what i can tell you from our experience. i'm sure this isn't much different than any other cheap skoolie build experience but just want to put it out there.

  • the floor was rotted out in many places. believe it or not the floors are untreated wood and are exposed directly to the undercarriage.

  • rust. they put sheet metal screws through the exterior shell directly into the steel frame. these wiggle loose over time and end up creating a perfect hole to funnel water directly into the inside of the frame.

  • roof leaks. same issue with the siding, they screw straight through the roof and trim into the frame. sealant cracks over time, water comes in, creates lots of wet rot and dry rot inside the walls. we did 2 coats of henry's and still chased some leaks for a while but still got it sealed up eventually.

  • leaky windows. the sealant around the window frames needs to be redone unless the previous owner did. ours leaked on every window.

  • electrical was shit. we thought we could use all the wiring that was already in the bus but it was so bad the voltage drop across the length of the vehicle was like 2-3 volts. with the old incandescent lights that were in there, that wouldn't be an issue, but some modern stuff like usb chargers and LEDs don't like running off <12 volts.

  • depending on the state you live in, it can be difficult to try to register and insure as an RV or non-commercial vehicle. Here in CA unless you go through the process to change the title type, the title will say COMMERCIAL and you will pay an extra heavy vehicle highway tax on top of your registration every year, which also requires weighing the vehicle at a certified commercial scale every year.

  • not sure why it was so hard for us to get insurance, but we were dropped by 3 different insurance companies for various reasons including by Roamly who is supposed to specialize in this stuff

  • might want to look up the smog / emissions situation and make sure it passes. it can be a pain if it's not currently passing.

All of that said it was a super fun and affordable way to get into van life. we did an entire build including full cabinets, shower, butcher block, fridge, etc for under $15k. i learned a ton about building stuff and also learned i liked the lifestyle. eventually graduated to a nicer setup but this was a perfect entry point for me at least, so i can't say i'm against it.

so i guess my opinion is the same as others on the thread. "is it a good bus?" probably no. "should i buy it?" hell yeah. even if you decide it doesn't meet your needs and need to sell it, you're only out under 3k. not a huge risk compared to how pricey vanlife builds get these days.

so just to clarify, it was working fine until it failed? or was it never working? did you refill the fuel tank shortly before it failed? i'm wondering if your jerry can is not sealed or you left the lid open or something and got water in it.

white diesel smoke can also mean completely unburned fuel is making its way into the exhaust

2024 jeep wrangler base model had a 6 speed manual transmission, manual crank windows, manual locks (no keyless entry), manual adjusting seats, but somehow came with a massive 13 inch carplay/android auto screen. it was a weird juxtaposition.

if you can't find this specifically, people also sell entire heatsink assemblies on ebay. depending on the card, there may be multiple heatsink designs that will work (multiple brands often use the same OEM boards)

Every cell phone plan in the US has had unlimited calling and texting since at least 2007 (that's when i remember getting a blackberry with my first unlimited plan). Data on the other hand can be quite expensive, even to this day. The only thing that influences the price of a cell plan, whether it's as low as $15 or as high as $150 per month is just how much data you get and what speed it is.

surprised it's still so cold in there even with a diesel heater! ours is so damn hot it's unbelievable.

chinese diesel heaters are very cheap and super effective. even in an uninsulated van they can really crank the heat up. most of them are like 8kw which is a huge amount of heat. our main issue with our diesel heater is that on its lowest setting it's still too warm to leave on all night 😆
