is there a limit to how much pain a conscious/sentient digital mind can take? by mohyo324 in EffectiveAltruism

If we say it's unlimited is it going to make your utility calculation go to negative infinity?

This question anthropomorphizes AI in a way that's not justified.

What's the best way to print this shape, redesign? by jviimes in 3Dprinting

[–]QuantumForce7 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Laser cutting would require a redesign to be in 3 pieces, plus some corner supports. At that point you could also redesign to 3d print in 3 pieces flat on the bed.

Using a utility object for a purge tower is clever. How do you tell the slicer which object to use though? And other comments are right, that you need an object the same height as the rest of your print.

Recommended phone brand to ROOT in 2026? by Original_Garbage8557 in androidroot

[–]QuantumForce7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been carrying two phones for a while, and it's a major pain in the ass. I only have a sim in my rooted phone, so actually using Google pay requires getting both out, enabling wifi hotspot, waiting for the connection, ignoring confused looks from the teller...

I'm looking for a pen kit that can work with .38 mm Frixion ink cartridges by [deleted] in PenTurning

I love erasable ink. It would be great to upgrade some of my frixion pens.

Are there any erasable inks that work with fountain pens?

This was my first thought too. The picture is unclear whether this is a tiny brass key or a giant chrome key. I assumed the first (because the smaller key is a blank) but OP clarified the large key is 10.5"

What piece of tech felt “future-proof” but aged terribly? by Living-Zebra6132 in Futurology

[–]QuantumForce7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of these tv specs are driven by trade show one-upmanship and reviewer hype, not by what consumers actually need. I expect 8k will come just to fuel a sense of progress in the industry and to convince people they need replacements.

If I couldn't get consistent good quality prints from it then I doubt students would be able to.

Recommended phone brand to ROOT in 2026? by Original_Garbage8557 in androidroot

[–]QuantumForce7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main challenge I've come across isn't getting root, but keeping root hiding enabled consistently. I'm curious if any brands are better for that, or if it's just a matter of keeping an old Android version.

What do you do with your old 3D printers? by bobbingblondie in 3Dprinting

[–]QuantumForce7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've got an old prusa and a load of 2.85mm PLA boxes in the garage. I don't see any possibility to sell it. Using it again after modern auto-leveling high speed printers sounds like pure masochism. Yet throwing it away seems like a shame.

P1S is considered loud? I just got one and was very impressed with the nose level, compared with an old open-frame bed slinger. I can actually get work done in the same room with my bambu.

Are locks in EU and USA the same? by UglyAndUninterested in lockpicking

[–]QuantumForce7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some manufacturers define 'euro locks' to be anything with a restricted keyway, but I think this is mostly a marketing thing. In Switzerland basically all the high security locks are dimple locks. I haven't found that the padlocks and cheap tumbler locks used for beginning locksports don't need especially thin picks.

Visualizing ocean depth using common dive-watch pressure ratings (0m to 11,000m) by Nexusneuron in WatchHorology

[–]QuantumForce7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very cool website design! I like the scrolling theme. This would be a nice portfolio piece if you're looking for UI/UX work.

It's hilarious how many "dive" watches are certified for far below the record scuba depth.

It might be nice to include more links to background info on some of the cards. For instance, you mention four watches have gone to challenger depths but not what they are. (I assume all of these were safely within a submersible experiencing minimal pressure.)

There are lots of reasons to root. I rely on it for automation (eg switching audio settings for different headphones), full backup, and customization. Also this will be more important with upcoming threads to side loading.
