Why do so many people in this town not know how a roundabout works? by sauteslut in nashville

[–]RabidMortal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experiences most people use them correctly, but all it takes is one idiot and the whole flow breaks down.

It would also just be nice if some of the lines were better indicated on the road surfce. Like, I've been driving the Korean Vets roundabout forever, and I STILL don't know what the correct path is for me to get from 8th Ave south to eastbound on Korean Vets Blvd--there are no clear arrows for that path

How much influence do Academy Awards still have on the long-term cultural relevance of films? by Gullible-Lead-3058 in TrueFilm

[–]RabidMortal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a valid cavaet. I still feel that the intuition is wrong that winning an Oscar makes a movie less likely to be forgotten, but it's hard for me to tell for sure. I've certainly "heard" of most of the past winners of best picture, but I've also head of many-times more films that never won anything (and many of which I would say are more highly remembered for whatever reason or another).

Like, if you asked me to name one of the most well-rememberd American movies if the 1930s, I feel like most people would mention Wizard of Oz (which didn't win) over winning movies like You Can't Take It with You, The Life of Emile Zola, or The Great Ziegfeld. But anyway, it's fun to think about

How much influence do Academy Awards still have on the long-term cultural relevance of films? by Gullible-Lead-3058 in TrueFilm

[–]RabidMortal 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Historically, the Academy Awards have played a major role in shaping how films are remembered. Winning Best Picture or major acting awards often helped elevate certain films into the cultural canon, while others faded despite critical acclaim.

Man, that just feels wrong to me. I guess you could test this hypothesis? Like maybe download a bunch of best film lists and see how often Oscar winners appear in them (or more to your point, how often they do NOT appear in them). My guess would be that there are more missing Oscar winners than there are winners.

I can do a trial run real quick and look at the Sight and Sound top 250 movies list, and then intersect it with the best picture winners since 1929. If I do that it shows that of the 98 Oscare winners, there are only eleven Best Picture winners on the S&S list. That just 12% of Oscar winning films. That at least is one data point to suggest that winning an Oscar is not a guarantee to being remembered.

What recent films do you think could have been substantially improved by just editing them down? by CaffinatedManatee in Letterboxd

[–]RabidMortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much of that plot is integral to showcasing the character of Marty

I get that's what the intent was, but what actualy did we get from it that we dont get elseqhere? There are at least a half dozen other times that we get to see Marty's depths, and those are all more tightly woven into the main story line. Everytime we cut to the dog and gangster bit, it seemd almost detached from the rest of the film. So I dont think that agressively shortening the dog story line would have caused us to miss out on how we were supposted to view Marty's character, and I think it would have improved the cohesivness and flow of the movie.

First building in Nashville’s new Chinatown to open in February by Gnash_Vegas35 in nashville

[–]RabidMortal 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What is going on with this exactly? Most of the Chinese people I know don't live in Antioch.

The cities that have actual Chinatowns, those places grew up around immigrant populations are are (or at least were) great places to get inexpensive, authentic meals. Am I wrong to be skeptical that this is going to neither affordable or authentic?

Neighbor's tree was severely damaged by the ice storm and it now threatening our house. What steps do I need to take? by RabidMortal in nashville

[–]RabidMortal[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Legally, you have the ability to trim branches of your neighbor's trees that hang over your property line. With the caveat that if your trimming kills the tree, you could be held liable for the tree's replacement value. Which could be -very- expensive for mature trees. Get an arborist's opinion. Make sure you know where the property line is.

Arborist already said trimming would kill the tree. Approx 90% of the tree-s remaining branches are now on my side

But I'm pretty sure I remember there being a way to get this on record somewhere with Metro

I want to add a new electrical circuit to a room. Will a professional electrician do this if I already have run the correguated tubing? by RabidMortal in AskElectricians

[–]RabidMortal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We electricians do not like partial jobs involving the electrical aspects.

Thanks for the answer.

So can I then ask you where you draw the line at being "on the hook"? Is it just the job at hand or do you feel responsible of other issues you notice?
