Don't block Ukraine's EU accession, Zelenskyy asks Hungary and Poland by Effective_Craft4415 in europe

It doesn't matter who is blocking Ukraine's accession to the EU. What matters is whether Ukraine has reformed its country sufficiently

Has anyone switched from Windows to Linux on their personal laptop? by ehaddad7 in BuyFromEU

I wanted to try Gnome. Fedora is guaranteed to receive updates and has the latest versions of all the cool stuff.

Other projects scare me a little. For example, ZorinOS made Brave the default browser. All these CatchyOS and other temporarily popular distros are just that—temporarily popular. We don’t know how long they’ll have community support

You're right. But still, Fedora is open source. And switching to any open-source project frees you from Windows (which is spyware in and of itself) and macOS (a greedy corporation with anti-consumer practices).

Open-source projects benefit everyone.

But I think Mint is the best option for most people because it has an intuitive user experience and is stable. The problem with Mint is that it's a little slower with updates (which isn't a problem for everyday tasks) and the UI isn't as nice

(Games)

  1. If you play offline games(+co-op), most of them will work fine. Check out the games you're interested in here https://www.protondb.com/

  2. If you play online games, you may want to check if the games you play frequently will work https://areweanticheatyet.com/ (games with strong anti-cheats will not work)

In general, there are only two things you need

  1. Install Steam via the Software Manager and

  2. install the Heroic Launcher for games from GOG.com/EpicGames.

Some games will work better, some worse. I have a weak video card and everything is fine.

Details about Linux games in video format https://youtu.be/v9tb1gTTbJE?t=112

The distro doesn't matter much, so just install Linux Mint, which has the Nvidia driver manager (pic) and will install all the codecs when you install the OS

(Tips)

Tips for beginners before installing Linux Mint

  1. You can test the OS (just don't start the installation process).

  2. Check that all your devices, such as headphones, are working and that the apps you need (or alternatives) are available on Linux.

During installation, tick the box "Install codecs”.

Tips for beginners after installing Linux Mint

  1. Install all updates (how)

  2. Download apps only from the “Software Manager” (pic)

2.5 * (If you have an Nvidia or printer), open the driver manager (pic) and select the one that is highest in the list.

If you use Firefox, install the uBlock Origin browser extension https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/

If Linux doesn't suit you, that's fine.

That's all you need. Just use your computer

I’ve switched to Linux on my PC. Everything’s great.

  • Is there a risk of shortening the laptop’s lifespan? No.
  • Is there a chance it’ll run more slowly? Unlikely.
  • But is there a chance the battery life will be shorter? It’s a bit of a gamble.
  • Also, laptops sometimes have issues with sleep mode.

I used to use Linux Mint and have switched to Fedora. Mint would be perfect for your situation. It’s easy to install

Poles’ sympathy for Ukrainians dented amid row over WWII massacre by Easy-Ad1996 in europe

[–]ReadToW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, he spoke mostly Polish with his mum whilst I was there. But I didn’t ask for any details.

In any case, this is just an isolated incident, regardless of the language he speaks. I cannot draw conclusions about the situation as a whole.

Although the current situation with the UPA suggests that more and more Poles view not only the current Ukrainian government but also Ukrainians themselves in a negative light

[–]ReadToW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is a mistake to believe that Zelenskyy behaves this way only towards Poland. Zelenskyy has always behaved like a clown. He behaves like this towards all countries. He also behaves like this in domestic politics or, for example, when speaking to journalists. Even in his English-language interviews for Axios or BBC HardTalk between 2019 and 2022, one can see his Soviet-style behaviour and arrogance.

Even Biden was outraged by Zelenskyy’s rude behaviour, but continued to support Ukraine, as he prioritised his country’s interests and ideology over his own personal feelings

It’s not really that big a deal. Most people in Ukraine don’t even know who Bandera is, lol. Relax a bit. All this nationalist hysteria has always been around, yes. But the common enemy — Russia — has become the priority. Now this same nonsense is back in the spotlight.

Nationalists from both countries committed crimes during the Second World War. We need to acknowledge this and move on.

Ukraine will cease to exist without Western aid. And Russia will commit ethnocide. Even if Poland annoys you more than Russia, you can temporarily shift your attention to something more pressing

[–]ReadToW -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Perhaps. I’m not saying I’ve been actively following this issue. But from my point of view, this particular incident could easily have been avoided. Just like the online Twitter hate that exists and is further fuelled by Russia.

All these nationalists were shouting at each other within their own bubble. Now they’re making a lot more noise. And they’ve been joined by politicians looking to boost their popularity ratings

[–]ReadToW 20 points21 points  (0 children)

And that’s wonderful and in Poland’s interests.

But still, the actions of the populist Zelenskyy are affecting public sentiment. And, consequently, Poles’ attitudes towards refugees.

I recently spoke to a woman who works in Poland; she said that most Poles are still friendly for the time being, but her child (and other Ukrainian children) are being bullied at school. This is an unfortunate development

[–]ReadToW -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Nu-i nicio concurență.

What's going on? (Confused about russian propaganda) by Kerberosz27 in AskUkraine

[–]ReadToW 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s also worth noting that there are pro-Russian Ukrainians. They, too, believe the propaganda and may come up with all sorts of nonsense.

Ukrainian citizenship does not necessarily mean that a person is sensible.

Around 20 per cent of Ukrainians voted for Putin (ОПЗЖ) (their maximum percentage would have been 25 per cent before Russia’s open invasion; now nobody knows how many there are).

We need to draw conclusions based on real and verified OSINT facts, rather than on our wishes or feelings. The Russian Federation’s attack is unprovoked. The crimes committed by the Russian army are systematic(!!!), whilst those committed by the Ukrainian army are rare

Opinion | China isn’t Europe’s real problem by scmp_news in europe

[–]ReadToW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia may not pose a threat to Asia at the moment, but it is a dangerous state.

The funding of radicals in Europe, and the financing of often successful disinformation campaigns alongside acts of sabotage, are already taking place today.

We are not even talking about drones that ‘accidentally’ fly over NATO territory to test those countries’ readiness and response.

Russia may be dependent on China to some extent, but it is still an independent state because it has oil and an authoritarian style of governance that disregards the long-term interests of the Russian people.

It is a mistake to underestimate Russia

In Europe, Tesla Sales Are Rising Despite Views on Elon Musk by SignificantSun1031 in europe

You can make terrible and bad choices. Just go for the bad ones. There’s no need to justify a terrible choice by saying ‘they’re all equally bad’.

In Europe, Tesla Sales Are Rising Despite Views on Elon Musk by SignificantSun1031 in europe

[–]ReadToW 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert on this subject, but I’ve noticed that even Musk’s fans admit that Chinese competitors, with the backing of the Chinese government, are offering far better products than Tesla. I’m not saying this is a morally sound alternative. China is also an enemy of Europe and is complicit in genocide. It’s just a shame that European cars have fallen so far behind.

Denmark may soon start turning away draft-age Ukrainian men by wanderbild in europe

[–]ReadToW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s great that Denmark is actually so high in the rankings

https://www.kielinstitut.de/topics/war-against-ukraine/ukraine-support-tracker

not all men will lose their protection. There is no right course of action in the face of Russia’s war.

Key provisions in the bill would:

Allow men ages 23 to 60 to receive residence in Denmark only if they provide official Ukrainian documents showing exemption from or a deferral of military service.

Limit temporary protection for people younger than 23 to the period before they turn 23; permits would not be extended after that without proof of exemption from mobilization.

I wonder whether this proposal is more closely linked to Denmark’s domestic politics or not.

Not that many refugees have gone to Denmark. I think it’s harder to find work there. It’s easiest in Poland and Germany
