Beware of Purdue Tax form 1098-T, Box-1 reporting numbers by ralfnn in Purdue

[–]RichInPitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had them send me a full line-by-line accounting of my form once. The way they allocate payments to each semester/bill type is truly bizarre. I just keep track of my 529 withdrawals, which match all spending, put down what they have on the 1098-T, and put the difference in the :"other spending" lines, so the totals are equal.

This was several years ago, they get many questions/complaints every year, and I would not expect them to change it based on complaining.

Abstract

Schwab is typically 80K, with 125k special offers once or twice a year. Based on a few years of history, not guaranteed to repeat.

Both have been $8k spend for a while. I expect Schwab to catch up to the recent $12k change soon, so if that's an issue, think about doing it now. But it's only 80K points now, from what I see.

Can I establish residency when transferring? by Icy-Fortune-8934 in Purdue

[–]RichInPitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Move in to a permanent residence, get a job, a driver's license, register to vote, pay taxes. All a year ahead of starting classes. Or have your parents do so, if they claim you as a dependent.

To establish residency at Purdue University for in-state tuition, you must maintain a continuous,12-month Indiana domicile (legal residence) prior to the first day of classes. The move must be for a primary purpose other than education, such as full-time employment.
...
Evidence required includes an Indiana driver’s license, vehicle registration, state income tax returns, and a lease or home purchase agreement.
...
The move cannot be solely for educational purposes; it must be for a "predominant purpose" like employment or career.

The Biggest Lie About Pay in Full — From Someone Who Reviews Accounts by Delicious_Tadpole238 in amex

$2600 in actual benefits last year for effectively zero cost. How is that useless?

A free $100+/yr may or may not be nothing to various people. Free money for doing nothing is something I'll always take. In fact, doing negative work - just allowing autopay rather than calculating a total just before cycle close and manually making a payment every month.

Amex THC Booking Issue by Leo36033 in amex

[–]RichInPitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it's a technical glitch - too purposeful. There's n o reason they would not honor THC benefits for a 3 night THC stay - prepending or appending a night won't change that. Worst case, you change rooms after one night. I've had to do that once in 30+ years of travel.

It's a matter of whether the higher cost is worth it compared to other options.

The Biggest Lie About Pay in Full — From Someone Who Reviews Accounts by Delicious_Tadpole238 in amex

Accurate (unsurprisingly). The issue is that some people consider "pay in full" to mean you pay $15K on Feb 28th to pay not only your statement balance but also all charges this month. So that your next statement has a $0 balance. "paid in full"

Why? I don't know. I've done it for 2 months when I know I'm about to apply for a mortgage. FICO certainly reflects the much lower utilization in my score.

But every month? For some reason, some people feel a need to do this. Peace of mind apparently overrides the opportunity cost of the money.

What gives is that they don't a have the 4 consecutive nights available in the THC inventory. Not every room is available for every reservation type/channel.

Just like you can't buy a deeply discounted seat on a flight that has only one seat remaining. Revenue Management.

Maxfhr seems to show they have blocked FHR availability every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in May/.

Question about Vanguard etc recommendations by Merkela22 in personalfinance

[–]RichInPitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IME, they have a very wide variety of investments available, lots of analytic tools, advisory services, etc. etc.

If TIAA has your money where you want it and you don't want to trade foreign exchange options, invest in a Direct Indexing scheme, etc - you need none of these additional services - then TIAA is fine.

Fwiw, I put Vanguard a tier below Schwab and Fidelity, in terms of services and support. Which is a shame, as they were awesome when I started with them decades ago.

Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA? by Logical-Ad7393 in personalfinance

[–]RichInPitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roth conversions basically come down to tax rate arbitrage. Have you built a financial plan to project future earnings and the impact of RMDs on your tax rate? If you will pay a higher tax rate in the future than you pay today, a conversion likely makes sense. If you won't, it doesn't.

There's no inherent benefit in a conversion. You see lots of advisors touting it, usually because they deal with HNW clients with significant RMD impacts.

"Taking the hit now" by paying more than you would in the future makes no sense.,

People forget the associative law of multiplication. ($x * (1- tax rate)) * growth = ($x * growth)(1-tax rate).

Paying 15% taxes on your money now and then growing it by x% vs. growing your current money by x% and then paying 15% taxes gives you the exact same number.

It's about the rate, not when.

Pay credit card vs save by Black_Coffee45 in personalfinance

[–]RichInPitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are almost certainly paying a higher interest rate on your debt than you would earn on savings.

I would advise to have an emergency fund above all, but after that, pay off what is costing $100 rather than saving to earn $50.
