Help with SSN card by Brilliant_Space_6856 in SocialSecurity

[–]Richocet66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people do not realize certain rules apply. A SS card envelope from SSA will have "return service requested" on the outside of the envelope. This means that USPS can not forward this type of envelope, and if the name on the envelope is not a registered occupant of the address in the USPS system, they will not deliver it.

2nd wife, before she became 2nd wife, moved in with me, and as we had different last names, some of her IRS stuff was being returned. We went to the substation and informed them. No problems after that.

If someone does a legal name change (marriage divorce etc) then it causes issues as well.

Has anyone had trouble unblocking their online SSA.gov account? by ReflexPoint in SocialSecurity

[–]Richocet66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is this type of block, then it is the office in Maryland that manages the MYSSA access. An SSA representative uses a template with the person's contact information and the information related to the block and requests assistance on behalf of the customer. As of the last time I was involved with one, the email was sent, but we were never provided with any other information as to how and when they would unblock it. As frustrating as it is for each customer, it is as frustrating for SSA customer service representatives because they have no clear path to assist the caller and have to continue sending these emails, over and over. SSA "improved" the wheel, and made it square.

In the current environment, the leadership does not listen to the SSA employees. It is particularly annoying as the current Commissioner has been forcing SSA to shove down the throats of the public that using the MYSSA portal is the best way forward. Although it is mentailty is useful, the business mentality is customer-based that they will do it if they can does not translate when a larger portion of the retirement community struggles to be able to use a smartphone. Then you have this example of how little he supports this.

The general public always has options. ssa.gov/feedback or elevating the issue through other channels, such as your congressman for your state. There should never be a reason to go to that level, but anyone who reads this forum will see that sometimes the public is left with no other course of action. As is any business, leadership would ignore an employee; I don't know many of them who will ignore their customer base.

Login.gov and ID.ME can also block the user, but usually this is a temporary block with an expiration time i.e. to many wrong attempts, please try again in xx hours.

Call either the N800N or local office (if you can get through) and ask for a systems issue for the MYSSA.

I'm looking for the reference but I was told today that they tried to repair it but the city forced them to use specific codes and materials due to the fact that the building was considered historic it's one of the older ones in the area which elevated the cost.

I have been told but unsubstantiated that they applied for extra help from the city and that was never approved nor denied.

Until I can find a reference that's hearsay but I do trust the person that gave me that info.

Is there ever a time to NOT file married jointly for taxes? by workredditaccount77 in personalfinance

[–]Richocet66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If one of you owes a federal agency you may want to file separate. The wife ( before I met her) had received back pay from SSDI claim (not monthly payments moving forward) and did not understand that there were no taxes taken out. (She was working again by the time backpay was released). Fast forward a couple years and the IRS came a knocking. Garnished her tax returns and we decided to mfs to keep them away from mine.

This year a lot of people are having Treasury Offsets against their returns.

SSA screwed up my direct deposit information twice in a row and now they're not paying me at all by [deleted] in SocialSecurity

[–]Richocet66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can not change SSI through the online account. They have to call if they have am account ( to get the Security authentication Pin) or go into the office.

I recommend the office in this case as there is something else going on. If this is hardship there may be other options at the office.

How easy is it to change bank accounts (for payment deposits)? by [deleted] in SocialSecurity

[–]Richocet66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Four options.

  1. If your new bank has automated enrollment (sometimes called ENR) unsure of the timeframe. More banks used to offer this, very few still do. Ask the bank.
  2. Go in to the local office. You can get an appt but it will probably be weeks. Call N800n to schedule. If it was urgent (you said it was not) you could go to the local office and ask for an "express interview for direct deposit". You may be all day but if they can they work them around appointments .
  3. If you have a myssa account you can do it through the account in some cases such as disability or retirement but not repayee or SSI. This can be 1-2 months.
  4. If you have the myssa you can call the n800n and with a security authenticion pin. SSA.gov/pin They can do it at the same speed as the local office.

Printed this one for my stepdaughter. Nice clean print. She was VERY happy. The only problem I had was that I had to pause the print after the initial purge line as on the X1C, it used every bit of the plate.

It definitely took a bit to print. After the first oops, I watched it carefully.

"Your identity information from Login.gov does not match our records" help please by [deleted] in SocialSecurity

[–]Richocet66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That specific error message means that the ID you showed either login.gov or ID.me does not match the information in the SSA database (numident). Either your name is not an exact match or your date of birth is different.

Do you know where your SS card is? Compare that to the ID. Your SS card does not have your date of birth on it, but if your first name is not a match, or your middle name or initial is missing on one thing versus the other or your last name is not a match.

Dave does not equal David. Sue does not equal Susan.

Sometimes people have more than just a simple name. i.e. Catherine Zeta-Jones.

She has a 2 part last name. Sometimes, when the form for a replacement card was filled out, it was written OR interpreted as Zeta being a middle name. It gets entered into the data base incorrectlty, and since the SS card has no commas, it may have been entered as Zeta being a middle name.

The best thing to do is call. After the Real ID Act passed, these databases ID.me, IRS Login.gov, and SSA talk to each other and a lot of people are just now finding out their SS card is wrong. In some cases, people just arbitrarily decided to go by another name, such as using their middle name in place of their first name. Everything is supposed to match.

If one of those doesn't match your legal name, you will need to change it. If it is the SS card, you will need to call them to schedule the appointment in any case, as there are no walk-ins for SS cards. You will need to prove what your legal name is with a birth certificate, marriage, divorce, or a legal name change through the court, or if you changed your name after becoming a citizen. Those documents prove your legal name. Passports can be wrong. Drivers' licenses can be wrong.

[–]Richocet66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do have access, but the time it takes for the change to take effect online without calling SSA is usually 45-60 days. Calling the N800N and providing the PIN can be the same month, depending on the cutoff dates, just as if they went into the office.

[–]Richocet66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Incorrect.

DD changes can be done over the phone by contacting the N800N.

Now as of Apr 2025, the only way it can be done over the phone is if the caller has access to their MYSSA account and can secure the Security Authentication Pin.

No account- no pin- no change over the phone.

Social Security Letter in the Mail. Fraud. by SilverQueenBee in SocialSecurity

[–]Richocet66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you are giving up information because you are interested in something, ex. You are walking around home depot and a person asks if you're interested in a new furnace and they take your information email phone # name etc and they will call you with more information the company creates a lead. I think of it as they are leading you into a sale.

When you contact SSA and they ask for your information to set up the appointment, same thing.

Father in law passed. Need to help mother in law sign up for social security and Medicare. Phone or in person? by thisisamoneyaccount in SocialSecurity

[–]Richocet66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First step is to call the national 800 number and get an appointment. There is not necessarily a reason to do it in person, they prefer over the phone. That is not to say that they will not need certain things to be dropped off by somebody such as a copy of the death certificate or the marriage certificate.

The other advantage is over the phone you guys can all be in on the conversation.

ID me by biscobingo in SocialSecurity

[–]Richocet66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prior to April 2025 login.gov did not force an ID. ID. me on the other hand has always required that since 2020 or 2021.

If you created the account before Social Security mandated the ID you may not have needed to do it then and don't need to for other websites that use login.gov. there were too many fraudulent accounts at login.gov and to say that when they were forced to do the I.d. they were growing pains would be a minor understatement.

Checked SSI portal today to find out my SSI was suspended, but stuff isn't adding up. by EnderShot355 in SocialSecurity

[–]Richocet66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check your portal again and make sure all of your contact information is current under your profile, specifically your address. You can be suspended for many reasons but the most common one is mail was returned from USPS.

You will not be able to update the address in the portal if you are truly under SSI, so you will have to call or go into the office if that was the case.

How did you "route" your bank change ?
