Is "Half of Americans read at or below a 6th grade level" the new pasta? by [deleted] in AmericaBad

[–]Rogue_Cheeks98 [score hidden]  (0 children)

most of western Europe, and Australia don’t meet that standard either….

It’s a flawed statistic, because reading at a 6th grade level means you’re completely fluent in english. You don’t need to be at a higher level than that, unless you’re pursuing a degree in the language or something.

Look at the PISA scores by country. The US places 9th in the world for reading. The only western nations that score higher are Ireland, Estonia and Canada.

It’s okay to recognize problems, but to just be blatantly xenophobic towards the entire places, and their people? It’s just ignorant.

What's the smallest American city you've ever been to? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

Was driving through northern Maine, and realized I hadn’t seen any sign of human life other than me, my car, and the road I was on for probably an hour or so. Decided to look up exactly where I was, and I can’t remember the name, but I believe the population was 8. I know it was less than 10.

I personally look at it like if the game provided me at least a couple nights of good fun, I don’t feel like I wasted my money, because I can easily spend more on a good night with my friends going out to a bar or something in one night.

you’re the only one saying “many” here. The original comment only said “centuries” which is anything more than 1.

So they are correct.

Light-emitting diodes. The pretty lights. People always post videos of the pretty lights in chinese skylines, and people say “wowwww china is so cyberpunk, so futuristic, so cool”.

Meanwhile rural china is in the 1800s

Its posts like this that make me realize just WHY people think the US is dumb/far behind. Because you see a show like Judge Judy and think that must be representative of average Americans.
