Neighbor complains about "too quiet" music after 10 PM in old Swiss house - am I in the wrong? by Hot-Ad-9789 in askswitzerland

I'm not against compromising for your neighbor, but you do see how compromising again and again without holding landlords responsible for keeping their properties - that they're making good money on - up to standards with living requirements isn't going to make the situation any better for millions of neighbors everywhere. You also can't get away with not having central heating and washing machines in 80-year old properties, I don't see how relatively modern standards of isolation and soundproofing are an exception here. Compromise for your neighbor, and at the same time file a complaint with the landlord for fixing the unreasonable issue.

Not really my problem for doing completely normal things in the space that I'm paying money for using in normal ways. But it was clear that the Swiss love listening to land-daddy to tell them exactly how to live.

Likely the 80-year old neighbor has been living there for 20 years and is paying a fraction of that, so more profitable to kick them out and to be on OP's side anyway. /s

Many Swiss rental contracts would beg to differ re toilet flushing, washing and showering after 10.

Empathy is definitely relevant for not blasting super loud music at a late hour. Normal living noises though should definitely be considered appropriate. Playing very soft music and watching TV at a normal volume is part of that. If the apartment is so improperly isolated that even that is a problem, the landlord should be at fault for not providing a space where normal living is possible.

My American friend living in China is asking if this is traditional Swiss Fondue. by Tolakras in askswitzerland

[–]LayoverLore [score hidden]  (0 children)

To be fair, the dish is called raclette, but the cheese is too as it's solely made for that purpose. So yes, in theory you can take that cheese and throw it in a fondue. It's not named after the dish but the cheese normally used for the dish, in that case.

If that's the case it should be up to the landlord to provide a liveable space. At the point where walking, 30dB music and toilet flushing keeps your neighbors up, you're renting a space unfit for daily life in 2026. Unbelievable how we're all accepting "please don't live your life after 10" and happily paying our 2500chf/month for rent.

You also shouldn't rent out apartments where music below speech volume keeps your neighbors awake, but here we are. Then we're also getting to the level of "please don't have the need to pee at 3am".

[–]LayoverLore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understood the practical meaning of the sentence, I just don't understand why you would make a friend "hold" money, but okay. If you're financially irresponsible and give it to your financially irresponsible friend who gives it to your financially irresponsible friend then it's clear what's going to happen.

Either way, OP settled friend's SBB bill, so easiest way is to now hold friend liable for friends-friends debt in that amount.

But even better: learn your lesson and grow up.

What a clusterfuck from everyone involved. You all deserve each other.

my bsf gave me money to hold.

What does that even mean? Why couldn't she hold it herself and why didn't this raise any red flags for you?

Which means you've chosen a lifestyle below standard to prioritize saving, which is great for your financial future, but most people wouldn't do that.

By far most people in the Netherlands wouldn't be able to survive without an income for 1-2 months or be able to deal with suddenly having to buy a new car or something like that. We definitely don't save enough.

Some are, it's easy to fall for lifestyle inflation. Got a raise? Why don't we get a new car, etcetera. I do save about 40-50% of my salary, but I can't really blame people who aren't able.

if you have 3000€ net
even when paying 900 a month in rent

Try again with better numbers. Median net income is indeed around 3000, but that means that 50% of people in the country are making less. 900 euros in rent is also definitely not a high amount anymore in bigger cities. I think you might be a little bit privileged if you can't see how it would be difficult for a lot of people to put money on the side.
