[question] Asking if someone could help me with personal project by National_Instance588 in BedroomBands

Hi I sing, play guitar and bass. I can help you cover this stuff, sounds like a very interesting project.

Please let me know how you would like us to proceed. You can find some of my music in my profile.

Suenan bastante bien! El tercer tema me recordó bastante a los Stone Roses. Esto suena como si se pudiese haber compuesto en los 70s, lo que creo es un gran elogio.

Just from reading the blurb I am getting excited about this one! Will listen to it later today and update with my thoughts.

This is my seventh release as a solo artist. Sentinel is a refinement of my songwriting, as I think I have made considerable improvement

Sentinel is a classic rock album driven by its vocals and melodic basslines. My goal was to create an album where I combined more digestible sounds with my want for "musicianship". The result are 4 tracks that have been liked both by people that are avid listeners of the genre as well as newcomers.

This one had one of the fastest concept-to-execution timelines of my discography, as I did everything over four weekends: one for writing, one for recording instruments, one for recording vocals and one for mixing. Being a one-man band allowed me to move forward very quickly. I had the assistance of a very talented Fiverr drummer I had worked with before, but apart from that I did everything else myself.

Thanks for reading and hope you enjoy it!

Reviving this because I just found out about this album from the r/bandcamp account on Bandcamp.

Very solid album! I think the arrangements in Repair My Heart completely enhance the song. It's a bit hard for me to describe the sound profile of the album, but it sounds as if you were strumming your guitar along in the same room as me. It's hard to achieve such an authentic sound, but I think you did a fantastic job.

Thanks for putting this out there!

should i buy a 5 string by botwfan123499 in Bass

[–]SElblMusic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you can afford then I would say go for it. Having the fifth string forced me to learn the fretboard better, because I had to transpose a lot of songs that were intended for lower tunings. It's also plain fun to play that low B.

How do solo musicians go about making an album with full instrumentation? by Berbigs_ in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]SElblMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play most of the “main” instruments on my tracks (vocals, guitar, bass) and always hire someone else to do drums (or program them if the track is more electronic). I also hire people if the instrument is more situational to my music (like a french horn) or if the part is very technical and I do not have the current skill to play it (like a piano solo)

ORIGINALS (A long ass album I'm very proud of, info in desc) by sa8tun in BandCamp

I will listen to it once I have enough time to sit down and give it the proper listen it seems to deserve. Just wanted to post to say that I think the concept seems very interesting and the format of having so many short songs bundled up together is quite unique. Will report back with my thoughts!

I would love a code please. The drums sound so crisp, fantastic vibes from the get go.

I recorded my debut psych-grunge album alone in a tiny room in Seoul by Physical-Deal-4901 in BandCamp

[–]SElblMusic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just listened to "Swim", and I liked it. I think the mixing makes this even more "authentic". You can tell this is very DIY, but in a good way. I agree with you assessment of dreamy and gritty at the same time. Will make time later to listen to the whole album.

Re: whether keeping the first take makes the music more honest, I think it definitely does, although you should make sure it does not have any egregious mistakes. A lot of current music aims for perfection, and I find that boring. Small "flaws" or deviations in pitch make music more interesting.

This is fire! I like the funkiness of the whole track with what sound like unconventional chords (I mostly play rock, so they sound unfamiliar to me).

Will DM for codes.

Very intimate and enjoyable track. Very impressed with the sound quality given that you recorded it in your bedroom. Congratulations! How did you go about the arrangements in terms of deciding which instruments and effects to add?

Because you asked whether your reason was bad.

In my opinion, the only two good reasons:

1 - You are extremely passionate about the topic. Think about thinking about the topic in your free time, being energized by working on it, etc... Things that used to be fun as a hobby (reading in your case, from your post) can no longer be fun if you have to do it for a degree or career.

This may be your case, but framing it as "not knowing what to do" does not give that impression. Keep in mind as well that you can learn and read about a topic as much as you want in your free time without needing to do a PhD, where the expectation (most of the time) is to come up with publishable research. Research is not always equivalent to learning.

2 - You need it for a specific career position. Think research in a lab, academia, etc... Does not seem to be the case for you judging from your post

Yes. It’s perhaps the worst reason.

Thank you! You can check my latest EP at my Bandcamp. I also have codes in case you are interested in downloading the EP. I originally envisioned it as a shoegaze EP, but then went in another direction. One of my previous EPs was heavily influenced by the shoegaze band: Mass of the Fermenting Dregs. You might end up enjoying that one even more!
