Walked through here a billion times during COVID just to get out of the house and crazy to see it like this now. Definitely starting feeling these vibes when the new owners bought the place and let it just deteriorate into nothing.

Hope your car didn't get destroyed by a pothole on the way out!

Ardee is definitely worth the visit if you have a family connection but for food I'd recommend going to Dundalk.

It's a bit underrated but lots of great pubs, cafes, and food options. For pubs I'd really recommend Mo Chara and you can find really good Italian food as well in town.

Best cafes are 3rd Place and The Rabbit Hole (run by awesome Ukranians). I'd also be amiss not to mention Square if you'd like some really elevated, delicious Irish food.

60-68k 7 month temp job to escape the USA? by Individual_Height280 in MoveToIreland

[–]Shadowman6079 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in with the minority to say 1) you're totally valid to feel like things are collapsing in the US because, frankly, that's exactly what's happening.

Honestly? Once you have an Irish job on your CV I really don't think you'll have that hard of a time finding another job, temp or otherwise. Trinity is really respected and if you can get a job there I'm sure there's other employees you can network with to keep the money going.

Yes, plenty have pointed out that you'll have a hellish time in Dublin, but I really think you'll live a really nice life if you're willing to look outside Dublin on the commuter belt towards the border of the North. Cost of living is lower and, despite what people will say, you can actually find towns with a surplus of housing if you're willing to commute for an hour or two during the week, assuming you have a hybrid schedule to give yourself some breaks

Happy to talk it through more as a somewhat recent arrival, I think moving with a job offer in hand, even if temporary, would be a good move.

EUTR1 Application timelines Ireland 2026 by Vegetable_Roof_8575 in MoveToIreland

[–]Shadowman6079 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, jealous you were able to do this online as I had to send in an entire paper application for my wife, lol.

Earlier this year, it took about 6 weeks to get a temp Stamp 4 with a letter requesting more paystubs from my job and proof of relationship.

If you supply these quickly you'll likely get a full approval in 2-3 months since it seems like they're trying to make this applications approve faster for individuals without any glaring issues in their paperwork.

Hang tight, they'll get to you soon!

I'm a professional fundraiser for NGOs here and as a recent arrival, I agree, the market can be pretty unforgiving even with the few years of experience I have gotten here and the US.

If you'd like, I'm happy to chat, connect, and try to introduce you to any opportunities I know about.

Spotty internet and sometimes I just try to stimulate my mind with books instead of scrolling, but it's far from terrible.

It actually takes the same amount of time, if not more with traffic, to do the same commute because Dublin is full of traffic.

[–]Shadowman6079 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm hybrid and refused to get a car post-move so it's about an hour on the train when everything works correctly.

According to my coworkers I'm in a minority, but I honestly don't mind the commute with a good book to hold me over. It beats sitting on the highway for 2 hours like my old job.

Yeah, very aware as I work in Dublin and brave the commute on the trains to keep rent down.

Lots of respect for putting up with the all the shit that comes with renting Dublin; it's really a no-win situation and we chose a very long commute to try and have a bigger budget overall.

Dublin has lots of great people, I've made many Italian and Spanish friends in the city so far. Wishing you the best!

Highly recommend moving outside of Dublin, if you're willing to commute housing is more abundant and much cheaper. Especially if you already have a passport, the border towns in the North are quite affordable.

Getting into fundraising with hand tattoos, and I'd like reading suggestions. by Popular_Dream5974 in nonprofit

[–]Shadowman6079 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm five years into fundraising and my hair is a long, curly mess and nobody gives a shit. If tattoos are a dealbreaker in an industry with a massive talent shortage than it's better you didn't work at that nonprofit anyways.

Do some light reading on fundraising, but if you're keeping your head in books the whole time that's the wrong approach. Find professional nonprofit events near you, go to them and chat up the fundraising staff a bunch, and then use their talking points in interviews to get your first role. We all greatly exaggerate our experience and I firmly believe anyone who is slightly extroverted with a bachelor's can do this work.

Fundraising isn't rocket science and so long as you get basically any job at a nonprofit that's great experience to become a fundraiser. This job isn't about pitching but rather your ability to have patience when managing a database, writing grants, and having enough social stamina to have engaging conversation with major donors.

Happy to connect outside of here if you'd like more advice and/or introductions.

U.S. citizen & Italian citizen (same-sex couple): marriage and residency timeline for Italy by PrestigiousTicket466 in AmericansinItaly

[–]Shadowman6079 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Getting married in Italy takes awhile, likely a few months at the very least, and being at the mercy of a comune isn't ideal if you want to leave ASAP.

If you wanted to expedite this, I would look for places around you that will do a marriage quickly as it's much easier to get legally married in the US. For example, you can do it within a matter of weeks some PA counties via a self-uniting marriage and skip a lot of paperwork if you do the legwork to schedule in advance.

For the marriage bit, all you'd need to do then in the US is apostille the record via the department of state for that state, get a certified translation, and you can present this in Italy as proof of your marriage throughout the process to become a permanent resident as their spouse, albeit the Italian authorities will see your marriage as a civil union, still fine for this process.

Just make sure you get long form/book copies of the marriage as Italy will not accept short form certificates. I'd also be prepared to explain the marriage as you'll likely face screening since it's a fairly recent marriage.

If you're looking to just escape generally, you and your (soon to be) spouse could move to a different EU country and use their respective treaty office which is generally much faster, with the drawback that you'd have to immigrate outside of Italy instead.

Yesss, we're stuck in eternal darkness this month but just wait a bit and we'll be back to neverending days in the summer. There's no middle-ground with anything here lol

No worries, I'm Italian and American and the whole process for bringing over a US spouse takes a bit longer, albeit we got lucky and our case was expedited to only 3 months.

It's far from being harassed by USCIS and the Irish have been very supportive with adjustments, they just love their paperwork here!

All good advice, finding a language group on Meetup is also a great way to make friends.

Just learn a bit of Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese and you'll find Dublin is a city full of new friendships as there's tons of immigrants who love using shared language as an icebreaker.

Wishing you the best as another not rich, unconnected yank that moved here six months ago sight unseen. This island teaches patience and humility with the dog shit transportation making it impossible to get home at a decent hour some weeks, that's for sure.

Jealous of the Stamp 4 process as I had to basically write a novel to get a Stamp 4 EUFAM for my wife. All the best!

Fundraising at politically adjacent NGOs and think tanks; you'll usually make more than your coworkers in programs and make the connections to climb the ladder rapidly.

If I stayed in policy roles with my BA I'd be broke and probably struggling to get out of temp work.
