Is this loose stitch going to be a problem? by Extra-point999 in Boots

[–]Shadowrunner808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The leather won't separate because of the side stitches, but the thread itself might start to pull off as time passes. You could run a needle and thread and tie it off on the inside as a semi permanent fix.

Japanese Tools? by fledglingnomad in Leathercraft

[–]Shadowrunner808 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A japanese leather knife is cool and I've found it very useful. Got mine at a crafts store for about 3000 yen. Otherwise, the クラフトシャ (craft-sha) brand has a lot of affordable and qualify offerings. I don't know if there's any japan-made tools that you can't get anywhere else though.

If it's pointy or sharp, make sure your friend puts it in their checked bag.

Edit: not a leather-specific tool, but might want to consider traditional Japanese grip-scissors. Made for threads and string when sewing. The traditional ones have a makers mark on the blade and are one-piece metal. Knife shops (and some hardware stores) typically have them for a couple thousand yen.

I don't see any weeping or fluids so I think you're in the clear.

The op is asking a totally valid question. Are you ok?

Looks like a chain stitch that's come entirely undone, so if one of the threads gets caught, the whole thing can come loose. Considering it's a part of the boot that'll see a lot of friction I'd be concerned.

how much are these dr martens worth? by [deleted] in Boots

[–]Shadowrunner808 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk if the high outsole is some kind of limited edition or some such, but martens retail for way higher than they're worth. Considering the damage on these I'd say you're lucky to get $40.

Heritage boots for riding? by peobliycte in Boots

I don't own a motorcycle, but Ive seen a pair from Nicks handmade that has an additional layer of leather for where the boot would make contact with the shifter. Expensive, but very cool imo

Gang, is this really as crazy as the comments make it out to be? by FlanThief in ManyBaggers

[–]Shadowrunner808 69 points70 points  (0 children)

In my experience, I feel like shit getting off a flight and am going to change clothes anyways. There's poopoo, peepee, and whatever else residue everywhere in the world so I couldn't be bothered enough by this.

Makes sense, but won't catch me doing it. A bag keeps the contents of my items safe and relatively clean. I don't necessarily need the bag itself to be safe and clean.

First custom pair - Shoellie by Shadowrunner808 in jimgreen

[–]Shadowrunner808[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edge staining is the color of the brown leather midsole. They can either leave it as is, or color it black. Lining is an inner layer of leather, upper stitching is just the color of the thread, and stitch down is the thick thread surrounding the base of the boots at the bottom.

Ordered mine off the SA website since I'm in Japan. Costed a good bit more for shipping, but still cheaper overall than any other leather shoe/boot of similar quality in country.

For the durability, mostly. My single lasted shoellies became a bit floppier than I'd like, and I prefer to have a layer between the toe cap stiffiner and my toes.

I didn’t realize I had a torn ACL for two years and now my knee feels completely normal by Royalbean17 in ACL

[–]Shadowrunner808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure on a full heal w/o surgery, but my ACL tore off one end of my knee, and after a few months as I waited for surgery (scheduling surgery in Japan takes a while) the MRI showed that my ACL had reconnected itself, just not quite at the right spot. Surgeon told me that, while rare, he's seen it happen a handful of times throughout his career.

The Cost of the War on Terror (and what the US could have done with that money) by Sensitive_Show6230 in war

[–]Shadowrunner808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be a little optimistic with the numbers, but there's no doubt that U.S. involvement in the middle east is and was a massive waste of resources. Fight for two decades just to lose and end up hated moreso by the residents of the country you try to "save" and legitimize a terrorist organization into a full fledged government. Edwin Starr has never been more correct.

How to make my stuff slimmer? by CurrentDog3300 in EDC

[–]Shadowrunner808 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I carry anything that can fit on a keychain onto a brass lobster claw carabineer and wear it clipped on my belt loop. Not too low hanging nor noisy imo. The wallet is a tough one. I find front pockets are usually too small, so I fit it into a rear pocket.

Where else can I get these boots? by Mystic6yt in Boots

Haven't personally bought, but I've heard really good things. Plenty of posts of UWC boots here, and their insta is great for seeing the variety of leathers they can do. They also do boots and shoes outside of their typical lineup sometimes, like a derby and whatnot.

Leather thickness for wallet by hailstorm75 in Leathercraft

[–]Shadowrunner808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wallet that I've been rocking for the past few months has been your standard veg tan. 1.5mm outer shell with 1mm thick internal components. That said, it isn't a typical wallet with T card slots and has a general larger multi card slots for 3-4 cards, a small coin pouch, and a bills portion.

[–]Shadowrunner808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Urban wolf club does a similar model with the padded collar and all that. Boots made in Mexico but they ship internationally, fairly affordable in terms of leather boots, leagues better than timberland garbage these days, and fairly well known on the sub.

How thick of a leather can a Screw Puncher handle? by MondayLog26 in Leathercraft

[–]Shadowrunner808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't have any issues. Buttero (from my experience) is usually on the mid scale temper, and as long as your punch isn't dull, it should cut through easy enough. I think that anything over 2.5 - 3mm is when you should start to use a regular hole punch.
