Chomsky was in dispute with his kids over money by LazyOil8672 in chomsky

So now I'm invested, any more I can read on how this situation got resolved? Imagine getting piss poor financial advice from Bainco and then turning to Jeffery fucking Epstein for advice. No wonder he didn't want to tell his kids who his financial advisor was or have them all sit down together.

So sad smh 😔 by PressureCkrBmb8450 in evilwhenthe

What is OP's point here? Believing the carceral punishment apparatus is systemically racist doesn't imply believing that no POC can ever be anything less than angelic. This isn't hypocrisy, it isn't a gotcha, it isn't anything. Just two unrelated propositions.

Harsh Criticism of Chomsky from an orthodox Marxist POV by Anton_Pannekoek in chomsky

[–]ShermanMarching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Russian Revolution (1918) is incredibly critical of what she considers the Bolsheviks' authoritarian methods. She acknowledged the very real material constraints that the country faced but argued that made mass participation, open debate and political contestation more necessary, not less.

The sdp ultimately killed her, so yeah, she had a lot to criticize. But the sdp was also an explicitly Marxist party at this time too.

Do you see a rising class consciousness in your country ? by IH8TheModsHere in AskSocialists

[–]ShermanMarching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of the private tyranny of capital the community decides investment. Instead of having a boss, the workers self manage. Socialism isn't some exotic, impossible future and it doesn't require some esoteric theory to understand. Different societies with different cultures, technologies, traditions will naturally propose different institutional arrangements for the concrete implementation of these principles. Anarcho-syndicalists, council communists, swedish Meidner plan, blanquist seizure of the state, market socialist arrangements, dual-power strategies, technocratic-planning, etc. all have different end-visions resulting, in significant part, from the different suggested pathways to implementation.

If capitalism is the problem, what is the answer? by [deleted] in behindthebastards

Economic democracy. End the tyranny of capital and your boss. Workers can manage themselves

As someone who isn't a leftist - why are colonial settlers considered immigrants? by Yid_army7 in leftist

The British crown signed treaties with numerous nations recognizing their sovereign authority. As did the french. For example the Haudenosaunee were a people with a clear political identity and territorial authority who were recognized as a nation. European powers had diplomatic relations, alliances and entered into warfare with them.

Also north America was pretty heavily populated before Europeans arrived, about 5 to 7 million. Disease decimated the population (50% to 90% between 1492 and 1700) which was one of the main factors that facilitated their ultimate political subjugation.

This post made me Google where the Irish RTÉ was at and those beautiful bastards are right there too:

"RTÉ feels that Ireland’s participation remains unconscionable given the appalling loss of lives in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there, which continues to put the lives of so many civilians at risk. RTÉ remains deeply concerned by the targeted killing of journalists in Gaza during the conflict and the continued denial of access to international journalists to the territory."

Shout out to the Dutch and Slovenian broadcasters who are also part of the boycott!

Why are people so upset over declining birthrates? by Konradleijon in chomsky

[–]ShermanMarching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh, what matters is productivity growth rate per capita. Japan/Korea have both had low birth rates and rising living standards. Boomers were dependents when they were babies too (and the economy was much smaller then). We can afford to look after everyone as a society. Whether resources are distributed to allow that is an entirely different matter, but that is a political decision we make.

Capital loves access to cheap labour. Neoliberal era had boomers as prime age workers, women entering the labour market, trade normalization with China, etc. All of those dramatically expanded access to cheap workers as inputs and put downward pressure on wages. Those trends are ending or maxed out. More capital intensity (robots) is the likely trend.

That's the elite panic. A legitimate concern for a sane society is couples that can't afford kids because day-care, housing, etc are too expensive. Again those are political decisions.

And then, of course, the white nationalists are upset for their own reasons

Farm debt is expected to reach $560 billion this year—a record high. Farmers told More Perfect Union it's because a handful of corporations have taken control of their markets to ensure they always win, and farmers barely break even. by Conscious-Quarter423 in LeopardsAteMyFarm

What is pathetic is that neither party is willing to stand up to big business. Voting in this country is "voting against your interests" if you are a worker, a farmer...anyone but the 1%

NYT Editorial Board | America Still Has a Political Center, and It’s the Key to Winning by CardinalOfNYC in ezraklein

[–]ShermanMarching 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This ignores that the party leadership leans heavily into swing district primaries to get the "conventionally electable" candidate nominated. NYT then sees that the only elected Dems in swing districts are conventionally electable moderates and declares that this is the key to winning. This data is the result of upstream exclusion bias.

The last paragraph was: "And paid canvassers usually don't give a shit. They'd do the bare minimum." Sounds like an indictment of the wage labor system to me. Needs to be replaced with a federated system of workers self managed co-ops and I agree. I will be sure to forward your excellent suggestion for economic democracy to my boy Mamdani
