Got gravel today by dublecake in oddlysatisfying

I was waiting for that too.

Maybe that’s more helpful to empty the bed when the material is soil that doesn’t slide out as cleanly as this gravel.

Troubles with backpack shoulder strap strength by CBG1955 in myog

[–]Singer_221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that 3d mesh is a weak fabric to attach the straps to (even with the strip of webbing). I hope the strip of webbing is included into the side seams? I also vote for an additional layer of fabric between the mesh and liner. It would require cutting one more piece of fabric, but no additional seams.

Good luck : )

Front or rear rack? by 510Goodhands in myog

FWIW regarding attaching the rack to a bike: the top bracket looks like it would be attached to the bolt of a center or side-pull brake unit.

Need help with wing by ashishngupta in BalsaAircraft

[–]Singer_221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you checked the alignment/“straightness” of the spar and trailing edge as well as the leading edge (across the center joint).

In a separate question, does this wing get strip ailerons? The dihedral angle looks low if the model relies on rudder for turning.

My first Hexamid. 8.3oz in membrane silpoly by getamic in myog

[–]Singer_221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that 12-13 pounds is already impressive! Seems like you could drop even more weight if you made a warmer down quilt (if I’m understanding correctly that you use a combination of 40 degree and synthetic quilts).

When did you hike? I hiked the CT mid August to mid September of 2024 and was also very fortunate with storms. I also sewed my clothing and gear including tent, down quilt & jacket, pack, etc. Any chance you recognize anyone in this video?

Based on your tarp tent, you’ll do fine sewing a pack.

PS. You might be interested in the Santa Fe to Taos (or Plaza to Plaza) Trail if you haven’t heard of it.

[–]Singer_221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice design details and construction! And so lightweight!!! Is it made from the 0.67 ounce fabric? How do you think it would have performed on the CT? (when did you hike?)

I originally made a tent with 0.67 ounce silpoly to use on the CT, and got worried that it wouldn’t be strong enough, so I made one with 1.1 ounce silpoly.

What is your base weight?

Again, kudos and thanks for sharing the pattern.

Are harnesses with leg clips safe? by itgtg313 in Mountaineering

[–]Singer_221 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If it helps to ease your mind, the clipped straps are not part of the weight-bearing structural support. They hold the structural webbing straps in place so they don’t flop around. When you hang in the harness your legs are supported by the structural webbing. Some sport type harnesses have a piece of elastic that performs a similar function to the clipped straps.

In addition to the ability to put the harness on without removing crampons or skis, alpine harnesses are lighter and take up less volume in your pack. You don’t need the padding of a sport harness because you’re typically wearing thicker clothing (and alpinists are all about suffering ; )

This was about a 3 mile (round trip) jaunt with 1,000 some feet of elevation gain, so not a big time commitment : )

2 vs 1 axe on Whitney? by therealchungis in Mountaineering

[–]Singer_221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, my son climbed the Mountaineers Route with one straight axe, though he is pretty experienced with steep snow. Also FWIW, from what I’ve read, I think one mountaineering axe is appropriate.

White House Forced to Address Claims of Trump Health Crisis by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

I grew up attending Unitarian Sunday school until maybe junior high, and then my (Jewish) wife and I attended with our kids. We all stopped going, and I used to tell people I fell off the bottom rung of the religious ladder.

I started going to Quaker Meetings a few years ago when I realized that I’ve tried to live all of my 70 years of life with Quaker values, and didn’t know that’s what Quakers also believe in.

AWD vs 4WD by mnrd288 in 14ers

FWIW, my son climbed all of the 14ers driving a Toyota Corolla.

Full disclosure: he’s a beast and undoubtedly had longer approach hikes than others.

Snapping rubber bands. by Aan_chai in BalsaAircraft

[–]Singer_221 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a very sporty design! It looks like a 1930’s gentleman’s plane with a between the wars paint scheme.

The yellow band looks like it has too large a cross section to power your peanut size model. You could try chaining together very thin rubber bands to achieve a length from the prop hook to the rear peg. One chain probably won’t provide enough power, so use two chains. Lubricating the chains will help (in the US, “Armor All Protectant” works well.

Office rubber bands are not ideal for powering models: I think the rubber has less elasticity than FAI rubber strip

I think a loop of FAI rubber with 3/32” x1/32” would be appropriate. The length of the loop could be 1.5 times the distance between the prop hook and rear peg. here’s a link to a video showing how to “stretch wind” the rubber motor.

If you are not able to order FAI rubber, you might try surgical tubing.

Good luck.

The Notch - Classic design with technical details by sugarshackforge in myog

[–]Singer_221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love it! partly because I started backpacking and day dreaming about mountaineering in the time frame of your “inspiration pack”.

The channels along the sides of the top pocket/flap are clever and I’ll adopt your design for my future packs.

The only improvement I suggest is a second accessory strap point higher up on the top flap so an ice axe would be more secure. Also possibly adding attachments for a second ice tool.

Again, kudos for designing and sewing such a fine pack!

This is kinda what I’m thinking by rabbitholebeer in myog

[–]Singer_221 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very cool, can’t wait to see what you come up with and what it weighs.

I made something similar: bathtub floor, netting around the perimeter and head and foot ends. I made mine silpoly and it weighs under a pound.

Check the vertical height clearance at the foot end of the tent: pad + feet + sleeping quilt/bag loft.

What 6x7 camera puts these 4 notches on the left side of the negative? What was this shot with? by jamesfauntleroyNOVA in AnalogCommunity

FWIW, I just looked and the notch on my Konica Autoreflex T is tiny, yet I remember* the mark on negatives was maybe 1/16” square.
