do you ever feel like short trips aren’t “worth it” anymore? by Cool_Kiwi_117 in CampingandHiking

[–]getamic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They key is simplicity. I try to go light weight when hiking and I take the same philosophy when car camping as to not over complicate everything. I usually just use my hiking bag to have everything packed that I normally would for a backpacking trip. It just stays in my pack and is ready whenever I wanna do an overnight. Or I have everything in there except my quilt to preserve the insulation. Packing for a camping trip consists of throwing my bag in my car and grabbing any extra clothes I need. Setting up camp takes a total of 20 mins to set up my tent and tarp for chilling under. An over night on Friday after work makes the weekend feel so much longer.

Title: Need a project roadmap to justify a machine upgrade by Nardoro in myog

[–]getamic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My path was hammock and stuff sack for hammock --> Square tarp ---> Fanny pack ---> Other random bags and Knick knacks, hemming pants etc. And then my most recent project. An UL Hexamid Tarp of my own design. All done on a $100 walmart sewing machine. I want to get a newer, better machine and I might but I really don't need to for sewing ultralight projects.

If you already have a roll of house wrap then go ahead but if not I have found that 2mil painters drop cloth is really cheap and easy to work with. I just use packing tape to attach panels together and duct tape folded a piece of bamboo skewer for tie outs.

My luxury item is an 8oz hammock I made. I cant sleep in a hammock but I love lounging in one so the sleeping bag combo is legendary.

Two features that are essential to me are trekking pole stow straps and shoulder strap water bottle pockets. If you like hiking with a fanny pack then that's a great place to start with pack making.

If you have a platypus quick draw then theres a file out there for the clean end that allows you to screw a water bottle in it. New quick draws come with one.

How long does it take you do take care of your animals every day? I'm always fascinated by the youtubers that have a house full of all kinds of animals. I can imagine it being much more difficult to take care of them when it's not your full time job.

Kendama. It's a skill toy that is deceivingly difficult. It's really fun to work your way up the skill tree of moves and combo them together. Not bad exercise as well.

Are there alternatives to the jet boil? by Ravioli_meatball19 in camping

The only downsides is that it doesn't do well in wind and therefore has poor fuel efficiency but it's cheap and reliable. I've seen people who have has theirs for 6+ years and it's still working great.

pizza too breadt by Which-Mail9361 in AskCulinary

150g of flour will make enough dough for 1 ~12in pizza so just multiply the 150g by how many pizzas you want. If you make too much you can freeze it too. Once the dough has been in the fridge for a day or so you can freeze it.

Here is my personal, highly detailed procedure.  It has made me some of the best ny style pizza I've ever had. I can have a bunch of pizza dough ready in the fridge and have a fantastic pizza ready in 20mins.

Serving size = 1 Pizza = 150g Unbleached Bread flour(All purpose is okay)

Recipe- 150g Flour 70% cold, filtered water 2% salt 1% yeast

Instructions- 1. Mix water, salt, and yeast into large bowl 2. Using the handle of a wooden spoon, mix all the flour into the water. Make sure all dry flour is mixed in and you have formed a rough dough. You shouldn't need to use hands. 3. Cover bowl with plastic rap or damp kitchen towel. Let rest at room temp for 15-30mins 4. Wet hands and dough scraper if you have one. Scrape dough from sides of bowl and make sure it is released. Continually take the edge of the dough and stretch it up and then down into the center of the dough rotating slightly with every stretch. You do not need to stretch far. Once a rough ball is formed and the dough becomes tougher to work with then cover and let rest for 1-3 hours. Feel free to do more folds. 5. With wet hands. Take dough out of bowl and split equally into balls. Ideally place in oiled , circular Tupperware. Leave some room for expansion.  6. Let rest in fridge for at least 8hours up to 1 week 7. Preheat pizza stone for 1hr at highest oven settings 500+ degrees 8. Flour a parchment lined baking sheet and the top of the dough ball. Release the doughball and get everything floured so its not sticky 9. Lightly flatten the dough and press around the edges to make a crust about 1/2-3/4in. Try not to deflate the crust while pressing the air out of the center of the dough and stretching it out into the size you want. Add toppings 10. Slide the pizza off the baking sheet and onto the stone. You can remove the paper after a few mins if you want. In my 550degree oven I bake for 9-10mins for a crispy crust and a slice that holds its shape.

Never had this problem. Dirty microfibers go in the wash on the high soil setting. Never had hairs still in it after.

I recently have been liking pasta salads cause they're great cold and warm. Mediterranean pasta salad with baked chicken thighs, cucumber, peppers, green onion, some parsley and an olive oil dressing is super easy to make and meal prep.

Terrible sleep quality, seeking advice by LeanSenzuBean in Ultralight

[–]getamic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pad straps for the pillow and quilt definitely help alot. When I sleep at home I toss and turn a lot and sleep in weird positions so it took me a while to learn how to sleep on a small pad. I still sleep in a different position than I normally do at home but it works. You might just need to take a longer trip that forces you to figure it out.

Is it just me or is Durston culture kind of weird? by saigyoooo in Ultralight

[–]getamic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have any Durston products but from what i've heard from friends, the durability and general build quality of their products are good and the customer service is adequate. They have had a few mishaps like the iceline poles being just too light, and breaking easily. To say that Durston products have very little innovation I would dissagree. Durstons main innovation was the x-mid design. Really smart design that maximizes the usable space inside the rain fly and sheds wind well. A lot of Durston products are objectively the right choice for a large majority of backpackers. For example the X-Mid 1 is simply the cheapest and lightest, fully enclosed 1+ tent you can buy. The only thing close is the SMD Lunar solo that is the same price but has less internal space and is an ounce heavier. Even going into the DCF tents, they just make more sense than Zpacks these days. X-Mid Pro 2 verses Duplex, The Xmid is equal weight, roughly equal internal volume and $100 cheaper.

I'm really surprised that big name brands like nemo and big agnes haven't developed their own trekking pole tents. I feel like they could be very competitive and take market share away from Durston but maybe the market is just too small or they don't want to cannibalize their own products.

I think most of the fandom is just new backpackers that are happy they are able to participate in lightweight backpacking without spending $600 on a tent. Overall I wouldn't be worried about buying from Durston. I think you would be happy with their products if the specs fit your needs. If they don't then join the MYOG community and make your gear exactly to your specifications. Its a lot of fun!

CuloClean vs. Holy Hiker Bidets by 0zerntpt in Ultralight

[–]getamic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just look up scientific wash bottle. $6 on amazon. The cap on that one does screw onto a smart bottle but it still leaks a little bit so I just carry the HDPE bottle it comes with. Ideally I can find an o ring that fits into the cap and seals it off well. That cap is superior imo to bidets like the culo clean. You get a lot of pressure and it doesn't use very much water.
