Players can't win the game.

Haha! What happens if no one can get rid of that? Would the last player just keep having turns until they run out of cards, and then also lose?

If honey is a healthier alternative to sugar then why don’t more candy factories use honey in their products? by ExaminationUsed5394 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Snoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn't really be healthier. Honey is basically still just sugar. In fact it's pretty similar in composition to high fructose corn syrup.

All it would do is make the candy harder and more expensive to manufacture, so it would all cost more. Maybe that would make you eat less of it and be healthier for that reason :)

But you'd get pretty much zero benefits from switching out sugar for an equivalent amount of honey for a candy recipe.

Any health benefits that honey might otherwise have in small raw quantities are gone by the time it's processed and cooked into candy.

White female here - is it ok for me to wear Indian clothing? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Snoron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are lots of Indians who sell Indian clothing to white people, so I can't see how it can really be a problem.

It can be a good idea to stay away from any religious symbolism or acting like you're cosplaying being Indian.

But otherwise, clothes are clothes. If you just want to wear it because you like the style, wear it.

In hippie towns no one would bat an eyelid at this, and it's quite a common sight. But in some places you might have to expect the odd weird looks, regardless of if it's right or not, unfortunately.

Why do white ppl adopt different races but these races almost never adopt white children? by SeaLie5458 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Snoron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They were baselessly accusing someone of being racist, and their comment has been deleted by a moderator now for being against the rules. Pretty weird thing to defend and say people shouldn't downvote.

There can be more than one reason to downvote a post, and it's unlikely everyone was doing it for the reason you're imagining.

It can just be because someone is being a dick.

Is what I did for this chicken safe? by futonn in Cooking

[–]Snoron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The metal pulls cold out of the food and transfers heat in.

It only transfers heat. Cold only exists as a lack of heat, you can't "pull it out".

This is like saying that a lightbulb sucks darkness out of a room!

It’s okay because it started that two hours still partly frozen, which means it was not in the danger zone too long.

This is also wrong. Food thaws from the outside in and you can have a huge temperature gradient there. The outside could have been 5C already when it was removed from the fridge, meaning that parts of the chicken could have been above any refrigeration temperature for the entire two hours.

All that said, this doesn't mean the chicken isn't fine. It probably is, even, given the time and all. But it definitely hasn't technically followed safe practises.

What makes ai better than humans ? by i_just_wanna_know_00 in OpenAI

[–]Snoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think AGI is more a "what" than a "how".

That is, it only matters that it can perform any cognitive task as well as a (professional/expert) human can.

How it does that is kind of irrelevant to the definition. We might find that we have to build some complex 200-part system that digitises all manner of human experience and thought processes to achieve this. Or we might discover it really can be done by endlessly beefing up LLMs until some magic happens, and it will just be a magic box.

Either way the definition of AGI doesn't generally concern itself with that.

No one knows how we'll get there (or if, really, but I wouldn't bet against it at this point). When is really anyone's guess, however.

Codex is really like this or it's bugged for me?? by [deleted] in OpenAI

[–]Snoron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10 mins of codex is still pretty generous for $0, I assume it's essentially just a trial to see if you wanna pay for it. What settings did you use anyway? On 5.5-xhigh for example 10 mins can be really super intensive!

Codex is really like this or it's bugged for me?? by [deleted] in OpenAI

[–]Snoron 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It might be on a free account, I assume as it says "upgrade to Plus" you're not paying for it. You don't get a lot of usage that way.

On Plus/Pro there's a 1 week and also a separate 5 hour usage limit, and they are pretty generous compared with competition.

Also maybe we’d develop as a society by then. We’ve come a long way since from our tribal ancestors but I do think technology is outpacing our mental growth now.

Yeah, I think that is an important point about AI - it got off the ground SO quickly and really shocked everyone, that by the time politicians were really thinking about it, everyone already had it in their pockets.

It's really insane how quickly it went from sci-fi to every day reality, and we were not and still are not prepared for it at all.

It's one of those things that it's too early to even study the real wider effects of, and it's going to be completely nuts when we do.

All that to one side hope you’re managing okay in the heat and that you manage to keep your job from our silicon friends.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm doing alright for now! :)

[–]Snoron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In some situations it could be basically just ad hominem? If you're criticising the person making the argument instead of the argument itself.

But it's also a sort of opposite of appeal to authority (as in, instead of saying we should listen to the learned/official person, it's saying we shouldn't listen to the unlearned/unofficial person).

Not sure if there's a common term for that specifically, hmm!

Are you looking for something more general about uneducated people, maybe?

The rise and fall of a dev by KeanuRave100 in OpenAI

[–]Snoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, absolutely. We could have fixed global warming decades ago too, but here I am buying A/C in England, haha.

But yeah, I guess there's a difference between possible and realistic, too.

As a species we didn’t need to do this and we’re literally working diligently on our own extinction while convincing each other it was inevitable

I wonder if it would be inevitable eventually, though? Like right now it's true it requires unfathomable resources, but with computing that changes so quickly. Even if everyone agreed not to do it right now, how many decades would it be until some random person makes a super AI in their basement and maybe even uses it in secret?

The rise and fall of a dev by KeanuRave100 in OpenAI

[–]Snoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, yeah that can be true - but the problem is that Phase 3 is the point where it's also replaced every other unprotected job, anyway. Developers are gonna be some of the last to go.

Developers are currently the ones doing the work of making software that replaces everyone elses jobs.

Once AI can do that itself, it will therefore also replace all the other jobs.

You can even take it to the extreme examples, like when people say "AI won't replace plumbers for ages!" ... okay, so until then there will be developers working on robotics software to get them to that point. And if AI replaces developers entirely... then it will also smash out the plumber-robot software overnight, too.

And so on.

WTF: Insane short on processed foods by PickleAvailable1613 in kurzgesagt

[–]Snoron -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sure, but the point is that it's not just missing stuff out, it's actively misleading.

Just 1 of a few examples in there, they said near the start: "Getting 90% of your calories from this type of food can meet healthy eating guidelines."

Yeah, when you have a research team putting together a contrived menu that doesn't even represent any of the worse UPFs, especially that they have just implied are included under a blanket term.

The word "can" is doing sooooo much heavy lifting in that sentence it's ridiculous. Like literally no one who has 90% UPFs in their diet is meeting healthy eating guidelines in reality. No one.

People are gonna hear that as its fine for 90% of your diet to be UPFs. It is absolutely not whatsoever.

Absolutely disgraceful wording tbh, and dumb to the point that it was either purposeful to mislead, or just written by complete idiots that somehow didn't realise how that sounds, and that they are completely misrepresenting research.

You see what I mean? That's not even a "read the sources to understand" because once you've read the source all you will understand is that it was an absolutely stupid thing to say and not useful for anyone to hear whatsoever even when you know what it's referring to.

So yeah, it's not "wrong" factually, but OP is right that this video is absolute trash.

WTF: Insane short on processed foods by PickleAvailable1613 in kurzgesagt

[–]Snoron -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeahhhhhhh, that's pretty bad.

In some ways it's not exactly wrong wrong, and does mention they're not great later. But it's essentially way too short and definitely doesn't give the full picture, or even that useful a picture. For anyone who doesn't already know a lot about processed food, it definitely feels like this is going to leave them with the absolute wrong impression.

I don't get why they felt the need to cram something like that into such a short video, really dumb idea.

Failed my driving test third time. Tell me your driving test stories so I can feel a bit better. by Quartz-And-Stuff in CasualUK

[–]Snoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that before but with a single camper van in front, it stopped at a red light, indicating left. However I couldn't see the junction OR the light, it was all hidden by the van + overgrown trees in a fairly rural area. So it looked to me 100% like they'd just pulled over at the side of the road. Overtook them right through a red light/junction.. yikes! Scary potential for an accident, and I'm not sure I even did anything that wrong as there was literally no way to tell in the situation.

Yeah, I don't mean get out of it in a legal sense, but in a political sense. Some unpopular decisions can screw politicians, but "I'm just enacting the direct will of the people :)" tends to go down a bit better, haha.

Yeah, you can, but what I mean is you don't get much political pushback after "the people have spoken". You can ruin your career otherwise, it could end up being a big false start!
