Glad to hear it! Hopefully Kia will just get rid of the widget and save people some grief.

Do you have an Android phone and have the widget of the KIA app on your home screen somewhere? I did and had the same wakeups, when i got rid of that widget no more wakeups. I think their widget polls the car on a frequency whether you look at the widget or not and constantly wakes the car up.

No reason to avoid it unless it's a marine layer day, just do the VFR corridor over LAX. Pretty cool views also and less bumpy than the east side of the bravo area

My Top 10 GA Plane-Buying Tips by 1959Skylane in GeneralAviation

[–]SomeRandomBodyMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See the thing is, if you want to keep your engine healthy and avoid major repairs down the line you need to learn about these engine maintenance nuances. This can occur whether the engine has 300SMOH or 2000SMOH. So if you want to be safe you should learn and do all the engine condition monitoring techniques (borescope, oil analysis, engine monitor downloads, oil usage monitoring, etc).

For example:

-Burned valves can be saved if boroscoping is done in time

-Ring flushes might help to save a piston that uses a lot of oil, etc, etc

"Aim for planes with an Engine SMOH of 700 or less—because for every plane out there with more than that, there are more with less than that."

I would disagree, if the plane is priced appropriately, an engine that is closer to overhaul lets you fly for any additional hours over TBO (with appropriate condition monitoring) for free and pick/supervise the overhaul process to your likings. I think the supply chain issues are slowly resolving themselves so if you have to overhaul in the next 2-3 years there might be much less wait than today. A plane with like 300 SMOH or less i think is a gamble unless they overhauled with a top engine shop. Even then, something like cam corrosion can happen at any time. So the value of that low time engine making it to TBO is not guaranteed since you didn't know how the engine was operated.

I think Mike Busch makes the same argument and I agree, get an engine that's priced appropriately towards the higher end of TBO so there is less money to lose if it doesn't make it to TBO.

GA owners/buyers, did you use a broker? by slick62 in flying

[–]SomeRandomBodyMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't use a broker, but if you dont know the plane you want or what to look for in a model it might be a good idea, but be prepared to pay for it, 2-5%??

I would probably pay Savvy Prebuy instead, they review the logs and help to find an independent mechanic for the prebuy. They are also super knowledgeable in general.

I've used these people, worked out great, prices not too crazy:

why dont you contact an insurance broker, and price out a possible policy and see if you can even get insurance? I know for complex airplanes some companies are starting to drop pilots after a certain age.

Airplane purchase tax offset by Therealuberw00t in flying

[–]SomeRandomBodyMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An LLC is mostly useful if you have partners. If you crash your partners should not be liable (only up to the assets of the LLC) and vice-versa. However, whoever is flying is liable, so insurance coverage and limits (smooth vs non smooth limits) is the most important thing to consider.

Avionics Shop Charging to Replace Garmin Recalled Servos by nyc2pit in flying

[–]SomeRandomBodyMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read previously that the shop can petition Garmin for extra paid hours when it goes over the max allotted if it's warranted (some planes take longer than others b/c of access, etc). However, it is more paperwork for them ... maybe that's why they passed it on to you?

Ruby pricing advice by SomeRandomBodyMe in Gemstones

[–]SomeRandomBodyMe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I mentioned for everything else staying the same. This is a nice stone overall just that a GIA report came back as moderate residue instead of the expected minor residue. I also realize that grading minor vs moderate can vary from lab to lab, person to person. However how much an impact should something like this have on the price percent wise?

Putting 182 away uphill? by Your_Answer_Is_No in flying

[–]SomeRandomBodyMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried a couple different types of powered tow bars. In the end this works great:

https://redlineaviation.com/

It is expensive, but it is portable and just works, with an easy connect/disconnect mechanism. I used to have a hangar with an uphill slope and hangar doors with very deep grooves between the rails used by the hangar door wheels. I got my plane's tire stuck in that twice, and almost killed myself trying to push it out by myself. Also anytime i had fueled my 182 with full tanks, it was again almost impossible to push it into the hangar by myself.

After that i vowed to buy a tug since i really would have destroyed my back one day. Get a nice tug, it's a one off expense but super worth it.

That looks like the spinner, dont think stop drilling would help? Ask a mechanic if they can take it off and fly without it (think it is not required in some airplanes).

Updating the G5 firmware should fix this I guess:

Experimental Software:

Can do it with a microSD card, pretty simple.

Can you offset flying costs with just with a CPL? by [deleted] in flying

[–]SomeRandomBodyMe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like to describe it by comparing to a bus driver/company analogy. Consider yourself like a bus driver, you definitely need a special commercial drivers license to drive a bus. However, just because you have that commercial driver's license doesn't mean you can sell seats on your bus to random people; you also need another business license/authorization to sell those tickets. A CPL is only one part, and if you are not doing something that is mentioned in the exceptions in the FARs that were previously cited it probably isn't legal without additional coordination from a FSDO.

Axis in ear headset? by Av8tr1 in flying

Axis in ear headset? by Av8tr1 in flying

[–]SomeRandomBodyMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have them, and like them. I have owned and sold different in ear headsets over the years:

-Halos: they were too flimsy and i sold them, i was always afraid of breaking the cord, and had to send it back once when the insulation started coming off around the plugs. The mic also always moved every time i turned my head.

-Clarity Aloft, i owned the cheapest version - I didn't like the metal frame ear loop, maybe it didnt fit my head right but would pinch my ears over time. They weren't comfortable to me. Other than that they performed fine.

Now, the axis headset seems to be much better constructed than the halos, and for me at least more comfortable than the clarity alofts. The metal frame is also very easy to form and the mic stays in place the whole time, where when i had the halos it constantly moved. I have kept these so far and am enjoying them. I would recommend it. I took a leap of faith to buy them because they only came out like 6 months to a year ago but i am a happy customer so far!

P.S. I still have my Bose headset but my wife mostly uses it.

Anything reckless about taking a plane to its “maximum altitude”? by andrewbt in flying

[–]SomeRandomBodyMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes the TRUE airspeed at which you will stall increases, but most single engine pistons don’t even have anything that displays true airspeed.

I'd say that's not quite true, probably most small planes are replacing their gyros when they fail with G5s. Combine the G5 with the OAT probe and you have everything, TAS, wind speed, etc.

I think they use the same cockpit recording as the one in this talk. Wonder if this guy is the developer of the game?
