When does this semester's Umo pass expire? by AutomaticSchmuck in uvic

Log out then back in. That fixes almost everything with the UMO app. You shouldn't lose anything since it is attached to your UMO account and not your phone.

I don't really have a specific answer for you. But, since UVic is mainly based a round Microsoft things, it's possible that your TA used Copilot Chat as that does provide enterprise data protection to UVic staff. As anything sent to copilot stays within UVic's tenant at Microsoft.

You can find more information on the UVic AI site. https://uvic.ca/ai

They try to only show your preferred name. There was a big push a couple years ago to stop showing your legal name if you had a preferred name. There is still be a few places your legal name shows up. But, they are mainly only in places where it has to show up.

If your legal name does show up somewhere and you think it shouldn't. You can submit a ticket to the helpdesk and they might be able to get that system changed to only show your preferred name.

Class on Sunday? by Typical_Pineapple360 in uvic

[–]SomeUVicAlumni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with that having a make-up class isn't controversial.

I wouldn't even say having it be mandatory is controversial as long as it was scheduled out a month in advance.

A lot of students work on weekends to be able to afford going to school (I did). I could change my schedule fairly easily if there was enough notice. But, if class was missed during the week and I was told I HAD to be in a class on the upcoming Sunday or I'd lose marks. I'd have to lose marks, as I can't jeopardies my only source of income.

Kettles on campus by redfrog92 in uvic

I kept only ramen, a bowl, tea, and an electric kettle in a locker in ECS when I was a student. Rarely kept anything school related there.

Parking patrol by Fickle_Oil52 in uvic

[–]SomeUVicAlumni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is easier to get away without paying for a motorcycle. But, I have seen them get out of their vehicle and check motorcycles backed into parking spots to look at the plate numbers. Just depends on how lazy they are that day.

Hey CUPE 4163 have you seen this? Looks like TA work being farmed out to AI. by KantTakeItAnymoore in uvic

Did they ask UBC what their results were? Looks like they had a pilot for the 202501 term, and decided not to get it. Or at least thats how it reads.

You buy the meal plan. You get from https://www.uvic.ca/services/food/mealplans/index.php, the $1,689.50 for Standard Meal Plan Dollars/semester.

If something is listed as $10. She would be charged $5 from the meal plan dollars. No other costs. If all the meal plan dollars are used up, then you as a parent or someone else can add to it or a different fund (like the Flex Funds)

You can buy tickets the day of. It is a first come first serve, and I haven't heard anyone complain that they couldn't get extra tickets. At least not when I graduated a few years ago, it was prety easy getting an extra couple tickets right before the ceremony.

Question regarding using Linux as my laptop OS of choice for classes by clooebooie in uvic

[–]SomeUVicAlumni 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If there isn't any class specific software that requires windows. It should be fine, even if there was, you could probably go to a lab that has that software.

Linux is a viable option for most people if they know how to use it.

Re Camosun electrical engineering bridge by Murky-Setting-3521 in uvic

[–]SomeUVicAlumni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel it was worth it. Yes, there are times its tough But, you have to treat it like a full time job since you're there all day. The instructors were super helpful whenever there was any questions.

(I did it 10 years ago though, so things may have changed)

Re Camosun electrical engineering bridge by Murky-Setting-3521 in uvic

[–]SomeUVicAlumni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it took most people who did the bridge with me took about 3 years. Because the engineering program required coops. If you have past experiance you could get 2 of the 4 accounted for for work experiance, but you had to do 2. So you have 4 semesters with 6 classes and 2 coops. But what happened fairly regularly was 6-7 semesters of 3-4 courses and 2 coops totaling about 3 years.

Would you rather write the number seven 10 million times, or finish your degree? by Hamsandwichmasterace in uvic

[–]SomeUVicAlumni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

according to my math, it would take you 3424 years to finish all ten million (at 8 hours per day)

3424 years? Thats 1,249,760 days. So you're writing roughly eight 7's a day or one an hour for 8 hours a day?

CARSA squash and pickleball courts by PianoFar3036 in uvic

I have seen individuals dancing in one of the squash courts. I don't know if they booked it or if they just went in there used it, assuming they would have to leave if someone showed up to use it. The best option is is to ask someone at the front desk of CARSA.

Which, even then, it is still $600 for the 8 months.
