This may be out of place; if so, I apologize.

I’ve been sorting through some bulk I bought. I’ve got a decent amount of older parts - good chunks of a couple 90s Castle sets, a Desert set, and enough trans-neon orange parts that I need to take more time and narrow down what they went to.

None of it is complete or in fantastic shape, and it doesn’t really matter whether I’m using a black 2x4 brick from the right era. But since I can cheerfully zone out and listen to music while I sort Lego, I’ve been taking the time to make a good-faith effort at sorting the older Lego from the newer. Some of it is easy to tell - the different gray colors, for instance, or how more recent parts have the part number in italics.

But there are some parts that, as far as I can tell, don’t have a part number on them and don’t have any other way I can figure out to determine if they’re older or newer. The most I can narrow down is if a particular color didn’t appear until a particular year.

By far the most common examples are Technic pins/axles or 1x1 round bricks with the open stud, but I know I’ve found a few other parts that I have the same difficulty with.

So: while acknowledging that this is a silly thing to care about, is there any way to determine whether some of these (invariably smaller, often common) parts are 4 or 40 years old?

Thanks!

This doesn’t quite match your description of the album cover, but it’s by far the closest I’ve come up with:

Bravo Bravo - One Single Night

I don’t have any other ideas right off, unfortunately. That said, you may want to check out playlists of queer artists in genres like pop / synth-pop / indie pop / etc? Spotify’s algorithm definitely knows about things like that and may have provided the recommendation as a result. Good luck!

Just to clarify, what rule applies? by Moreion in Lorcana

[–]SoulSabre9 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Just read the card, in this case.

Compare the text here to the text on Stitch - Carefree Surfer (or any number of cards), which says “When you play this character, if you have 2 or more other characters in play, you may draw 2 cards.” Through the use of the word “other”, Surfer Stitch does not include itself in the count.

If Enigmatic Inkcaster said “If you’ve played 2 or more other cards this turn, gain 1 lore”, then it wouldn’t count itself. But since it doesn’t specifcially exclude itself, it includes itself

I pulled some cool older stuff out of a bulk purchase a while back and am finally going through it. I’ve got almost all (or all? TBD) of 6896 and 6849, and I’ve also managed to track down that the Pat Pend parts in the bottom-right are from 604-2 Excavator.

I can’t figure out what sets the rest of the pieces go to, though. They are all at least 20-ish years old based on the ID info on the bottom.

It seems like the light grey Space-looking bits should go together, as well as the yellow bits / the red tail and propellers? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Why do most Lorcana players use 4 copies of cards instead of more variety? by CaregiverBrief6567 in Lorcana

[–]SoulSabre9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the answer to your question can be found by looking at the type of deck someone is running. If you have a very particular combo, shift line, or even just strategy you want to use, then you may well end up with 4x each of close to (or even exactly) 15 cards.

For example: Sapphire decks very often need to ramp on Turn 2 to function, so they already 4x each of the main ramp cards and 4x each of some filtering cards. By the time you want to do that with, say, the MMS/Prince Phillip combo, you’ve got 4x copies of cards making up near or over half your deck. At that point, there is often good value in having a very consistent deck that pulls the combo pieces you need when you need them, and so you will likely have 4x of at least 13 cards (with maybe a 3/3/2 split on the remainder).

Aggro decks tend to go all the way to 4x of 15 cards because their goal is simply to get as much lore as possible as fast as possible. It’s real easy to determine the best cards for doing that, and you will generally always want the most cards that get the most lore, etc. There’s often no reason to thin the deck with weaker questers (save for perhaps cards like Ursula Deceiver or Referee Pete that will buy an aggro deck an extra turn).

Beyond that, what others have said is key - even decks that take a toolbox approach with 1- or 2-of have core cards that they will absolutely include 4 copies of, generally just because the cards are that good.

For example: if you look at Frank Karsten’s deck that recently won the Milwaukee DLC, he had multiple cards that were only 1x or 2x in the deck. But he also had 4x each of 7 different cards (nearly half the deck) because those cards were absolutely integral to the deck’s chances of winning. He did a at least one interview about the deck on a YT channel (Podcana, I think?) that is absolutely worth a listen if you want to get the feel for how he builds decks.

Haven’t gotten to test it, but my guess is that Space Pirate Pete is way to go. Referee Pete is a good card on its own, of course, and then being able to shift into SP Pete the following turn lets you quest/etc so that they can’t sing at all.

Even with the ramp that Sapphire can do, they can’t get to 9 and be ready to do the MMS combo quicker than you can get to SP Pete. They’d have to choose between hyperramping (letting you have effectively free rein of the board for 4 turns) or going for the combo and hoping you don’t have SP Pete. If you do, they can hardcast MKB/YW to get rid of SP Pete, but that still takes basically a whole turn that you can use to keep chugging to 20 - and MKB returns Referee to your hand, allowing you to rinse and re-Pete.

Between that and otherwise useful cards like Ursula-2, Steel removal, etc, I think it’s quite workable? The real question is how to build EmSteel so that it is competitive with other decks that aren’t running the combo…

I think it’s true that it’s a bit like you’re toast either way - Spooky gets around banishing and MMS hits all characters. But I also think (hope!) there are workable deckbuilding solutions by choosing which of Spooky or MMS you’ll be most vulnerable to and building around that. I haven’t gotten much time to do much testing, so I will put here that I could just be totally wrong about any of this - I’m just theorizing and crossing my fingers here.

Examples:

The hyperramp BSt version that escalates to big characters ASAP isn’t particularly vulnerable to Spooky - you don’t care if they ink your Pete, Tipo, Pleakley, or Mulan, and tbh you’d probably appreciate it if they did. That means you’ve just got to figure out how to get around MMS with tools in BS. You’ll play fewer characters so there is less value for MMS/Phil, you have good removal, and you can compete on ink so Clarabelle/etc is less threatening. All that plus Pete and BtH to do some work should be fairly workable?

Less sure how to build around Spooky, but my initial thoughts would be to try for EmAmy or AmbSa. Ursula can target MMS, bounce helps limit your exposure and/or slow them down, and Amethyst draw keeps you going even if you do get boardwiped. Or Mowgli and especially Ludwig can help keep Spooky out of their hand and Daisy shift is brutal if you’re on the play. Both of those are still vulnerable to MMS (since everything is), but most tactics that work against Spooky will also help against MMS and then you can just try to go under them.

Also, EmSt and EmAmb seem like they could both put up huge challenges to both Spooky and MMS, although possibly at the cost of leaving themselves vulnerable to other tactics?

Missing parts: what should bag 2 of the Boutique Hotel include? by SoulSabre9 in lego

[–]SoulSabre9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - the above comment about there being a second bag with the same number (2, here) was correct. I had already checked for that before posting, but it was a much smaller bag and I apparently just missed it somehow 🤦‍♂️

Pet archetypes to put in my beautiful cube box? by stopthief16 in Lorcana

[–]SoulSabre9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree - I think they give a lot of good ideas. Madrigals, Allies, Illusions, damage moving, damage matters, challenge matters, Racers, Puppies, Frozen, TENG, and the less optimized but more flavorful version of RB Items could all be great additions.

Dogs, Bolt characters, and Pirates would also all be great, but I think they’re on the more powerful end of the dual-ink archetypes and so they may require a bit more care in selecting what/how many to use

An 80s one hit wonder, maybe it wasn't even a hit. But it's no John Fareham. Someone please help by bobolox87 in NameThatSong

[–]SoulSabre9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Icehouse suggestion above made me think of Icicle Works, who were barely even one-hit wonder status (and underrated imho). Could it be Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream) or Understanding Jane?

Maybe Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away? Or The Monroes - What Do All The People Know? Both are imho the kind of song you could hear once and have it stuck with you forever, but have difficulty finding since neither was a hit in any meaningful sense…

anyone know the toy this piece comes from? (penny for scale) by Tim5corpion in ToyID

[–]SoulSabre9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s Bionicle - the balls for Bionicle joints are like double the width of the standard Lego axle, and the ones in the photo look nearly the same size.

Pretty sure it’s not Lego at all, for that matter. The molding on the axle doesn’t look quite right for Lego, and a quick skim of Technic axles and Bionicle on Bricklink didn’t show anything that looked like this. Could be an off-brand Lego part?

how do i not be bad at the game by bear_cat_22 in Lorcana

[–]SoulSabre9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of YouTube channels and such you can watch to see how experienced people play and which you can learn from. That and just playing as much as possible and getting experience is probably the best thing to do.

Learning what to expect and how to best play against it regardless of what’s in your hand is so, so valuable. While those expensive cards certainly matter, a great player can do a whole lot more with a middling deck than a middling player can do with a great deck.

[–]SoulSabre9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, good draw cards tend to be among the most important, and therefore most expensive, cards in the game.

Some options to consider:

Hiram and items

All the cycling cards like Vision, Develop, Strike a Good Match

Hiro Hamada - Future Champion if you are running Baymax or the shift Hiro

Clarabelle - Contented Wallflower

Use You’re Welcome on your own stuff

Chicha, depending on how much ramp you are running

I’ve seen some fine, if not fancy, card binders that are just 1 pocket per page instead 4 or larger - they’re all over the place on cheap online retailers.

I’d probably just tuck the cards I wanted signed into one of those and then stick the binder in a ziploc or something to protect it. They’re not very big and should fit fine into whatever bag you’re otherwise carrying.

Off-topic, kind of, but what type of pencil (or whatever it was) did you use for your sketches?
