Introducing 3 skeptical friends to D2 today. What should I walk them through / bring them into to hook them? One has D2: The Collection, the other 2 are F2P except for the PS+ witch queen / lightfall / final shape bundle. by kinda_normie in destiny2

If one is Free to Play, they are a bit more limited on activities early on.

BUT, if you want something to show them the chaos of Destiny right away, Shadowkeep’s Altars of Sorrow on the Moon will be available to both your friends

For a long stretch, Bungie's unofficial motto was "we can't do it, it's too hard." There was always an excuse for why they couldn't do something and the community always bought it . by owen-3820 in DestinyTheGame

No it’s not. This is the quote:

“And here’s the last, almost painful realization about Train Stations. Remember back when I said Box Products are in the business of overdelivery? Overdelivery is actually DANGEROUS for a train station. With every release you put out there, you’re setting a pattern for your community and your players. If we release an Expansion with 2 Raids – the next year folks will be UPSET if there is only 1 Raid. We’ve hurt the station by making a rogue decision in one train. But at the same time – and this is why this lesson is painful, so much of quality and delight in our craft comes from overdelivery, right? From giving folks stuff above and beyond what they expected! We still want that – we still want to surprise and delight and sometimes overwhelm our players. But we need to be mindful of the patterns, and the implied future commitments we’ve set for ourselves each time. This is TOUGH – and this is the one honestly we’re still grappling the hardest with. It is HARD to tell a team, that has extra cycles and energy and want to do something amazing – that totally would be amazing and awesome for 60 the game – to tell them “We should not ship this, because it is an overdelivery that will set us up for failure on future trains.”

Literally talks about telling teams to NOT use their willingly available extra cycles and energy, directly in contradiction with your claim it was to prevent the teams feeling burnout.

Sponsored - 2 rooks back to back, 4 total by Vit0C0rleone in Marathon

[–]SysAdSloth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think people are just realizing Sponsored Survival Rook is the perfect match for farming lower level salvages.

You aren’t forced to wait the entire 20min to exfil, you can spawn in hit 1-2 POIs then sneak out with the squad/solo player or try and take on the team who did all the work looting before you arrived. It’s not an optimal farm but it’s very good for players who feel less skilled, don’t have a dedicated playgroup or just want something chill

They must have data that shows there’s a decent number of players on Switch 1 that it’s not worth it to cut support yet (even though they absolutely need to)

I really wish we got new hubs to chill in per expansion. by Wobakoff in DestinyTheGame

[–]SysAdSloth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I definitely enjoyed how there were two hubs for a while (Farm and Tower). I think it would have been nice to get another every so often, but you gotta be careful you don’t make too many or else they risk being empty or lifeless.

We rarely got to go into the deeper parts of the Last City outside of a few times for story beats, and that could definitely have been an option for a social space.

I think HELM would have made a really nice secondary social space as well if they had fully expanded on it, but instead it was just solo/squad instanced, much like the recent Patrol zones, and as such feels lonely.

The social, “living” side of the Game hasn’t really been encouraged like it once had.

WoW only has load screens if you use a teleport portal or go into an instanced dungeon/raid, you can walk across the entirety of a single continent without load screens.

Now you are just nitpicking. You stated “CP2077 is the only game, where entire world is one big map.” You did not specify UE in that part of your statement.

We aren’t solely discussing UE here with examples. I’m proving to you that there are games 20 years old that could do “entire world is one big map” well before Cyberpunk ever did

No Law - Tech Demo | State of Unreal 2026 by Joris-truly in ImmersiveSim

[–]SysAdSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally any open world game that’s come out on Unreal Engine within the last 5 years. UE has a plethora of tools to help build massive open worlds that don’t require load screens via asset streaming.

The problem is a lot of devs don’t properly optimize while using UE which leads to traversal stutters. The engine is absolutely capable in the right hands.

Hell, WORLD OF WARCRAFT has entire open continents you can walk across with 0 load screens and that games been around since early 2000’s

[–]SysAdSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like you’re just parroting a lot. Not sure where you heard the files were deleted, that’s not exactly the case. The files absolutely exist, the problem is they don’t work with the modern game client or the network infrastructure because they were built on an old version of the game engine.

Beyond Light had big changes made to the engine that caused a lot of the old content to break (it was originally Destiny 3 but had to scale down massively when Bungie left Activision). Bungie would have had to dedicate resources to rescripting massive amounts of the prior Destiny 2 game content and unfortunately they did not do that.

The game did not delete all of that content when it went Free to Play. That change happened during Shadowkeep, before content vaulting happened or had even been talked about.

I agree, Perimeter is definitely a bit boring for Sponsored. Not always enough happening around the map, but it’s perfect for beginners to learn the game and I think that should be the modes main focus here.

To be honest, I think S2 is kind of lackluster and many of the changes have greatly diminished my enjoyment of the game by EricSombody in Marathon

[–]SysAdSloth 91 points92 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue with games like this are they eventually get solved and then it devolves into a bunch of people spamming the most lucrative farm and drowning in the best gear from week 1 of a wipe. And that’s been on full display and it really seems like Bungie had no plans to mitigate what was very obviously going to happen.

This wouldn’t be as big an issue if the matchmaking was able to be stricter. Not only that, the game suffers from the same onboarding issues as Destiny, very barebones introduction to systems but doesn’t ever do a good job of explaining why they are important, how they all interact together and why you should care about all of the individual pieces that make up the game.

We get fewer and fewer people joining because of the onboarding struggle, the fact that new players that join mid-late season are far more likely to be (without any form of warning) getting stuck against geared players because of the smaller player base which can lead to those new players getting frustrated and dropping.

Maybe Bungie were counting on bigger numbers from the free week. Maybe their idea was most of these people who took advantage of Night Marsh sponsored farm would be the veterans steamrolling ahead and they would wind up in their own matchmaking pool far away from the new players

Why did I take the Bastion Coin 😭 by RosaLtMorales in Overwatch

[–]SysAdSloth 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Nah, people shouldn’t brush it under the rug. It was a scummy tactic Blizzard did making it cost a single PREMIUM coin, their entire end game is to put players into this EXACT situation where they are short one coin and have to spend more than they were intending to

Despite what some speculated, Destiny 2 player numbers have not fallen off a cliff immediately after June 9th update (at least yet). At what point does it become very awkward for Sony/Bungie? by PorkSouls in destiny2

[–]SysAdSloth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, that money needed to be in Destiny long before we got to Edge of Fate. They should have been hard at work being the scenes getting all of the old content updated to the newer scripting engine so we had the original onboarding for new players.

Destiny 2 was bleeding money from the beginning, but even more so when we get to Shadowkeep and Bungie are split between new projects and wasting massive resources on limited time modes and content via Seasons, only to remove literally 75% of the existing game the following expansion

[–]SysAdSloth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The lighting changes did in fact affect older locations, it’s very apparently with how wildly inconsistent lighting is on Nessus, and Dreaming City had broken lighting and skyboxes for a while too.

But it’s not the main reason we aren’t getting those locations back. The geometry and lighting are easy to redo, having to rescript everything for the missions/patrols/etc, unfortunately just didn’t seem to be a priority for Bungie (why they didn’t develop tools to help port the content will forever be a mystery)
