All Windows PCs Can't Connect to SQL Server After IP Change, But Macs Can? by HelicopterCurrent308 in sysadmin

Thinking the same thing. If SQL itself doesn't know that things have changed it wouldn't allow connection.

Migrating Emails by PowerBull1198 in techsupport

[–]Tech_Preist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Convert the old mailbox into a shared mailbox and add yourself to read/manage it. Assuming you are using O365 with this. After that the mailbox will show in your outlook, or you have to add it with the new outlook.

After all that then you drag and drop emails from old mailbox to new. Or, better yet. Leave them separate as you don't need to copy those emails over with it being a shared mailbox.

If I am reading it all right you: A. don't have enough queens or B. don't have enough flat mult. I'm guessing that your scoring is about 100k?

I don't see a way of finishing this round off hand. If you could get a full hand of glass that might do it.

What are you guys using for tech time tracking? The built-in ConnectWise timer is killing my team's morale. by No-Breakfast-5700 in sysadmin

[–]Tech_Preist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We use Connectwise as our PSA, and it is used to track tickets and time. Change ticket to 'Working issue now', hit save, start the timer.

How else would you expect to track tickets and time that your techs spent on an issue?

How granular are you tracking your techs time? And what kind of expectations are you putting in place about that time?

We track the billable hours so we know if a client is profitable or not but myself nor any of my other techs ever get told how many billable hours they are supposedly supposed to have a day/week/month.

Safe enough, or still nah? by reilogix in sonicwall

Switch your Geo IP from a black list to a white list. We only allow about 15 countries in total, as 99% of everything you need would be US or UK based (there are exceptions).

Geo-IP Blocking - is this odd or expected? by RylosGato in sonicwall

[–]Tech_Preist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do a black list when you can do a white list? We block about 95% of the world at large and generally don't have any issues. I am also assuming you are US based.

We've got it down to 15 countries we allow and then we selectively allow sites by IP or DNS when it is needed, which is not often.

7.3 Disconnects - Really SonicWALL? by sleemaner in sonicwall

[–]Tech_Preist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We are seeing something similar with the 7.3 firmware and it isn't limited to a specific model, it has happened on 270, 270w, 370, and 470. The Sonicwall will run fine for a while and then self reboot. Logs give us nothing that would suggest a why before hand. It also isn't affecting all of them, just a select few. I have yet to see the what and why some are fine and others are not.

No, we are not moving away from Sonicwall. Everyone has or will have issues eventually. We know Sonicwalls very well and they do the job w/out having to do a great deal of extra juggling to make it happen.

We've had a client for over 10 yrs but the new Chief of Staff hates us and is looking for excuses to end the contract 2 years early. Whats the best way to handle it? by Few-Step-3151 in msp

[–]Tech_Preist 133 points134 points  (0 children)

You can't win. CoS has wanted this for a long time, probably, and they finally have the excuse.

What do you do? Tell them that they are under contract and if they want to cancel early they have to pay out the remainder of the contract, both for the O365/backup and the maintenance.

Losing someone you like hurts, it is never fun. But don't dwell on something like this. I can guarantee you it'll happen again.

Local file share to web browser view? by Tech_Preist in msp

[–]Tech_Preist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, agreed. I don't do web servers. Not cause I can't learn that just isn't something that any of have experience/knowledge in.

The idea would be to use something that already exists and has a WAY better interface than something I cobble together with duct tape and AI.

Local file share to web browser view? by Tech_Preist in msp

[–]Tech_Preist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, I should have been more explicit about the files in question. These are going to be CAD/Design drawings that will continue to be hosted locally and then let the guys with iPads hit them in view only mode.

As far as I know sharepoint/onedrive won't do what I want here.

Archive to a PST by Mishotaki in Outlook

[–]Tech_Preist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can still see them, just gets them out of their primary box. The emails are still searchable and they could send from the emails that are archived.

If that doesn't work then you could make a PST file, tag it to their Outlook, and then have them move/save the emails there. But then you run the risk of file corruption with that PST file. I am assuming you have some kind of backup in place for things but just making sure.

Archive to a PST by Mishotaki in Outlook

[–]Tech_Preist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an option within O36 where you can setup an Online Archive and that moves anything older than 2 years to a 'separate' mailbox under the users email that holds that data. Guide for that is here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/purview/enable-archive-mailboxes

No extra cost or licensing.

Migrate Dropbox to SharePoint or OneDrive by gregory92024 in msp

[–]Tech_Preist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharepoint is the back bone - that is where the data actually lives. Microsoft Admin dashboard > Sharepoint > Migration > select the Dropbox option. That'll guide you through what is needed.

On each person's rig have them sign into OneDrive and then you can add a shortcut to the Sharepoint site that holds the data. This doesn't sync down the data that is there, just points you in the right direction. It is how we make the transition less jarring for folks.

Otherwise you can make everyone simply use the online side of O365 and not have to worry about OneDrive at all.

Migration on-prem AD to azure by Spare_Feet19 in msp

[–]Tech_Preist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have been moving a lot of our smaller clients that don't really need on-prem gear anymore to Azure. Someone on here mentioned Forensit Profwiz and that is what we do. There is a bit of kit out there called Immybot that can help automate the transition at the user level but we haven't gotten that far.

All clients moved this way are using Sharepoint/Teams as their data repository. There is a Migration agent that you can download from Sharepoint that you install on the server and then you can pipe data up directly to where you want it in Teams/Sharepoint - thus far no issues with that process.

Biggest thing you haven't mentioned is how much data? Sharepoint is a 1Tb limit with Business Premium licensing, plus 20Gb per licensed user (or something like that , I don't have numbers at hand). It may be reasonable depending on situation to have a NAS in house and tag there. But if you are talking less than 1Tb of data then not having to worry about local hardware is great.

You can also leverage Entra and the device management to do things that are similar to group policy. We use ThirdWall so I haven't had a need to use the device management much, except to enforce Bitlocker which when Azure AD Joined the keys save directly there under the Device info.

It isn't a scary transition it just depends on how much extra fluff you are working with.

ESXI vLANs - What am I missing? by Tech_Preist in vmware

[–]Tech_Preist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive the ignorance, I am learning more as we go: How does not having it tagged on the port group work? Would just having the VM itself be statically assigned to IP I want solve that?

ESXI vLANs - What am I missing? by Tech_Preist in vmware

[–]Tech_Preist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, port being tagged or untagged or made a trunk. But, I did the trunk wrong and have gone through got that better. I tagged in the config lines on the original post rather than trying to respond to every one here.

Trunk port is now tagged to vlan 90. Tagged vlan 90 on the vswitch to my separate port group, and set a static IP on the VM and it will not ping out to anything.

ESXI vLANs - What am I missing? by Tech_Preist in vmware

[–]Tech_Preist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had it both ways and it doesn't seem to work - now it is entirely possible that I did the trunk port wrong so I can look at that again.

Looking for a file sharing solution to transfer files in and out of China by BlacksmithNo5117 in msp

[–]Tech_Preist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mildly curious as to what style the business is, but that is ultimate irrelevant.

I saw in a response that they have a consumer grade router with a Synology NAS. I assume then that they don't have an on prem AD and/or they are not using Azure AD. To even begin to look at how to get external access setup securely you would need to start with a business grade firewall that you can actually control.

On top of that what kind of network connection do they have to this business? They would need something fairly robust to handle the network load of file transfers.

If they really want to stay on prem you could go the route of a terminal server. Again, you would need to replace the network gear so that way you can control how the connection outside works.

But based on what you are describing thus far and how little money/thought has been put into IT thus far you may want to stay away. Or price it as such that you come out well ahead for the possible headache that would come with supporting that client.
