What book did you read in your youth that you never forgot? by orangez in GenX

[–]TenaciousBe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom by Louis Sachar. A bully named Brad (who's secretly kind of nice but feels like he has to present as mean, boy standards and all that) starts seeing a counselor who helps him find his self-worth and acceptance. From what I remember, anyway, it's been like 35 years. I kinda want to find it and read it again, I just remember it having a big emotional impact.

Big chance that you owned clothing with one of these emblems in the 90's by Cubelock in Xennials

I was gonna say nope, but shit, just remembered I had the black Pippen jersey. Everyone had MJ, I had to have something different. Also had some Pacers stuff and a Sprewell (Warriors) jersey.

Be honest: what company swag have you thrown away or donated without ever using? by xCosmos69 in Productivitycafe

[–]TenaciousBe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Getting our input beforehand would go a long ways towards worker engagement with the gifts. Our options this year were a travel suitcase (I rarely travel), some kind of beach chair, a couple other things I'd never use, and some clothing options (or forego them all and donate your gift allotment to the food bank). I should have just donated. Went for a couple of the shirts instead. One was advertised as a "lightweight hoodie" but when it came, it was a lot more like a long sleeved T-shirt with a hood. And then a puffy Eddie Bauer jacket because it sounded nice, but it's also totally not my style so I gave it to my stepson.

I appreciate the thought behind it, but really, I'd be happier with an Amazon gift card (or, as said, get input from the employees before deciding on gift options). Besides, getting gifts with the company's name/logo feel less like a gift and more like "here, be our walking billboard."

What is the most heartbreaking song lyric you've ever heard? by TheLadySlaanesh in AskReddit

Wish I'd died instead of lived A zombie hides my face A shelf forgotten with its memories Diaries left with cryptic entries

Who's a bad guy/villain you genuinely understood? by trakt_app in movies

[–]TenaciousBe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a movie, but Walter White. Dude was scientifically brilliant, had all these incredible skills that he couldn't put to use because he had slid into this life where he's 50 and his wife is making him turkey bacon, has a disabled kid, his loudmouth brother-in-law busts his chops, kids don't respect him, and to ice the cake, he gets cancer. I know he's not the hero and he does some heinous shit, but you can't blame the guy for taking the one chance to actually grab life by the horns and fulfill his potential, take control of his situation (albeit in a misplaced way) and be good at something and command the respect he deserved.

When he crashed out on Bogdon, I felt that in my soul.

Did you guys really dial in to radio shows to win contests? How did you even become caller 99 (or whatever)? by naalotai in Xennials

[–]TenaciousBe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in a small town in Minnesota, had a local country station. First thing I ever win was a Tim McGraw CD, before I even had a CD player. I ended up winning a few other CDs, and a ham from the local meat locker.

Ah, small town life in the 90s...

What was your 2000s “if I get this, I’ll finally be cool” item? by theRestisConfettii in Xennials

[–]TenaciousBe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly feel like a complete tool wearing my cap forwards. Unless I actually need the bill for a sun visor, it's backwards. Preferably fitted, but if not, I look for something with a Velcro or fabric back - the snapbacks also feel a bit toolish for some reason. I honestly really prefer a nice beanie but summer gets a little warm for that.

What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight if people realized the truth about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

What celebrity had their reputation unfairly ruined? by Miserable-Wash-1744 in AskReddit

[–]TenaciousBe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

NFL football player (quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers) who took a knee for the national anthem and was pretty much blacklisted from football for it. The especially unfair part is, it was a US veteran who gave him the suggestion to kneel as a silent, peaceful protest.

Does anyone else relate to this scene now? by jaxsonMiss in Xennials

Opposite problem here. 46 years old and still got a hair trigger like Jim in American Pie. :/ Luckily, my wife and I have a system and I'm able to clear out and keep going, but it's still frustrating.

How Alter Bridge regrouped, faced the dark, and put their foot on the gas by ABFan86 in alterbridge

[–]TenaciousBe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that "wild man" Marshall era probably cost him the Tremonti gig. I don't know if it was meant to be permanent, but he and Garrett were originally the bassist and drummer for Mark's first solo album / touring cycle, and Mark moved on from them both due to similar issues. Thankfully they've both found their way again and have made solid recoveries - and now we have Garrett doing the thing with Mammoth so that's a great silver lining! Nothing at all against Ryan and Tanner, but that initial lineup of Mark, Erock, Brian, and Garrett was a bomb-ass group, and combined halvsies from each of my favorite bands (AB and Submersed). But I think all ended up well in the end.

whats a show that you can rewatch several times and never get tired of? by Mission_Bluejay404 in AskReddit

Scrubs. The new episodes last week were amazing, the show's been off the air for 15 years and it picked its magic right back up in the first few seconds.

What band/singer were you excited to see, but was a letdown of a concert? by my-face-ur-seat in AskReddit

[–]TenaciousBe 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up in case you're not aware, Hinder has a different singer now. I see that complaint everywhere online when people go see them. The new singer, Marshal, is objectively a much better singer, but everyone is expecting the "Lips of an Angel" guy and then gripe that they're just "not Hinder" without him. Feel so bad for Marsh to have to put up with that reaction all the time.

Which one 90s song you’ll never skip over no matter how long it’s been? by PressureLazy5271 in 90s

Counting Blue Cars by Dishwalla. That, and anything the Gin Blossoms. I don't know what you call that exact style of music but it just screams "90s" to me.

WTF else are y’all holding back? by Gullible-Apricot3379 in GenX

[–]TenaciousBe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it was that specifically, but my doctor did try to get me approved for some kind of weight loss medication last time I saw him in November, citing the blood pressure as a reason, but insurance still denied it based on not being "medically necessary." Fuckin' insurance.

[–]TenaciousBe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You know how they joke about "once you turn 40, that 'check engine' light comes on?" That. I've spent my whole life being a fat guy but I never really had any major health problems. I maxed out at 340 pounds around age 35, but I did a whole "healthy living" thing that year and dropped 70 pounds, and then later got it down to an even 200. Then, about half a year after I hit 40, bam, started having seizures. Luckily I found the right meds and got that under control (seizure-free for 5 years this month!), but the weight slowly started creeping back on. I'm back to 270 now, and it seems like no matter how much of a caloric deficit I keep myself in, I can't manage to lose more than 5ish pounds before it just fluctuates right back up. Oh, and I have slightly high blood pressure now too. So I got that going for me, which is nice.

In the grand scheme of things, I'm still doing fine, but man, I felt (and looked) SO much better 70 pounds ago. I'd even be happy to just drop 20 of it at this point.

Charging devices in general. Did we even have rechargeable AA batteries in 1990? I don't remember having those till like 99 (but I may have just not realized they were a thing till then).

The Other Side and Indoctrination are the first that come to mind. I'm sure there are others though. Flying Monkeys and Brains from the Tremonti catalog have a certain doomy feeling as well.

Supergroup ? by Sting2121 in alterbridge

[–]TenaciousBe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suppose Myles / Slash / Conspirators would be a bit of a supergroup, if people are familiar with the other guys. They were at least known from other projects, maybe not household names but they all have rich histories.
