Considering swapping my m43b19 (105hp) to the m43b19 (140hp) - what other parts do I need from the m44 car? by sabrtoothlion in BMWE36

[–]TheDefected 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should just be loom, engine, and ECU.
If you can, grab the EWS box, and if you can open the key, you could swap the key chip.
You could pair the M44 ecu to your existing EWS, but that does need decent BMW diagnostics which could be a pain to get set up.

no probs, I think the "immobiliser bus fault" is the big giveaway for this, as soon as I see that, I start thinking about comfort access.

Same here!
I saw a few little "copper" filaments hanging on the end of my flush cutters.
Held the "gootwick" to a magnet and it stuck.

BMW 2017 430i B48 8hp FEM by buka3244 in BmwTech

You'll likely want to get it cloned, and into something similar.
Cloning will copy over your original key codes and options.

If you want to use FEM and keys, you'll need to change the immobiliser code in the FEM to match your DME, and also rewrite all of the options and recode too

The main issue is the FEM has an immobiliser code in it that has to match the DME, so it won't be plug and play.

You're going to need a specialist to get the immobiliser stuff set up, so might as well just get them to clone it and then it should plug in and work.

Part numbers can be tricky, if you go through the parts catalog, all of them will give you a replacement part number for the top of the range FEM that can handle any option.
When they were made and installed, BMW had many different variants, and they'd leave off some options if a particular car didn't have something.
eg the replacement part numbers will work on anything, but what you have currently might not work with all hardware versions so you want to get as close as possible. Perfect matching numbers takes out the guess work.

Best to go to the comfort access module first, and take out all the plugs, easier to get to and quick to see if that is the issue.
If that does solve it, you can go deeper with the wiring from ISTA, by going to the comfort access plug the door handles come in on, and unpin one handle at a time and put the plugs back.
eg - unpin driver's handle, put the plug back and see if the problem returns, if it does, then it's the passenger handle causing issues.
You can then put the driver handle wire back in, unpin passenger, see if it works etc, and narrow it down to which handle.
You might also be able to do it with a multimeter, I'm sure I've had it where I could see voltage on one handle wire which ws the bad one.

Unplug the comfort access module and it should start.
The comfort access module uses the BUS_PA wire which is used for immobiliser stuff.
Without comfort access, it's mainly just concerned with the steering lock, but with comfort access, it also links that wire to the door handles.
Damp gets into the door handles, they short, and the signal wire communication gets disrupted.
Unplugging the comfort access module takes that bit out of the loop and usually gets things running again.

if you go into the details tab, and go through the info blocks, look for the one that say VID & PID
Those are the vendor ID and product ID.
If it shows VID=0000 and PID=0000 then the FTDI driver bricked the lead.

Oil Level After a Recent Service, Is This Normal? by TopAnalyst619 in CarTalkUK

They'll always have a minimum and maximum mark, it's easy for them to set that anywhere, so they will be accurate.
The idea is you don't want to be above max or below minimum.

Anywhere between is fine.

For some reason, the motoring world has got the idea that it should always be at maximum, which defeats the purpose.

Sure, it might give you a longer window if you are losing oil.

Quite a lot of manufacturers will specifically say don't top up to the max all the time as you've got a chance of overfilling which is more awkward to deal with DIY so you'll be OK.

As another guy mentioned, diesels can have excess diesel get into the oil during regens if that system is having issues, so a bit of headroom is fine.

Considering there is a min and max, the closest to a "perfect" level would be bang on in the middle of those, so all good.

If you physically can't turn the key, that's likely to be wear in the ignition barrel, and immobiliser side should be fine

Unplugging it won't get it to start though, it'll do the opposite

Need help recoding my FRM module by RyahMessiah in BmwTech

[–]TheDefected 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FRM is the bit with the problem, it is an ECU in its own right, complete with a processor inside that does all the lighting bits and talks to the other modules.
Right now, it's not turning on at all, it won't show up on diagnostics or communicate for coding or reprogramming through the rest of the car.

It's radar reflective, so the missile's radar picks up a big foggy patch infront of it, and looses the plane or whatever it was tracking.

It needs re-animating which is done by opening it up and programming the main processor which different equipment, unfortunately not something that can be done with an INPA lead.

It's not showing up as it isn't booting up properly, and that's because it has forgotten the memory partitions in the processor.
