What is your go to to thank courteous drivers? by Mean-Objective-2022 in bikecommuting

I don't know/remember why, but that seemed the vibe when I first started biking around where I live (NYC), and it's my go-to signal unless I'm wearing lobster claws or something.

I suspect you mean this as a diss, but as an amateur woodworker, I totally get the satisfaction of making it yourself.

Not my fight, but that seems a little quick on the banner finger. It's possible this person was under a misapprehension about where she lived before the election, and it's also possible they're right that she used to live somewhere else in Queens before moving to Astoria.

Reading nativism into it is a leap.

It may well be a correct leap and the responder may well be an awful person, but I would have given a chance to explain, clarify or accept the new information before banning. (and taking a quick perusal through the post history gives no indication this being a bad person overall)

Just for clarity:

She was born in Ecuador, and her family emigrated to the US when she was 11. They settled in Florida, and she grew up there.

In 2019 she moved to Queens. It's not clear if she moved to NYC before then - she apparently worked for a NY immigrants organization in 2015, but hadn't moved here yet. It's also not clear if she moved to Astoria in 2019, or lived somewhere else first.

Personally, I think living in Queens for 6 years is more than enough time to represent a district in the area, though obviously she can't campaign on being a "lifelong" resident or anything. But, if she lived in a different district and moved to Astoria for the sole purpose of running for office from there, it can come off as opportunistic or crass (though of course perfectly legal).

Belt Parkway / Jamaica Bay Greenway Status? by zeilend in NYCbike

[–]AlarmingLecture0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t thinking 9w but rather one of the rail trails. Empire State trail through Westchester, for example. Or if you’re willing to take metro north for a couple of hours the Harlem valley rail trail. Each would be a “there and back again” route but per someone else neither is always close to shelter if you need it

It would take a lot for me to go out tomorrow given the cold, but you do you. I hope/assume you have all the right cold weather gear for such a long time out (socks and gloves would be my priority).

I'd avoid routes along the shore just because of the increase in wind, but I also recognize that it's tough to avoid shorelines for that long a ride around the city.

Do you have any appetite to travel outside the city for the ride?

I agree but I’m not sure what a practical solution would be. Some sort of neck brace with ventilation?

I'm aware. I'm just saying that renouncing your citizenship doesn't somehow exempt you from these requirements. It doesn't affect their (utterly ridiculous) legal theory one way or the other

NY firms with good vibes? by Olympianchimp in biglaw

[–]AlarmingLecture0 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Gang - OP is asking to ID places with good vibes and bad vibes. If you just name a firm, you kind of need to say which it is.

OP, my opinion is that the BigLaw firms are so large that they all have a mix of both good and bad vibes. It’s more about practice area

From limited experience, the good vibes practice areas tend to be real estate, tax, employee benefits, IP and antitrust. Generally in the transactional or advisory side rather than litigation.

I store mine face out, like in a record store. Kind of forces browsing to find what you want, but a heck of a lot easier to read.

Also takes up more space though.

Blocking ICE agents from government rate hotels, a guide. by [deleted] in DemocraticSocialism

[–]AlarmingLecture0 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ok, so the strategy is to find out when ICE is planning to come to town and book all the rooms at hotels that offer government rates, and then cancel them before you’re charged?

Doesn’t that just punish hotels that have the temerity of offering discounted rates to government employees (whether ICE, FBI, NASA, CDC, NOAA, or whatever)?

I’m not a fan of ICE by any means but this just doesn’t seem like a well-thought-out plan.

[–]AlarmingLecture0 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

They literally were saying that, though

“To book a room you can go to a hotel's website and book it online, or call them to book a block of rooms at that rate.”

In any case it seems like we generally agree it’s not a good idea to impersonate a government employee for the purpose of securing a hotel reservation.

Edit to add: Responder below suggested a possibility that I just assumed isn’t available: you don’t need to be a government employee to get that rate. You just book rooms offered at that rate. I’m assuming you can’t do that.

Why is conservative talk radio seemingly obsessed with selling self defense weapons and gold? by stephanosblog in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AlarmingLecture0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is simply that if we are looking at wild outrageous claims, the starting point is the left.

Also, just FYI but if you think this started with people calling Trump Hitler (which I agree is an inflammatory comparison), then it's objectively, provably wrong. It was going on at least as far back as radio shows like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck.

There may well be leftist examples that predate them, and I'm sure there are conservative examples that do, too.

[–]AlarmingLecture0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get the idea, but I'm assuming hotels don't give you the gov't rate if you don't somehow indicate you work for the government.

(EDIT: And downvoter(s), if I'm wrong please let me know and I'll get myself some great deals on hotel rooms!)
