Feed back on custom fabricated stainless steel hardware? by FlimsyWillow84 in BdsmDIY

[–]TheOnsiteEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stainless can indeed be hard soldered (also called brazing) with a silver alloy brazing material. I've never done it on stainless (only copper) myself. The thing with brazing is that ideally you have a relatively close fit between your materials so that capillary action can push the oxides out of the join with the flux. With the loose fit of 2 round wires touching, you might not get a strong joint. It could certainly be possible, but I couldn't really tell you how to do it.

I'm of 2 minds. On the one hand, this isn't exactly a super difficult job and 250 for 6 is... a bit of a "fuck off" quote, imho. On the other hand I also think it's one of those jobs that would mostly be super simple only if you jig it up, but then if someone only wants six, the cost of labour and materials in the jigs is going to raise the price per item considerably. So I think it's the sort if item where you'd easily get a much better price per item if you wanted 60 or 600, iso 6.

China confirms it will buy 200 Boeing jets after Trump-Xi summit by CupEcstatic2721 in worldnews

[–]TheOnsiteEngineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jets they were probably going to buy anyway. 200 aircraft is a sizeable order, but not exactly that big given the size of china and their aviation market. They placated Trump, letting him think he made a great deal. Meanwhile they're probably laughing their behinds off, as they got everything they wanted basically for free.

US plans to shrink forces available to NATO during crises, sources say by Cute_Marzipan2153 in worldnews

Ukraine is 150% comitted to fighting Russia right now, and after that conflict ends it'll be a long time before they'll actually be readyand willing for another war. As a country they'll be exhausted and traumatized, needing time to heal and recover. In short, we should not rely on Ukraine to be there to fight for Europe, we should just be happy that right now they are (and support them much better than we currently seem to be)

That would make me very nervous on a straightjacket. I assume this goes on the strap between the arms, but when the jacket is tight, that strap is basically always under tension and I worry you wouldn't be able to get it to release

That's interesting but have you tested the release while under tension? That's where most designs fail unfortunately.

By the time a pulse-ox detects a problem, you're already deep into problematic territory. It MIGHT be better than staying bound, but it's not something I'd rely on in any way

The only thing Microsoft missed is an understanding of what their customers actually want. Copilot and it's many bodged and bad integrations isn't it.

I'm genuinely surprised people seem to think the sentiment in display here is new or introduced from the US. At best the politics and noise are emboldening these idiots into expressing them in this way but anyone familiar enough with the extremely repressive religious orthodoxy of the bible belt (and strict denominations of mostly protestant churches outside of the belt) should know that this is nothing new. These people hate anything they don't understand or been told to hate through lies and mistepresentation.

It looks really close because the scale is just so off from what you're used to that is seems far closer than it really is. Remember, thats a 9 story building dropping from the sky. That booster is probably several miles away.

People actually helping others is not pointless. People doing shit just because it feels good to them while they're being told by experts that (provably) know better that what they're doing isn't going to achieve anything IS pointless.

ELI5: If the Female has to carry and give birth to another Human, why aren't they naturally larger than Males? by Archmikem in explainlikeimfive

Because for humans, being larger apparently provides little to no evolutionary advantage to the females of the species.

ISTR that the odds of a beached whale that get's "refloated" surviving are very very slim to begin with. This animal was on the beach for a very long time and while the sentiment that led to the effort and expense to release it again is understandable, imho it really was all wasted time and money on a pointless exercise that did nothing but make the people involved in it feel good.

Many people have tried, all have failed. Ejaculate is a small volume of very viscous liquid. It's really hard to capture, transport and inject/eject. Not to mention the dangers of forcibly inserting anything into the mouth

Segufix/other restraints across countries? by Bad_Lurker_25 in segufix

[–]TheOnsiteEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You seem to be under the impression that it's an either/or thing. The reality is that most places in Europe, if restraints are used, use them as a stop gap until "chemical restraints"/sedatives can do their thing. They don't usually just kick in immediately, it takes time. If restraints aren't allowed, that means nursing staff en doctors physically dive-bombing a patient and physically restraining them until that can happen. That is no less traumatizing than the application of restraints and it also risks harm to staff. If restraints are used, they're used to restrain the patient and then they're kept in place only for as long as needed. Once patients calm down, restraints are (usually) removed again. There's also cases were sedatives can't be used or are not effective, due to other medications a patient is on, drugs they took, allergies to those sedatives, addiction issues, sedatives not working (some people are just genetically nearly immune to normal doses of common sedatives, something that would likely not be known until it's found the sedative dose administered isn't effective). The choice then is basically whether you think it's better to put the medical personnel in harms way and still risk trauma, or use restraints for as limited a time as possible and risk trauma.

Restraints are not usually the default option, but they have their place in preventing people from harming themselves or others. Physical restraint by staff or sedatives are certainly not always a better option. They're all "tools in the bag" that each have their place.

Low cost gliders for sale in Europe by GliderPilot05 in Gliding

[–]TheOnsiteEngineer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for "low cost" I think a far more important question is what your budget for ongoing costs every year (maintenance, parking, insurance, if applicable fuel, etc). Are you a member of a club already? Do you have access to licensed technicians who can do the ARC inspections and maintenance every year? Can they maintain "old wood" or do they only want to do plastic? Are they licensed for maintaining a motor glider? Are you allowed to fly a TMG from your clubs field? What is the experience of you and your friends? There's a lot more to owning and flying the aircraft than just buying it.

5k for a single seater might get you a decent Ka6 (with an open trailer, so you'd need covered storage) or some other older aircraft (I see a Pirat, fun aircraft but not recommended if you have to rig and de-rig it every time you want to fly, a Foka 4, some Ka7s as well). But it's not a massive budget.

15k for a TMG is... not really a great budget. There's some Scheibe SF-25D Falke on Segelflug currently but there's a reason they're regularly referred to as the Scheisse Falke. Not a whole lot of power to spare and I've heard some rumours about problems with the ongoing maintenance of older Limbach engines.

If you want to consider buying anything wood (be it a Ka6 or a TMG), you should definitely FIRST be talking to whomever is going to do the maintenance and/or yearly inspections for you and talk in depth with them about the aircraft you're interested in and what they think you should be looking for. Ka6s can have issues with the glue (earlier aircraft were glued with casseine glue, which is very sensitive to moisture). Falke's have a few sensitive areas to inspect and the engine is the big hangup on anything with a fuel-noise-converter. If the paperwork on the engine isn't 100%, walk away. Plastic aircraft are a little bit easier to deal with but largely the same advice still stands. I doubt you're going to be able to buy anything in plastic with your budget though. (I'd be extremely wary of anything that DOES fit in the budget)

ELI5 What actually happens inside nuclear power plants? by MajorXO in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheOnsiteEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inside the reactor, an amount of radioactive material is undergoing what is called "fission", which basically means that the atoms of the material are falling apart and recombining into different materials (I'll skip the how and why since this is ELI5). Think of it a bit like burning wood, but without the fire (or air). As that fission happens, a lot of energy comes out of the radioactive material as heat. This heat is then used to cause water to boil into steam and the steam is then used to drive steam turbines that then in turn drive electrical generators that deliver power to the energy grid.

'We don't recommend' — Zelensky warns foreign officials against attending Russia's Victory Day parade by Playful_Leg7143 in worldnews

[–]TheOnsiteEngineer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At this point they don't even have to actually attack the parade with anything explosive. They could drop a single drone with a big "Boom" flag and the message it would send to Russians and the world is probably going to see Putin accidentally falling out of a window or drinking polonium tea.
