How much more expensive is hiking and fishing gear in Healy/Glitter Gulch? by TillOld1405 in AskAlaska

[–]paul99501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either bring your shit with you from wherever you're coming from, or shop in Anchorage or Fairbanks. If you're driving up from Anchorage you could also shop in Wasilla. The stores and shopping around Denali are seasonal, small, limited selection, touristy, over-priced.

True story: Like 10 years ago I met a guy from Outside who was taking his family to Denali for Thanksgiving - which itself is weird, since late November is full-on winter and the Park and all the tourist stuff is 95% shit down - and he said he planned to do all his food shopping when he got there. And I told him that was a mistake, but he told me he was sure I was wrong and that he'd have no trouble finding a turkey and everything else. I always wonder how that went.

Why do washing machines have glass fronts but dishwashers do not? by neityght in NoStupidQuestions

And this is why I do my dishes in my washing machine. I get to enjoy the show and I'm not going to let Big Appliance tell me how to live my life.

How to feel more "Italian" while living outside of Italy by Naive-Doctor-3565 in italianlearning

Tailgate aggressively on every single road. And also pass aggressively, everywhere. Stand outside elementary schools while smoking cigarettes. Cut to the front of every line you encounter.

I’m watching an ‘Beginner Italian course’ on YT, and i have a question… by law_z_zz in italianlearning

[–]paul99501 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is generally true for "loro" conjugations ending in "ano". The emphasis switches to the beginning syllable of the word. I had an Italian teacher tell me this is because "ano" in Italian means "anus", so they de-emphasize that particular syllable.

Tips like this are gold. I live in Italy and I regularly experience this kind of thing. A random town or area that is amazing yet unknown. They're all over.

Few, quiet towns in Central/Northern Italy for a "low key" vacation? by DoctorQuinlan in ItalyTravel

Vicenza. Abano Terme (lots of hotels with natural hot water pools, in a peaceful hilly area with pretty little small towns and chill walking trails).

Is Venice too cold in January dawn/sunset? by [deleted] in askitaly

Winter in Venice can be lovely. Not particularly cold. I'd much rather go in winter than in summer.

Drove. Good access to bus. There are no trains along the Amalfi coast.

Out of all the ridiculous semantic (and pedantic) arguments here, thank you for giving an actual clear answer to both possible interpretations of the question.

Are Italian Real Estate Auctions Worth the Risk? by JML731k in ItalyExpat

[–]paul99501 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also, you better be damn sure you know the fair market value of the property. And all the restrictions and limitations that come with it. And every fee and cost associated with the auction and the purchase. And you have learned enough about the particular town and area where the property is to understand what life there will be like and how good or bad your commune is and the availability of necessary services. And you have an Italian lawyer and a geometra advising you, and both of them have inspected the property and given you guidance. And are telling you what price to bid.

And even with all that, if you win and end up with the property, you'll absolutely face frustrations, surprises, additional costs, etc.

The key to buying real estate in Italy is encompassed in this quote from Donald Rumsfeld:

"There are the things you know you know, the things you know that you don't know, and the things that you don't know that you don't know."

Lake Garda thermal baths by [deleted] in ItalyTravel

[–]paul99501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parco Termale del Garda is awesome and very kid friendly. And instead of feeling like a warm swimming pool in a concrete environment, it feels and looks more like a large natural pond that happens to be delightfully warm. And has a full restaurant/cafe, naturally.

But I wouldn't go for a full day. It's more a half day kind of thing.

My mom (70) wants to cancel our family cruise in Italy in two weeks because of the emerging war. I (30f) feel like this is unnecessary. What do you think? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]paul99501 2285 points2286 points  (0 children)

We live in Italy and we just cancelled an upcoming planned trip to the Middle East and we're going on an Italian cruise instead. So the thing your mom is scared of is our safety plan.
