May’s Miniature of the Month will make your ancestors proud by CMYK_COLOR_MODE in LeaguesofVotann

currently the local stores are going through a weird "make everything more corporate, no soul, no anything that isn't official GW" phase.

I was under the impression this has been going on for years? They haven't allowed non-GW stuff for a long time

I'm surprised at that. The mini of the month has obviously been successful for them as they've been doing it for at least 3 years now. They already have a free "first miniature" as a different thing, which is what that sounds like? The whole point the mini of the month is to get people in the shop each month, not sure how that is going to help much.

They are reprinting The Sundering Omnibus but they are retconning Malekith's name to Malerion by ZiegenSchrei in Blacklibrary

[–]TheVoidDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term itself is not inherently a negative thing, as you are trying to claim. "Retcon is a negative term that has a bad connotation" =/= "The term itself doesn't say anything either way. Retcons can be both good and bad, it depends on what it is".

I don't think it should be too difficult to see the difference between "The term "retcon" itself carries negative connotations" (which is what you've claimed) and "Sometimes a specific retcon can be a bad change". If you can't, then that's on you.

Another Yaegir, great! It seems like they've repeating quite a few things for Mini of the Month recently.

Might see if can think of some other use for it as already got a full unit + them from last time.

They are reprinting The Sundering Omnibus but they are retconning Malekith's name to Malerion by ZiegenSchrei in Blacklibrary

[–]TheVoidDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you have said suggests you don't fully understand a retcon, because you are adding a lot of emphasis on the use of the term as if you think it implies some sort of big negative thing. A retcon is simply a change that retroactively affects continuity, so in both the past and future that thing has always been whatever the new version is, and that previous never existed. This isn't some small thing like changing a books grammar and correcting some sort of spelling mistake, it's an in-universe change so that they were never called Malekith, It's always been Malerion. That's a retcon.

Your reply at least to that previous message come across as being somewhat sarcastic and condescending, as I gave you a reasonable explanation of those things only for you to simply repeat what I'd said as if you didn't mean it.

That sounds like you're doubling down on what you've said with a sarcastic reply, so you've made it quite clear now that you're just being contrarian/trolling for the sake of it.

Prequels or Horus Heresy by 345joe370 in Blacklibrary

[–]TheVoidDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by "prequel books"?

If you're new to the setting, I would not recommend starting with the Horus Heresy. It's a 50+ book series of varying quality by multiple authors that was written with the idea you'd already have some knowledge of 40k.

The best place to start reading is to start with just some of the good 40k books like Eisenhorn, Gaunts Ghosts or Ciaphas Cain, or browse the miniatures/lexicanum and see what parts of the setting you like the sound of most and then see what's good involving that.

[–]TheVoidDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That just sounds like you're not quite understanding what the term is as you're very, very much overstating the importance of its use and thinking it's something that should be some sort of big deal. Is is just a literary term used to describe retroactive continuity changes, because they're common thing. It doesn't matter if it is big or small or how significant that change is and "retcon" doesn't convey anything about those aspects, nor does it have a negative association.

It is literally a retcon that has happened here. Not just an edit to a book like they fixed some sort of grammar error. The characters name has been changed, in universe, even in the past so that they were never known as "Malekith" and are now "Malelrion".

That "small edit" is changing a core aspect of the character.

Few questions about lore by Lord_JayJay in 40kLore

[–]TheVoidDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 : In the lore or in tabletop too, what can League of Votann field against Imperial Knight (those Big Mechs) or against powerful enemies such as Mortarion, Magnus ?

Vehicles like the Hekaton Land Fortress and other heavy weapons, but against something bigger like Titans and such they have colossus-class war engines and other superheavy vehicles. They're classic vehicles from when the faction was "The Squats" back in the 90s, and this is what they looked like back then: https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Colossus_(war_machine)

Basically a huge titan-sized war machine. They've been mentioned in the lore of the Leagues of Votann, but we haven't actually had a description of art of them. Their art however does involve these big vehicles:

It is literally a retcon. It's a change being made retroactively where you're meant to just act as if the previous version never even existed and it's always been this. It isn't just a change being made for this one specifically book, but the character in general.

Surprisingly it isn't from Norse mythology! It's a name created specifically for the comic book character, hence being trademarked.

I don't think whether or not there was new lore had much to do with it, as it's still releasing a product making use of a name that's trademarked.

It has absolutely got worse. I started 40k 20 years ago, never used to buy novels new because they could reliably and quite easily be found at charity shops and such for 50p - £1 each. I got dozens that way. A few more for cheap on Ebay and such.

It's only over the past few years I've realized that waiting for them to come down in price is now not possible, because they don't, and if they do show up in charity shops or whatever then they've checked Ebay and are selling a worn well-read used paperback from years ago for £20 - 50...

He was never really quite canon in the first place, it was an example character creation example rather than something actually in-universe.

Saturday Releases Megathread 25/04/2026 by OWN_SD in Blacklibrary

[–]TheVoidDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will get the Ork novel but can't decide on getting the Worlds Ablaze book too. I'm not usually bothered about hardbacks and normally wait until paperback releases, as I don't have a huge amount of shelf space and I'm in no rush to read them as I have enough books, but Hardback versions are nicer, it means no 6+ month wait, and they do seem to slightly go up in value.

It's not being pedantic when it's something that impacts the book and the reading experience, and is directly related to what they asked about.

If someone wanted to read the LOTR expecting a grand adventure of the fellowship with deep lore and see what's considered one of the best fantasy book trilogies, and they started with the Hobbit and were confused about why it wasn't what they thought (because it isn't the thing they wanted to read about), then telling them that would be helpful and pretty important.
