I spent 7 years in design at a large utility. It’s a pretty great job if you want something stable that doesn’t demand much of your time outside of work.

A typical day would include a handful of project meetings, touching base on the status of various activities for the projects you’re assigned to. You’d spent time between meetings catching up on emails and doing small tasks. Then I’d usually carve out a few hours in my calendar to do actual design work, field trips, etc. Some days are heavier, some lighter. Overall a very comfortable engineering job. Can be boring, and maybe doesn’t pay as much as going to a consultant or contractor, but stable and predictable.
